Preliminary Solo Dance Test

Congratulations to Sophie Stannard who passed her Preliminary Solo Dance Test at Herne Bay High School on Sunday 31 January. She really skated well, although going first also made her slightly more nervous. Both judges complimented her on how nicely she had skated and what a lovely test it had been. Her dances were the Swing Foxtrot, Rhythm Blues and Canasta Tango.

Thanks go to those who came down to support her today. It was lovely to see that her hard work has been rewarded. Sophie has now qualified and will now be training hard for her Espoir Solo Dance Championships on the 27/28 March 2010 at the Bushfield Leisure Centre, Peterborough.

Maidstone Open Competition

Maidstone Roller Dance Club held its annual Open Competitions at Mote Park in Maidstone, Kent on the 13th and 14th September 2008. There were lots of events that we were able to enter over the two days - Solo Dance, Solo Team Dance, Exhibitions, OSP's (Original Set Pattern - A dance that is created by the skaters to music of their choice). Our team was made up from skaters who had never entered a competition before to experienced senior skaters. The team was Connor, Sophie, Charlie, Krystyna, Bethany, Laura and Debbie. The ages of our skaters also varied from nine years old to over 40 years old.

The team took part in the Solo Dance Events, with Connor taking part in his first competition. Connor skated confidently and was put through to the Semi Final in his event; a great achievement for his first competition. When asked how much out of 10 had he enjoyed going out on the floor and competing, Connor's reply was "10". A really great effort.

Charlie and Sophie competed in the Non Medallists Solo Dance Event and both skated really well. Although Charlie was knocked out after the first round she skated with strength and confidence. Sophie managed to get through to the second round, skating a good Tango. Well done to both.

All three novice skaters entered the Non Medallist Solo Dance Team Event and were called the HBU Rugrats. Each skater is required to skate one dance each and the combined marks are then used to place the teams. Our team was placed 9th, a good result against some more experienced skaters.

Krystyna and Bethany entered the Prelim Solo Dance Event which they both skated very well. Bethany and Krystyna have a friendly rivalry as cousins and it was Bethany's turn to pip Krystyna in the results. Both girls danced well, Bethany was placed 13th and Krystyna 14th.

Laura competed in the Inter Silver and above Solo Dance Event and was placed 1st, a really great skate from Laura. We had not expected Laura to do so well and she ended up with one skate on and one skate off at the presentation. It was quite a shock when her name was called out in 1st place as she had to rush to get her skates on and she only managed to get there once the skater in 2nd had been presented with their medal. A big well done to Laura, a good reward for all the hard work.

Debbie entered the Adult Solo Dance Event and her skating improved throughout the competition. We had hoped that Debbie would be in placed in the top half of the competition, but to be placed 3rd was fantastic. A really good confidence boost to Debbie.

Laura also competed in the OSP event, which can be quite subjective as all the skaters are able to choose their own music. The judges are then given the hard task of marking the various dances against each other which is really difficult marking a Tango against a lively Samba. With this in mind Laura skated to "Candy Man" by Christina Aguilera and skated really well. Laura was up against some really good performers and was placed in 5th. A really good effort with some more work to be done on the performance as Laura has proved she is an excellent technical skater. Keep up the hard work - it'll be worth it!!

Our novice and intermediate skaters who are a group of five enthusiastic youngsters decided that they wanted to have a go at Exhibition skating - something that they had not tried before. They all decided that they wanted to do a Solo, and then a Group Show Number.

In the 10 years and under event Connor dressed up as James Bond and skated to the theme tune to James Bond and then to the Scouting for Girls track - "I wish I was James Bond". Connor skated a fantastic program adding in props and performed brilliantly in his first ever competition. (Placed 14th) Sophie dressed up in a black top and brightly coloured skirt with a neckerchief and skated to Hairspray. Sophie's program was energetic and lively and recreated the feeling in the movie that made everyone want to get up from their chairs and dance and clap along with her during her performance. (Placed 13th) Charlie dressed up and looked really cool in her shorts and T shirt and neckerchief when she skated to Shania Twain's track - "That don't impress me much". Charlie really enjoyed acting out the song and loved being able to do spins and trick steps. Although her routine was the same length as everyone else, hers seemed to fly by. (Placed 15th)

The 11 years and over event saw Krystyna dressed up as a "Posh" Bumble Bee. Krystyna decided that she wanted to combine a novelty program and some strong exhibition skating together. She skated to Arthur Askey's track "Busy Bee" along with "Don't Stop me now" by Queen and the "Can-can" a traditionally energetic dance. Krystyna certainly won the hearts of the audience in her lovely costume and entertained everyone with her performance. (Placed 13th) Bethany dressed up in a lovely bright orange and gold dress and skated to "Mamma Mia" from the recent hit show with the same name along with "Money, Money, Money" by Abba. Bethany put a lot of feeling and interpretation into her program which got the audience singing along. A beautifully skated program with lots of trick steps, jumps and spins. (Placed 14th)

Their Group exhibition number was to "St Trinians". They all made a fantastic effort to get their costumes just right. The girls dressed up in grey skirts, white school shirts, striped grey ties and straw boaters and wild hair. Connor was dressed in black trousers, a groovy leopard print shirt, bling and a black trilby. All five skaters had to work hard to learn new moves and all had to let go of any inhibitions they may have had and just had to "Go for it". They all did extremely well showing that it was still possible to have fun whilst having to perform some quite difficult moves. Connor, Charlie and Sophie teamed up during the routine to perform steps and make a small group, whilst Krystyna and Bethany performed more complex skating. The overall effect that these five young skaters achieved was fantastic. They have received so many compliments and have been able to grow during their experience. (Placed 6th)

Thanks to all the parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters who supported the team with such enthusiasm throughout the weekend. It is always so lovely to see them having such a good time and enjoying themselves. We look forward to our younger skaters joining the "St Trinians" Group Exhibition number to make it a group of youngsters with attitude, ready to rule the floor.

Well done to all the team.

British Championships

British Championships 2008Several of our skaters have recently taken part in this year's British Championships.

The Espoir Championships took place in Beaumont Leys in Leicester. Krystyna Wale was our only skater and she came 4th out of 21 skaters, narrowly missing 3rd place which would have automatically put her in the squad to go to the Cup of Europe in Italy. However, she is a reserve should anyone drop out.

The Cadet Championships took place at Mote Park, Maidstone. Bethany Wale was our only skater in this class. Again there were 21 skaters competing and Bethany came 11th. This was her first attempt at the Cadet class and she skated extremely well

The Classic Competition also took place at Mote Park and we had one skater entered - Debbie Foreman. She excelled herself and came 2nd.

The Junior and Senior championships take place at Haywards Heath in July. Laura Minter and Debbie Foreman will be competing so good luck to both of you.
