Herne Bay United traveled to Manchester at the weekend for the National Senior Cup Finals with the hope of completing the treble of English competitions.
The game started well and HBU pushed Grimsby from the start which resulted in an early back hand shot from Simon Hosking finding the net. United failed to continue to capitalize on a number of opportunities but still maintained the majority of possession not allowing Grimsby to play.
Grimsby started with a weaker side hoping that a short on numbers United squad would tire, so they injected their two strongest attackers in the hope of challenging in the latter stages of the half. When the changes were made there was little impact on their behalf as United furthered their tally to three with goals from Matt Barton and Brendan Barker leaving it 3-0 at half time.
The second half started much the same, United scored an early goal through Hosking keeping the tempo high. Grimsby were awarded a goal by the referee when it was unclear whether the ball crossed the line before Daniel Barton made the save.
United continued to push Grimsby until the score was 6-1 with a second goal from Matt Barton and Hosking completing his hat-trick. United then relaxed and began to give Grimsby room to play resulting in three goals bringing the score to 6-4. United responded once they had re-settled and scored two further goals by Brendan making him the second player in United to have completed a hat-trick. Final Score HBU 8 Grimsby 4
Captain Simon Hosking said "We ground out the result today after traveling 6 hours due to traffic, with one player falling ill before the game and on a rink a lot smaller than standard size, but the players adapted and stepped up to the challenge which has enabled the club to complete the Treble, winning all three senior competitions available this season and I am very proud of the players' commitment this season.
Team: Dan Barton (GK), David Garlick (GK), Brendan Barker (3), Simon Hosking capt (3), Neil Austin, Dendy Hudson, Karl Smith, Matt Barton (2)

HBU traveled to Manchester on Saturday to participate in the Juniors Under 20’s National Cup Finals. They had gained a place in the Finals by having to defeat a very challenging opponent in the Cup Qualifiers. Their opponents in the Final, Middlesbrough, had gained entry via a bye. Although with only seven outplayers and one goal keeper we had an excellent group of talented players forming the team.
The Captain, Charlie Pughe, talked with the players before the start of the match to ensure that they gave 100% energy from the first whistle. The first half was a very fast moving exciting affair with HBU completely dominating the play, the first goal scored after 7 minutes by Joe King, the second goal coming from James Hoare with 31 seconds left on the clock, this meant HBU went into the second half 2-0 ahead. The opposing team, as anticipated, came out in the second half with great determination. Possibly due to the five hour journey to reach the venue, the HBU players appeared to tire and began making mistakes and as a consequence conceded a goal after three minutes, but again regained the initiative with a goal from Myles Tichband after 8 minutes. HBU then conceded two further goals through defensive mistakes which put them at a 3 –3 draw at Full Time. The Officials agreed that 5 minutes each way extra time would be played but subject to the ‘Golden Goal’ rule. Unfortunately for HBU the opposition scored the winning goal after 3 minutes play due to a defensive error. Although HBU were obviously disappointed with the result, they had played exceptionally well and were unlucky on the day. The Captain Charlie Pughe said that he was proud of all his players with the commitment and skill that they had employed and with the sportsman like way in which they had played the game and how they accepted the defeat.
Team: Robert Carnell, Joel de Figuieredo, Tom Hawkins, James Hoare, Joe King, Charlie Pughe (Cpt), Myles Tichband, Jamie Williamson (GK)

The HBU Under 11 Viper's team traveled to Manchester on Saturday 14 July to play in the National Cup Final against a team from Ely. United were a strong side and the first goal was scored by Harry Rowbotham within 2 minutes. Controlled passing enabled subsequent goals by Alex Mount, Ashley Barton and Lewis Greenwood, and the HBU players dominated much of the first half. Other team members Michael Gregory, Josie Greenwood and Tom Barton contributed well to the team providing additional support and defensively played extremely well. Eddie Mount made same great saves and only 2 goals eluded him. The game ended with a late penalty taken by Ashley Barton in the top right had corner and the final score line was United winning 11 goals to Ely 2. Player of the Year was also awarded to Alex Mount during the presentation.
This capped a fantastic season for the HBU Under 11 Viper's team as they were also winners of the Eastern Counties League this season and were undefeated in all of their 16 games. Furthermore four members of the team have just returned from an England Under 11's trip to Portugal and again were undefeated in all matches. Coach Jon Barton has commented how proud he is of this young group of hockey players who show great potential for the future of England roller hockey.

Herne Bay United CSL faced Grimsby in their last match of the season on Saturday. It was always going to be a difficult game, as United travelled with only one substitute, due to players' work commitments, as well as two of the players being banned due to the red cards they received in the last fixture.
Although severely weakened, it was United who started the stronger, and after only 50 seconds Arran Bowyer was fouled in the penalty area. He got up and coolly scored the resulting penalty, to make it 0-1 to United.
The game settled down after that, and both teams created chances, although neither side could find a way past the keepers. Grimsby kept attacking and they got their reward when they equalised through Will Dring with ten minutes gone. United lost their composure and 30 seconds later Nic Johnson made it 2-1 to the home side. United regrouped, and started to put some passes together, as their team game improved the chances began to come, and with 18 minutes gone United's Arran Bowyer beat 3 players and went round the keeper to score. It was now 2-2. A minute later United's Joe King was fouled in the penalty area, this time player manager Phil McVey stepped up to take the resulting penalty. He missed, but scored from the rebound to make it 2-3. United were looking like they would take a one goal lead into half-time, but with only 15 seconds remaining in the half, Grimsby levelled the score through Andy Simms. The half ended 3-3.
The second half saw Grimsby change their tactics in defence, they pressed United all over the rink, so as to tire them out, knowing they could not make changes. This did not stop United and after 7 minutes Phil McVey found James Hoare, who sprinted half the length of the rink before finishing well past the Grimsby keeper to make it 3-4. United continued to have the best of the play, and 4 minutes later Phil McVey went on a run which saw him beat 3 players before flicking the ball into the top corner of the net to make it 3-5.
Grimsby kept attacking United, and 4 minutes later Grimsby's Marc Waddingham scored a fine effort to make it 4-5. United were creating chances of their own, and should have pulled further ahead when they were awarded thier 3rd penalty of the game. McVey took it but the keeper saved to keep Grimsby in the game.
Grimsby were struggling to break through United's defence, but as the half went on the United players began to suffer from fatigue. Eventually with only 5 minutes left Simms scored for Grimsby to make it 5-5. The goal gave the home side a lift, and 3 minutes later Will Dring made it 6-5. There was now only 2 minutes left, United did not give in, with a minute left on the clock, McVey beat his marker sprinted the length of the rink before finishing with a low slapshot that went in off the bottom of the keeper's far post to tie the game at 6-6.
Not to be out done it was Grimsby's Waddingham who scored the winner after a scramble in the United penalty area with only 15 seconds remaining to make it 7-6 to Grimsby.
After the game United's Player Manager Phil McVey said: "I'm pleased with the team's effort today, especially Arran Bowyer. It was always going to be difficult, but with only 1 sub we were always facing an uphill struggle. The lads didn't stop working and a draw was probably a fair result. Having said that, I do not like losing under any circumstances so it makes me even more determined to take the team performances up a level next year. We have improved though, last year we were 5th out of 7, this year we were 4th. Next year I'm looking for a huge improvement. I want both HBU teams to be 1st and 2nd, I don't care in which order."
Team : Garrett Priestley (GK), Phil McVey (3), Paul McVey, Arran Bowyer (2), Joe King, James Hoare (1).

HBU vs Norwich
The Vipers took a slightly smaller team to Wymondham; Eddie in goal and just four outfield players Harry Rowbotham, Alex Mount , Lewis & Josie Greenwood. The first match of the day was against Norwich, which was a slightly frustrating game with the Norwich players defending heavily in front of their goal, however Harry opened the scoring mid-way through the first half, with more goals following slowly; Eddie was only tested once in goal, towards the end of the match. Final score HBU 6 - 0 Norwich.
HBU vs Kings Lynn
The second match against Kings Lynn, although a friendly was going to be the toughest match of the day. Kings Lynn, quickly took charge of the game, and scored two early goals leaving the Vipers trailing, however shortly before half time Alex scored, pulling one back. The second half started with Kings Lynn still leading but Alex took the ball from the centre spot and scored, levelling the scoreline. Josie worked hard in mid field, tackling hard against much larger opponents ensuring HBU kept possession for most of the half . Alex then dribbled the ball into the corner, passed it in the goal mouth for Lewis, who smacked it in the back of the net, giving the Vipers the lead; Alex and Lewis scored another goal each. While Harry and Eddie worked hard in defence and made great saves, to deny Kings Lynn from scoring again. Final score HBU 5 - 2 Kings Lynn.
HBU vs Cambridge
HBU were the stronger of the two teams but were beginning to tire after playing the tournament without any substitutions. The team passed the ball around and Josie tried hard to score but was denied by the keeper on several occasions. However, the boys were able to score, Alex 6, Harry 6, Lewis 1; final score HBU 13 - 0 Cambridge.

The programme for the weekend was built around the National Team's preparations for the World Championships in June. The plan was that the Angolan National Team would spend the weekend in Herne Bay en-route to Portugal where they would complete their final preparations. Matches would be organized with England/Angola/Herne Bay United. Midweek we were informed that the necessary Visas to enter the UK would be delayed and they would not be able to come! The coach of the England Team is Portuguese so he called in some favours and managed to find a replacement team. They were Riba de Avre from the Barcelos area of northern Portugal.
Saturday evening opened with a match between England and Riba de Avre. Fast and efficient they proved a good test for the National team. James Taylor, who plays professionally in Italy and was back with the team for the 1st time, was the only English player to get on the score sheet, once in each half. The Portuguese captain opened the scoring after just 3 minutes and set the scene. Half time showed them 2 - 1 up. England managed to maintain the pace and in the 2nd half only conceded 1 whilst only scoring 1. Final Score was 3 - 2 to the visitors. 4 HBU players, Dan Barton, Brendan Barker, Karl Smith (Neil Austin absent due to work) are in the England Team.
The 2nd match of the night was England v Herne Bay United. The newly crowned champions had 4 players from the winning team of last weekend playing for England so players from HBU CSL were called to make up the numbers. The half-time score was 3 - 2 to the National side. The 2nd half was busier as the main 4 were allowed recovery time and the younger team members proved their selection. The final result was 9 - 7 to the Nat team.
Sunday morning began at 9.00am with a National Knockout Cup semi-final match for HBU. The home side were minus 3 key players because they were shift workers and not available. Halifax are a National Div 1 team who have just gained promotion into the Premier League for next season. They struggled with the pace and the longer match time but played with determination. The half-time score was 5 - 2 and the final result was 11 - 3 to HBU
Team: D. Barton, P Nelson (GKs) N.Espejo, M.Barton (2), N.Barton, S.Hosking(6)capt, Paul McVey, B.Barker(2) + 1 OG
The second match of the day was HBU v Riba de Avre. HBU with more or less their usual line-up allowed the visitors to go 2 goals ahead before they managed to make their mark followed by the equalizer from goals by Simon Hosking and Brendan Barker. A further goal from both sides took the half-time tally to 3-3.
The Portuguese found HBU up to the challenge and even though the visitors added 2 in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half as HBU, showing signs of tiredness from the earlier Cup match, did equalize with goals from Neil Austin and Paul McVey.
Once again the Portuguese took the lead but HBU never give up and with just 30 seconds on the clock Brendan Barker made the score level at 6 - 6. That was how it finished.
Team: D.Barton, P.Nelson ((GKs), N.Espejo (1), M. Barton, N. Barton, N.Austin(1), Simon.Hosking(1)capt, P.McVey (1), M.Tichband, B.Barker (2).
The England Manager said it had proved a very useful weekend and the coach was pleased that he had almost all his team selection present and that the new younger players being introduced to the team acquitted themselves well showing great improvement.
HBU having secured the National Champions Title last weekend were now safely through to the National Cup Finals to be held in Manchester in July. At times their players were severely tested over the weekend on England and Club duty but they proved they are the best in the UK because they have players in depth to fulfill such commitments and achieve success.

HBU CSL, having faced Grimsby the night before, had a tough game against an improving Middlesborough side.
United picked up where they had left off the night before, with only 5 minutes gone, veteran Paul McVey scored to make it 1-0 to United. Player Manager Phil McVey had changed the defensive tactics and was playing a zonal defence. Middlesborough struggled to break this down, and although they had 90% of the possession United were holding firm. Then with 9 minutes remaining, the visitors equalised through capt John Jones. United lost concentration, and it cost them as Middlesborough made it 1-2 30 seconds later.
United went straight back at Middlesborough, some excellent play and some class fininshing saw United capt Joe Fidock score a hat-trick in 3 minutes to make it 4-1 with 2 minutes to go to half time. Middlesborough are a determined side, and they immediately hit back with 2 goals before the break to make the half-time score 4-4.
The second half saw Middlesborough step up the pace, and unfortunately the United players, having played the previous evening were beginning to tire. Middlesborough scored 3 goals in the first 10 minutes to make it 4-7. United threw everything they could at the visitors, and created chance after chance, which were squandered. As United pushed for goals, some ill-discipline crept into some of the players, and captain Joe Fidock was red-carded for abusing the referee. Myles Titchband, the youngest player on the rink did manage to pull one back for United with a minute to go, but it was too little too late for the home side, and Middlesborough ran out worthy winners 5-7. Unfortunately, there was more ill-discipline from a United player as Charlie Pughe was also shown a red-card for abusing the referee after the final whistle.
After the game captain Joe Fidock said: "I'm disappointed with the result, the lads gave their all, but it wasn't good enough. I apologise to the club and the fans for my actions today. I have no complaints with the red-card."
Player Manager Phil Mcvey added: "I thought we should have beaten Grimsby last night, we played better today, but we came up against a very good Middlesborough, and they deserved the victory. I am very disappointed with the 2 red-cards today. Joe has already apologised to me, he knows he has let himself and the club down. I'm sure the referee will be putting in a report. We only have one game left this season, so we will have to play that one without them. I'm sure the club will be looking into the player's actions and we will have to see what happens. It was unacceptable behaviour, and on behalf of the club, I would like to apologise to the fans, the referees and to Middlesborough. On a positive note, I thought the player of the weekend for us was young Myles Titchband. It was his debut this weekend, and he was our best player in both games. If he applies himself properly when training, he will have a big future in this sport."

HBU CSL faced Grimsby on Saturday night, the game was very closely contested. Although both teams had plenty of possession, the first half saw the defences on top. Neither side could break through, Grimsby started the stronger and with 9 minutes remaining in the first half, their young striker Nic Johnson finished off a well worked move to make it 0-1. The goal seemed to stir United into life, and it was Grimsby who were having to defend. United created a flurry of chances before Joe King scored the equaliser with 4 minutes left on the clock, with a powerful back-hand giving the Grimsby keeper no chance.
The game had suddenly come alive and both teams began to move the ball well. With 1 minute remaining in the first half Grimsby went 1-2 ahead through Josh Dring. United hit back immediately, Steve Clarke making the game level at 2-2 with 18 seconds left. Grimsby launched a final attack, and somehow managed to score with 6 seconds left to make it 2-3 at half-time.
United CSL knew if they stepped up the pressure on Grimsby they could get the win. Within a minute from the restart Paul McVey beat 2 players before hitting a drive into the top corner of the net to tie the game at 3-3.
The pressure seemed to be getting to both teams as the game began to get very physical. Over the next 15 minutes there were no goals, but plenty of cards, United players Arran Bowyer, Steve Clarke and James Hoare, and Grimsby's Will Dring and Nic Johnson all being sin binned by the referees.
With 7 minutes remaining Grimsby pulled ahead when Nic Johnson came out of the sin bin to score and make it 3-4. United had to focus on playing hockey not getting drawn into a physical battle. Their concentration paid off, as with 4 minutes remaining Steve Clark made it 4-4. United now believed they had the momentum, and they pressed for the winner. Although they created countless chances, the players could not find the back of the net. Having over commited in attack, United were left short in defence. With 2 minutes remaining on the clock Grimsby's Steve Hancocks made it 4-5. It looked as if United were going to end up with nothing from the game. Then with less than a minute left in the match, Myles Titchband, making his debut for United received a pass from Player manager Phil Mcvey, looked up, picked his spot, and coolly slotted the ball past a helpless keeper to tie the game at 5-5.

Herne Bay United played host to their closest rivals in the NRHA Premier League at the weekend, with the League and Nat Title depending on the result of the game with either team having the chance of taking it.
It was a crowded house at the Pier Pavilion full of anticipation of a classic, however the game start was delayed with controversy as Bury tried to agree the registration of a player on the day of the game. Bury had flown in from Spain, Matt Conroy who is currently playing in Spain. The Officials had to seek direction from the World Governing committee(CIRH)) minutes before the game. Following that statement Bury and the president Keith Allen of the NRHA were forced to acknowledge the rule that it was not permitted for a player to play under 2 Federations in 1 season.
The Game started understandably nervously for Herne Bay United as they had a lot to lose on this game with a draw or a win securing the title for a record 13th time. All the players had felt that they had already won the League. They were amazed two weeks previously to find out that although they were undefeated and their rivals had lost a game and the first game between the two teams had ended in a draw meaning Bury could only finish level on points even if they beat HBU at the Pier, the superior goal difference of HBU would secure the title but this was not the case. A rule had been put in that it would go on the result of the two games between the two teams much the same as in a Cup or tournament. So with Bury having nothing to lose and Herne Bay United with everything to lose a high tension game was always going to pursue.
Bury started strong, playing good organised hockey with good team play against a nervous and disjointed HBU, and after twelve minutes Bury's persistence was rewarded by Darren Willis scoring from a tight angle. Our goal keeper, Dan Barton was doing all he could at this point to keep United in the fight. HBU were feeling the pressure and trying to get their game together with the manager Phil McVey making the necessary substitutions to try and find the right formula. After some strict words of advice and re-injecting players the play started to come together with 40 seconds left of the first half Herne Bay United began to show why they have won the title twelve times with a passing move Barker found 'in space' Simon Hosking who quickly finished in the far bottom corner. Herne Bay United felt the game swaying to them and quickly took the opportunity with Hosking setting Neil Austin up on the far post to net clinically with 7 seconds remaining of the first half. Herne Bay United went into the interval 2-1 up.
HBU returned to the floor after a strong half time talk from Manager Phil McVey and responded with a quick goal from Chris Espejo 26 seconds from the start to make it 3-1, Bury responded through captain Darrell Pearce 3 minutes later. Both teams had good support but with the louder and majority crowd spurring United on to score 4 more goals two from Barker and two from Austin. Phil McVey called a time out feeling the time to take the opportunity to remind the players though the score was 7-2 they had not won it yet as there was 14 minutes left to play.
However his fears came to fruition as a fighting Bury came back with the majority of play and a fumbling HBU bringing the game back to 7-6 with 1 min 51 seconds left. Phil took the risk of making a late substitution putting Barker for Hudson and he was repaid with a good team goal with Hosking passing to an unmarked Barker to just direct the ball into the back of the net to put the game hopefully out of reach with 1:11 on the clock. A now desperate Bury captain, Darrell Pearce, made a tackle that would have been red carded in a Premiere League Football match. It was a trade mark two footed tackle into Karl Smith who understandably retaliated in anger and was sent off along with the perpetrator plus team-mate and captain Simon Hosking who had joined in.
When the final whistle blew Herne Bay United celebrated their 13th title in 15 years lifting the Trophy up to the supporters that spurred them on to a historic victory. Manager Phil McVey was ecstatic with the victory but was seriously aggrieved with the tackle on an in-form Karl Smith saying "he's lucky not to have broken his legs". However he was overjoyed and said "though Bury were prepared to do all they could to beat Herne Bay United by what ever means necessary just makes the victory for us and our supporters even sweeter. I would also like to thank all the players who have played this season and helped us to this historic day".
Captain Simon Hosking added to the manager's views but went on to say "It goes to show how crowd support can spur you on and we may not have won the league today without them. We are very grateful and hope to see them throughout the European League matches next season when a number of top flight European teams will come to Herne Bay to play the group stages as they did in 1999!"
The Herne Bay United team would like to thank their Sponsors for helping them achieve the record Thirteenth National Champions title - Crown Imperial, ID Hairdressing and Beartone Guitars.

The result was HBU 8 Bury 6. But that is not the whole story.
HBU entered the match 3 points ahead plus a goal difference of 44 to Bury's 29. As far as HBU was concerned the Title was already theirs but Bury argued that the title should be decided on the final match result according to our rules. The NRHA Competition Rules rewritten at the end of last season did not cover this point specifically deferring to CIRH Rules. These cover European and World Championship events which are run as Tournaments albeit lasting a week. Leagues in EVERY sport measure team performance over a whole season and declare winners on POINTS then GOAL DIFFERENCE and if still level then the RESULT BETWEEN the 2 Teams.
The NRHA decided in favour of the wording or the lack of it in our Competition Rules agreeing with what the CIRH format for declaring a winner - POINTS, MATCH RESULT & then goal difference if still equal. The Premier League has in its recent history, 3 times, ended with 2 teams equal on points and on each occasion the title has been awarded to the team with the best goal difference.
This was difficult for HBU to accept but that was the situation and they were not expecting any further problem other than they had to win or draw to claim the crown.
In the week running up to the match there was, unbeknown to them, the request by Bury to register a player who had been licensed to play in Spain this season. To some this was OK if he had a release from his Spanish Club and their Federation but to others it was against the CIRH Rule that players are restricted to 1 Federation in any 1 Season. Finding the documentation, rules covering either situation proved difficult and was in fact not finalized until 10 minutes after the match should have started. The matter was eventually settled with a telephone call to the CIRH President who confirmed that the Rule - Art 23 - said 'no player can play under more than 1 Federation in any 1 season'.

Herne Bay United Under 11´s Adders travelled to Burwell on Sunday for their last tournament in this season´s Eastern Counties league.
Despite being a player short, which meant only having one substitute, the team started well with a win against Cambridge. Although their opponents took an early lead the Adders pressed the Cambridge defence throughout the first half and ended it 3-2 up through two Michael Gregory goals and one from Connor Botting. The Adders started strongly in the second half with Michael Gregory claming his hat-trick straight from the whistle. He scored a fourth and Sam Whiffen added another before Cambridge managed to get back in the game scoring two more of their own as well as the Adders conceding an own goal. An exciting game, it ended Cambridge 5 6 HBU Adders.
Their second game against Norwich proved to be the best of the season with the Adders having the majority of possession. A first half hat-trick from Michael Gregory plus one from Charlie Botting, with little reply from the opposition, meant the Adders went into the break 4 1 up. The second half was played in a similar fashion with all the Adders displaying excellent passing and positioning. Goals from Sam Whiffen and Charley Bassom and another Michael Gregory hat-trick ensured the Adders ran out worthy 9 2 winners.
The lack of substitutes was beginning to tell by the third game against Cottenham as the Adders were visibly tiring. The match was played end to end with both teams defending well. Cottenham were the first to score but Michael Gregory equalised before Cottenham made the most of their chances to lead at the end of the first half 4 1. The second half continued with end to end play, Connor Botting and Michael Gregory each scoring to narrow Cottenham´s lead. The opposition scored again before Michael Gregory netted his last of the day but it was not enough, HBU Adders narrowly losing 4 - 5.
The results keep the Adders in 4th place in the league although other matches still to be played could affect their final position.

Herne Bay United put together one of their best performances of the season in a 14-3 demolition of local neighbours Herne United at the Pier Pavilion on Saturday night.
Herne Bay United started the game with a strong line-up and were determined not to let the opposition settle by taking the game to them from the first whistle. It took less than five minutes to open the scoring when Karl Smith was able to slot home at the far post following some good work from Simon Hosking. The first goal breathed extra confidence into the reigning champions and five minutes later the score was 5-0 with all of the starting line-up getting themselves onto the scoresheet. There were two goals for Brendan Barker and one each for Neil Austin and Simon Hosking. The latter, who was having an excellent game, having already created three of the first four goals before netting himself.
With Herne Bay United firmly in control of the game it was a chance to introduce some fresh legs. The team continued to enjoy the majority of possession and looked very comfortable but were unable to turn this continued dominance into further goals. Brendan Barker was reintroduced with four minutes of the first half remaining and he completed his hattrick 4 seconds before halftime with a long range drive that flew past the goalkeeper before he could react.
The 6-0 half-time lead was not flattering and the emphasis on the second half was to keep the tempo high and not to let the team's focus drop. Although the second half still saw Herne Bay United having the majority of the ball it took nine minutes to extend the lead when Dendy Hudson was on hand to put the finishing touches to a flowing passing move.
As the half wore on coach Philip McVey began to reintroduce the starting line-up in a bid to up the goalscoring. This paid dividends almost immediately as Karl Smith was able to complete his hat-trick with two goals in as many minutes. Herne Bay United did not let up and continued to apply immense pressure on the Herne United goal.
The goals began to flow regularly with Barker notching his fourth of the evening and Neil Austin adding a further three including a rocket of a slap shot that nearly burst the net. Herne United even got in on the act notching three consolation goals but in truth they were never involved in this one-sided contest.
With two minutes to go Simon Hosking capped a man of the match display with his second goal from close range which he was able to add to the numerous assists he had already laid on to his grateful teammates. The final score of 14-3 did not flatter anybody and it was a thoroughly efficient performance put on by the reigning Champions.
Speaking after the game Captain Hosking said, "We are very pleased with the level of performance that all 10 players in the team put in today and if we can carry it through to our last game on May 12th against Bury St Edmunds then I have no doubts that we will be able to retain the League Title."

Herne Bay United CSL were knocked out of the National Cup at Grimsby on Saturday. It was always going to be a tough fixture but due to players work commitments HBU travelled with a severely weakened side.
It was Grimsby who started the game the stronger, and they had possession for the opening 10 minutes, but were unable to create any chances against a strong United defence. The deadlock was broken with 12 minutes remaining when Grimsby's Mark Waddingham scored from a extremely tight angle past veteran keeper Garrett Priestley. The goal kick started United into life, and they began to create chances of their own; Robert Carnell, Joe King and Joe Fidock all coming close, but unfortunately none of the chances were taken. Although United were now having the better of it, it was Grimsby who scored, catching United on the break to go 2-0 up with 6 minutes remaining. Almost immediately from the restart United were caught out at the back and Grimsby capitalised through Waddingham to make it 3-0. United did not panic, and continued to attack finally pulling one back through Charlie Pughe, who finished coolly after being put through by player coach Phil McVey with a minute left on the clock. (3-1).
Grimsby picked up the pace at the beginning of the second half, and 2 goals inside the first 3 minutes saw them extend their lead to 5-1. Grimsby sensed victory and began to press a tiring United side all over the rink. The tactic reaped its reward as they scored 3 more in quick succession without reply. (8-1).
With 10 minutes remaining McVey called a time out to talk to the players and to give them a chance to rest. It appeared to work as straight from the restart captain Joe Fidock scored with a long range effort past an unsighted Grimsby keeper. (8-2). 20 seconds later Fidock scored again after some neat passing to make it 8-3. Boosted by this United pressed for more. With 7 minutes remaining McVey received a pass from Robert Carnell turned and shot, the ball flew in off the post to make it 8-4. United were now in the ascendancy and shots were flying in on the Grimsby net from all angles. Fidock made it 8-5 when his slap shot from the halfway line went in off the underside of the crossbar with 4 minutes remaining.
United were running out of time, and as they pushed for more goals, they left gaps all over the defence, and unfortunately were too tired to plug them, Grimsby scored 4 goals to put the game beyond them. At the final whistle, Grimsby had run out worthy winners 12-5.
After the game HBU captain Joe Fidock said: "We're gutted, we knew it was going to be tough, and we tried to pull it back, in the end we just ran out of steam."
United player coach Phil McVey added: "Unfortunately we were missing half the team, Grimsby are a good side and credit them, they kept the pace of the game high throughout, knowing we had no subs, eventually we would tire, all of us were out on our feet at the end. I'm pleased with the lads who played, they gave their all, but I'm still disappointed with the result. I would like to wish Grimsby luck against Bury in the semi-final."

Herne Bay United had the opportunity to seal the league title on Saturday evening when they met second placed Bury St Edmunds in Soham. However, this was not to be the case as they could only manage a draw, leaving the title race still open.
The match started well for the Champions elect with Brendan Barker putting them ahead after just two and a half minutes with a trademark finish at the far post after taking the ball around the back of the goal. Things got even better for the away side as Captain Simon Hosking doubled the lead with ten minutes gone, finishing well after beating his man.
This should have been the signal for Herne Bay United to take firm control of the game and begin to frustrate Bury with good ball movement and some solid defending. However, this was not to be. Within a minute Bury pulled a goal back from the penalty spot following a sloppy tackle in the area. Thirty seconds later the game was all square as Joe Wheatley's deflected shot found its way past Dan Barton. United were shell shocked and in the next three minutes Bury had scored two more goals through Wheatley and their Captain, Darrell Pearce.
With United in disarray Bury were intent on adding more goals to put the result beyond doubt. Herne Bay United then began to show the fighting spirit that has won them numerous titles over the last fifteen years. They battled back into the game and two more goals by Barker ensured that the scores were level going into half time.
The half time team talks consisted of both sides putting emphasis on their defense and this translated into a cagey opening with neither side wanting to be the first to concede. It took a disputed goal after ten minutes from Sam Jackson, playing his first game of the season following a neck injury, to split the sides. United just couldn't shake off the determined Bury side and with nine minutes remaining they drew levelagain through Darrell Pearce. United only had to wait fifteen seconds to restore their lead as the best goal of the game was finished by Jackson following a slick passing move with Simon Hosking.
Herne Bay United then began to close the game down and were appearing to do this successfully by allowing Bury only long shots which were easily repelled. However, with three minutes to go Bury were awarded a dubious penalty when Neil Austin was adjudged to have kicked the ball in the penalty area. More drama was to follow as Dan Barton managed to save Carlos Amaral's penalty but he was able to net the rebound bringing the score to 6-6. The last three minutes were extremely frenetic with both sides pushing for the win but no-one could find the killer goal and the scores ended up level. This result maintains Herne Bay United's three point cushion at the top of the table and means the league could yet be decided on the final day of the season when the two sides meet again.
Speaking after the game Captain Hosking said, "Although we're very disappointed not to have won today the title is still in our hands and I am confident that we have a team that will pull together and seal the Championship."

HBU V EC Select (Friendly)
EC Select had guested a few additional players in an attempt to make it a harder game for United, however this did not deter the team and goals soon appeared via Ashley (2), Lewis (1) and Harry (2). Josie was playing in her first group of matches for the team and was a welcome addition. The second half saw further goals from Alex (5) and Ash (1) which made for yet again an impressive score line with the final whistle blown at United 11, EC Select 0.
HBU V Kings Lynn
This was a very important game for United, as King Lynn are currently in second place behind us in the league and we are the only team they have lost to. HBU were ready for the whistle and within a minute of the start of play the first goal had been scored by Ashley, and further goals soon followed from Alex and Lewis. Ahead at half time United knew they had to play in the same way so as not to give the game away. Much to the team's delight goals again re-appeared from Ashley, Alex and Harry and the team gave Kings Lynn hardly any opportunity to score, although one did manage to evade them. A great penalty shot from Alex contributed to the final score United 7 Kings Lynn 1.
HBU V Ely
United had total dominance of the game throughout which is reflected in the score line: Alex (3), Ash (7), Harry (1) and Lewis (3). Final score HBU 14 - Ely 0

Herne Bay United took a step closer to retaining the National Premier League title, with a close victory over a tough Middlesbrough side at the Pier on Sunday.
Although Middlesbrough had all the possession at the start of the game, they could not penetrate United's defence, and it was the home side that took the lead, Chris Espejo scored with a close range effort with only 4 minutes gone. United looked much the better side, and a big win looked likely.
Middlesbrough did equalise two minutes later through their captain John Jones, but it was against the run of play, and United's team game was improving all the time.
United continued to dominate possession, and created chance after chance, which they failed to convert. Then with 13 minutes left in the half, Brendan Barker won possession on the half way line, sprinted to the goal and coolly finished to make it 2-1. Middlesbrough were struggling with United's superior team game, but they still believed they had a chance as United were not scoring.
With 4 minutes remaining United's Neil Austin, burst through to stick the ball into the top corner of the net to make it 3-1. Barker completed the scoring with the best goal of the half with only 20 seconds remaining to make the half time score 4-1.
United started the second half strongly and went 5-1 within 2 minutes, captain Simon Hosking finishing off a good team move. Middlesbrough looked down and out, but as United eased off, captain John Jones scored his 2nd of the game to make it 5-2. As the half went on Middlesbrough started to create some chances, United's keeper Paul Nelson had to pull off a string of fine saves including a penalty. With 10 minutes remaining Middlesbrough scored again to make it 5-3.
United were still creating more chances than their opponents, but were not putting the ball in the back of the net. This nearly cost them as with 6 minutes remaining Peter Lonsdale scored again for Middlesbrough to make it 5-4.
Although Middlesbrough pressed for an equaliser, United showed their experience as they kept the ball, running the clock down. At the final whistle the score was 5-4 to United.
HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "We played better today than we have in our last few games, our team game has improved, we just need to find the back of the net. We created so many chances today, if we continue to play like this and create this amount of chances, we should be alright."
HBU manager Phil McVey added: "We made hard work of that, Middlesbrough are a good side, and we let them back into the game. Our performance was a massive improvement on the last game, but we have to start taking our chances. We are making life difficult for ourselves. Our next game is away against Bury, last year's runners up. If we want to beat them we are going to have finish well. Overall, we showed plenty of improvement, but more is necessary."

Herne Bay United v Lipson
United were a much stronger team and able to move the ball easily between players allowing them to score frequently. All members contributed to the score line with Ashley Barton (5) Lewis Greenwood (3) Harry Rowbotham (3) Alex Mount (2) Michael Gregory (1) and Tom Barton (1). Lipson found no way into the game and the final score was United 15 Lipson 0.
Herne Bay United V Herne Bay
This was a very exciting game and both teams were working hard to make the break. Ashley Barton made several attempts on goal with the ball bouncing off the goal cage. Harry Rowbotham was very strong in defence and the first goal was an own goal by Herne Bay. Within the third minute of the second half Alex Mount scored an exciting goal and United continued to hold on without conceding, until the game ended. Final score HBU 2 Herne Bay 0.
Herne Bay United V Farnham
The games were getting harder and Farnham were first to score taking the first two goals. Edward Mount made some great saves and United had to work really hard to fight back. 2 long shots from both Alex Mount and Ashley Barton leveled the score line. Farnham then went ahead again, but excellent team work and passing by all team members assisted with the additional goals from Alex and Ashley. Final score Farnham 3 HBU 4.
Herne Bay United V East Grinstead
United were quick to take the first two goals by both Alex and Ashley, however East Grinstead soon found their way into the game. Similar to the Farnham game United found themselves playing against older boys who were much bigger and stronger. Perseverance from Harry, Michael and Lewis in defence, and Eddie being alert in goal didn't give East Grinstead any more chances to score. It looked like the game was going to draw until the last minute when a final attempt on goal in the top corner came off for Ashley and a well deserved win for United. Final score HBU 3 East Grinstead 2.

Both Herne Bay United Under 11's teams travelled to Comberton to play in the Eastern Counties League on Saturday.
The Vipers' first game was against Cottenham. The team passed well throughout with some good moves. They dominated the game leaving no opportunity for their opposition to break. Goals were scored by Ashley Barton (9), Alex Mount (2), Harry Rowbotham (2) and Tom Barton (1) giving the Vipers a resounding 14 - 0 victory.
Their second game against Norwich was almost identical as the Vipers totally outplayed their opposition. This time goals from Alex Mount (5), Ashley Barton (6) and Lewis Greenwood (2) produced an excellent 13 - 0 win.
The Vipers' final game against EC Select proved slightly tougher and more eventful. Two penalties were awarded against EC Select, Ashley Barton and Alex Mount both scoring from the spot into the top left hand corner of the goal. With three further goals from Ashley Barton, two more from Alex Mount and one apiece for Harry Rowbotham and Lewis Greenwood the Vipers were again comfortable 9 - 0 winners.
The Adders' first game was against Norwich. The team worked well although Norwich scored the first goal. However a long range shot from Sam Whiffen ensured the teams ended the first half level. More pressure in the second half allowed Charlie Botting, Michael Gregory and Brandon Thomas to score and the Adders won the match 4 - 1.
Their second match against EC Select was much more defensive although the Adders finished the half in the lead through an early goal from Michael Gregory. EC Select scored from a rebound and the Adders became unsettled after this letting in another two quick goals. They steadied again after Michael Gregory scored with his rebounded penalty shot but EC Select were still able to score another two goals and the Adders lost 2 - 5.
The Adders' final game was against Cottenham and again Michael Gregory got another quick goal in the first half. The teams were evenly matched in this game and it took most of the first half for Cottenham to equalise. The second half gave plenty of chances for both teams with Michael Gregory scoring another two and Cottenham also netting two. The game ended 3 - 3.
HBU Vipers now top the table while HBU Adders remain in 4th place.
HBU Vipers: Ashley Barton, Tom Barton, Lewis Greenwood, Alex Mount, Eddie Mount, Harry Rowbotham

The team played their first game against the England Ladies team, and with some good team passing won this game with comparative ease, the final score HBU 7 - 2 England Ladies.
The second game against the Bury A team was a different story altogether with Bury A continually testing HBU's keeper, although the game was end to end and neither team had all the possession, the physical strength and experience of the Bury Team, who are all senior players, against HBU's team, which only had one senior player, paid off with the final score Bury A 9 - 2 HBU.
HBU's final game was against Bury B, in this game HBU were able to get into their stride and were able to put 9 goals past the Bury B keeper, with the final score in this game Bury B 4 - 9 HBU.

The two Herne Bay United teams faced each other for the 2nd time this season in the National Premier League, last time HBU (1) ran out comfortable winners 8-1, but this time it was to be a different story.
HBU (1) started strongly, and it was them who made all the early running. HBU CSL had to defend right from the opening whistle. They held out for 7 minutes but eventually the pressure told as Simon Hosking burst through to finish coolly to make it 1-0 to the champions. A minute and a half later some fine interplay between Nick Espejo and Hosking created another chance which Hosking finished well to make it 2-0. Momentum was now with HBU (1), and a minute later Brendan Barker scored with a close range effort to make it 3-0.
Although HBU continued to press for more goals HBU CSL gradually got into the game, Steve Clarke hit a post and Paul McVey also came close. With 10 minutes remaining in the half, HBU CSL's young star James Hoare scored after he was left unmarked in the penalty area to bring the score back to 3-1. HBU (1) did not let the goal affect them and they continued to press CSL all over the rink. This tactic paid dividends as Hosking scored his 3rd with a well taken penalty that beat keeper Priestley to make it 4-1. The pace of the game was very fast and HBU CSL struggled to cope with the superior pace of HBU (1), the difference in pace was shown by Neil Austin who beat 2 players and rifled the ball home to make it 5-1 with 8 minutes to go in the half.
HBU CSL has shown huge improvement this season, and they refused to give in. The tide was beginning to turn as they began to create more chances. With 7 minutes remaining youngster Hoare found veteran striker Paul McVey unmarked in the box, and he stuck the ball away to make it 5-2. Two minutes later Paul McVey scored again with the goal of the game. Player coach Phil McVey beat a player before lofting the ball in the air to his brother who hit the ball on the volley into the top left corner of the goal to make it 5-3. Although both teams created more chances, there were no more goals before half-time.
The second half saw HBU CSL start the stronger and within a minute Charlie Pughe scored at Dan Barton's near post to make it 5-4. The champions now knew they were in a game, and as both teams fought for every ball the match was becoming heated, with players from both teams squaring up to each other, the referees had to step in on more than one occasion. HBU(1)'s fine team play paid off again as they caught HBU CSL on the break, Hosking scored his 4th of the game to make it 6-4 with 19 minutes remaining. Unfazed HBU CSL came straight back at them and they had pulled it back to 6-5 with a long range effort from Joe Fidock beating an unsighted keeper. HBU again upped their tempo and although Dave Garlick pulled off a string of fine saves he was helpless as HBU added 2 goals in quick succession through Austin and then Karl Smith to make the score 8-5 with 12 minutes remaining.
HBU CSL again refused to roll over, and after some fine team play Steve Clarke scored to make it 8-6 with 11 minutes remaining. Although HBU CSL did create a few chances in the game, they found it increasingly difficult as HBU used their experience and excellent team play, keeping the ball and running the clock down. The game ended 8-6 to HBU (1), although HBU CSL had ran them close HBU (1) were the worthy winners of a close fought game.
After the game HBU captain Simon Hosking said:"That was by far and away the toughest game we have had all season. It's been a hard weekend and we haven't performed at our best in either match, but we've got 6 points from 6, and we are a step closer to the title."
HBU CSL captain Joe Fidock said: "We are pleased with our performance, we pushed them all the way and we competed with them. It shows how much we have improved this season, we need to build on the two results this weekend, idealy we want to win all our remaining games. If we can we will end up 2nd in the league."
Player coach of HBU CSL Phil McVey added: "I am absolutely delighted with our performance today, the lads battled for everything and they pulled together as a team. The improvement this season has been huge, and if we don't win all of our remaining games this season we will have let ourselves down. As club coach I was also quite pleased with the way HBU (1) used their experience to run the clock down at the end, I haven't had the opportunity to work with them that much this season, but they are performing well, and if they keep their concentration they should win the league without dropping any points, that should be their aim. My aim as club coach is to get both HBU sides to the top of the league."

HBU CSL met Herne Utd at the Pier on Saturday night to play the first of two tough matches they had to play during the weekend.
The game for HBU CSL started shakily with Herne Utd scoring after just 6 minutes into the game, HBU CSL were unable to respond positively and were finding it difficult to pull their game together, despite rotating players. However 20 minutes into the game both Joe King and Paul McVey scored within half a minute of each other but Herne responded with four minutes left on the clock taking the game into half time even at 2-2 a piece.
The second half started the same way as the first with Herne Utd slotting in another goal, but HBU CSL's Captain Joe Fidock responded on the 18th minute bringing the score back to 3 a piece. The game continually ebbed and flowed, but HBU CSL gritted their teeth and a good goal was scored by Arran Bowyer. Herne responded yet again, but the fitness of HBU CSL started to show and they finally got their game together with the winning goals scored by both Paul McVey and Arran Bowyer. The game finishing a win for HBU CSL 6 - 4 Herne Utd.
A great sigh of relief was given up by the team. The Captain Joe Fidock said, "The team couldn't get started tonight and we all appeared to be just slightly off our game. We knew that we had to beat Herne tonight to maintain our place in the league and to prove that we are a truly emerging team. The whole team is getting stronger as all the players are being played in every game."

HBU's Intermediate Squad travelled to Manningtree, Essex on Sunday to take part in an Eastern Counties Under 15 Tournament.
They started the day playing against a very young team from Norwich. HBU played this game with only four out players as the fifth man Sam Rowbotham was on a one match ban from the previous Tournament and the team were missing Ben Barton through illness. Despite this they finished the game with a 5 - 1 win.
The rest of the games were always going to be tough as HBU were going to be playing against teams with players at the top end of the age range and physically bigger but this didn't deter the team. Despite only having one reserve they all gritted their teeth and played their games with great determination and energy and never let their heads go down and become despondent.
In the second game against Kings Lynn the score was held 2 - 2 at half time, in the second half Kings Lynn upped the tempo but the lack of substitutes on the HBU bench took its toll on the players that were on the rink and they were unable to stop the flow of shots on goal by Kings Lynn, the final score being Kings Lynn 8 - 3 HBU.
The third game against Bury was another physically tough game, this time Bury hit hard in the first half putting five goals against HBU, but through some good team passing Sam Rowbotham finished the passes and put two goals in for HBU. The second half was a more equal contest with two goals from Bury and a third from Sam Rowbotham for HBU. Final score HBU 3 - 7 Bury.
The final game of the day against Cambridge couldn't come soon enough for a very tired HBU team, but this was the most exciting game of the day for HBU. They found hidden reserves from somewhere and the first half of the game was played at great speed from end to end with Cambridge scoring first then Alfie Sheppard bringing the score back to one a piece. The whole of this half was played in the same fashion, Cambridge scoring then HBU, the half finished with Cambridge 5 - 4 HBU. The second half was played in the same fashion but with the HBU team tiring, the final score was Cambridge 7 - 5 HBU. A very commendable score from HBU. Testimony to their energy and commitment and excellent goalkeeping.

Herne Bay United maintained their 100% record in the Premier League, albeit unconvincingly, with a 4-2 victory over Grimsby at the Pier on Saturday night. The home side started off at their usual high tempo creating a vast number of chances. However, the tone for the match was set as the visiting goalkeeper was in superb form and those shots that managed to beat him struck the frame of the goal.
Eventually the breakthrough was achieved as Simon Hosking was able to weave past a couple of defenders before calmly slotting home at the near post. Unfortunately this did not signal the opening of the floodgates and following the goal more chances were created and missed through a combination of good goalkeeping and some woeful finishing. Eventually with ten minutes of the half remaining the lead was doubled when Brendan Barker dropped the ball into the near post and the Grimsby captain was unable to do anything other than deflect it into his own net.
Still the chances came and they continued to be missed. These included two penalties which only produced two more saves from the goalkeeper. As the pressure mounted United were able to put together a slick passing move which resulted in Barker being able to sweep the ball into an empty net. Grimsby however, responded with their first meaningful attacks of the game and were able to fire home past an unsighted Danny Barton to bring the score to 3-1, where it remained until halftime.
The second half started with Grimsby being buoyed by their finish to the first half and were able to reduce the deficit to one goal following some poor defending by Herne Bay United. Following this the match became a cagey affair with the Champions not being able to find their usual form and started giving up too many chances to the visitors through lapses of concentration and trying to force the game. However, Grimsby were not able to draw level and with five minutes remaining Barker scored his second goal to give Herne Bay United some breathing space. This goal calmed the home side and they were able to take control of the ball and run the clock down to ensure the points were not travelling back up to Lincolnshire.
Following the match Hosking commented "It certainly wasn't our best performance of the season but playing badly and winning is the sign of a strong team and takes us 3 points closer to retaining the title."
United's season continues on the March 24th with an away game at Letchworth followed the next morning at home against Middlesbrough.
Team vs. Grimsby: D Barton (GK); A Gregory; K Smith; M Barton; S Hosking (C) [1]; N Austin; D Hudson; B Barker [2]; N Espejo; P Nelson (GK).

A Herne Bay United Under 11's team travelled to St Omer in France at the weekend to compete in a tournament against two St Omer teams, as well as those from Cronenberg and Walsum in Germany, and Valkanswaard in Holland.
On Saturday the team played two matches in Pool B. The first was against St Omer B. The game began openly with end to end play but neither side was able to break the other's defence and try for a shot on goal. As the game progressed more chances were created but it was ten minutes into the game before St Omer scored the first goal when United's defence failed to respond to their opponent's break. However, this seemed to inspire United and less than a minute later Ashley Barton equalised and his second followed after just 45 seconds. United continue to press St Omer's defence and two more goals came in the last two minutes, one from Michael Gregory and a third for Ashley Barton.
The second half began with United in control and Alex Mount scored after 90 seconds. St Omer then created a number of chances before Alex Mount scored again a few minutes later. The game then swung back and forth with both teams working well in attack and defence. Two minutes from the end St Omer scored a second goal but straight from the restart Alex Mount claimed his hat-trick and the game ended 7 - 2 to HBU.
The second pool game was against Walsum and was played to the enthusiastic air-horn support of the German side. It was a very fast game and United had to play defensively as the German team was strong in attack. Although United managed a few shots on goal it was Walsum who scored first five minutes into the game. Numerous saves from keeper Eddie Mount ensured that this was the only goal of the half.
The second half started promisingly for United as Alex Mount came close but the team were soon defending again. Walsum scored two quick goals during a long spell of possession and it wasn't until the end of the half that United began pressing the German team again. Unluckily Walsum scored a final goal 30 seconds from the end and the game ended 4 - 0 to Walsum.
Their results put United in 2nd place in Pool B and set them up for a semi final against St Omer A on Sunday. St Omer A are a very strong team. HBU defended well but conceded two goals in the first half. Despite good work from the whole team they didn't find an opportunity to even the score and it remained St Omer A 2 - HBU 0.
This meant United went into the play off for third and fourth places against Cronenberg. This proved to be a really exciting game throughout. Cronenberg were first to get a goal but this was counteracted by an HBU goal by Alex Mount. HBU continued to dominate throughout the first half but great saves from Cronenberg's goalie left it 1 all at half time. The second half saw HBU break away. Good tactical play and team performance meant Cronenberg were unable to find a way into the game and further goals followed from Alex Mount (2), Michael Gregory (1) and the final goal from Ashley Barton (1). Excellent defensive play from United and good passing between players led to a well deserved victory giving them 3rd place in the tournament overall.

Both Herne Bay United Under 11's teams travelled to Manningtree for an ECRHA tournament on Saturday, playing a total of six games between them.
The first game was between HBU Adders and Kings Lynn. This was a much more open match than their previous meeting with chances for the Adders to score. Unfortunately Kings Lynn again proved to be a much stronger side and finished 0 - 9 winners although Adders' keeper Joseph Upton saved a penalty and produced a number of good saves to keep the score down.
HBU Vipers followed with their match against Cambridge. Vipers found it an easy game with every member of the team taking the opportunity to build a good goal difference. Alex Mount scored 4, Ashley Barton 7, Harry Rowbotham 1, Lewis Greenwood 1 and Tom Barton 2 so that the Vipers ended the game convincing winners at 15 - 0.
HBU Adders returned to the rink to play Cottenham. This time the Adders worked lots of attacking play and had the majority of the possession gaining their first win of the season 4 - 2 with three goals from Michael Gregory and one from Brandon Thomas.
The next match was a top of the table clash between Kings Lynn and HBU Vipers. With two strong teams it was an exciting contest especially as both were so far unbeaten this season. However, it was Vipers' determination that proved strongest and with 4 goals from Ashley Barton and 2 from Alex Mount they ran out 6 - 2 winners.
The next match involved both HBU teams. Vipers started the game with three quick goals before Adders collected their defence but Vipers still finished the first half 7 - 0 up. The second half started with a total collapse of the Adders defence and the Vipers capitalised on this with four goals inside the first two minutes. The Adders' keeper saved another penalty but with a total of 3 goals to Alex Mount, 2 for Harry Rowbotham, 4 for Ashley Barton, 3 for Lewis Greenwood and 3 for Tom Barton the Vipers were again the runaway 15 - 0 winners.
The final match was HBU Adders against Cambridge. Despite their tired legs the Adders gave their best performance of the day displaying good teamwork and some excellent attacking play. Two goals from Michael Gregory and one each from Brandon Thomas and Connor Botting secured a 4 - 1 victory.
HBU Vipers are second in the league, four points behind leaders Kings Lynn but with three games in hand. HBU Adders are now in 4th place.

Herne Bay United CSL caused the upset of the season so far, beating last years runners up 11-8 here at the Pier on Sunday morning.
Again United were slow out of the blocks, and Bury capitalised going 0-1 up within 4 minutes of the start. United were struggling to maintain possession, and were too slow in attack, this gave Bury the chance to pressure the local side. Their tactics worked, with 10 minutes gone Bury were 0-5 up, and it was looking like it was going to be a rout. United coach Phil McVey called a time out and spoke to the players. United went out with instructions to speed things up, they did and they forced the Bury keeper into a string of fine saves. It was Bury who scored the next goal, they hit United on the break and went 0-6 up with 4 minutes remaining in the half. United continued to improve, and with only 2 minutes left in the first half Arran Bowyer pulled one back for United with a well taken slap shot. (1-6). Then a minute later captain Joe Fidock scored with a blistering shot to make the score at halftime 2-6.
United's Player manager spoke to all the players, insisting they were good enough to come back and win. If they pass and skate, and up the tempo they can make up the 4 goals and go on and win. With renewed belief United started the second half a different side, it took them 13 seconds and 10 passes to score their first in the second half, Liam Holland finishing an excellent team move. The score was now 3-6. Bury seemed stunned, and United looked like a side who now believed they could win. Three minutes later Steve Clarke pulled another one back for United to make it 4-6. Bury knew they were in a game now, and the game seemed to intensify, both teams were creating chances, and both keepers were making some great saves. It was Bury who scored next, with a well taken finish to put make the score 4-7 with 15 minutes remaining. The visitors scored almost immediately afterwards as United lost focus for a moment. The score was now 4-8. Bury were tiring, and with 13 minutes left their coach called a timeout. This was a godsend for United's player coach McVey as it gave him an opportunity to get his team together and regroup. Again the stoppage suited United, straight from the restart Paul McVey scored a close range effort to make it 5-8. United were now dominating proceedings, and Bury seemed to visibly tire under the continuous pressure being placed upon them. Then a minute later United won a free hit just outside the Bury penalty area. Coach McVey and captain Fidock worked a set play perfectly for Fidock to finish with an excellent effort to make the score 6-8.
United coach McVey then called his timeout, with 6 minutes left he rallied the players, got them focused on what they had to do. Again straight from the restart United made their stand and Charlie Pughe scored at the end of an excellent team move to make it 7-8.
Bury were now beginning to panic, and could not keep the ball. United seemed to step up the pace of their game and with only 4 minutes remaining Paul McVey scored to level the game at 8-8. Immediately from the restart United's James Hoare score his first of the evening to put United ahead for the first time in the match. The score was now 9-8.
Bury threw everything they could at United, United's defence held firm, Bury over committed, and they left gaps in their defence which United's Hoare used scoring his 2nd of the evening with 3 minutes remaining, making it 10-8. Bury were now in complete disarray, and with 2 minutes left in the match Hoare scored his 3rd goal to make the score at the final whistle 11-8 to HBU CSL.
After the match captain Joe Fidock said: "We are delighted. We lost 23-3 to them last season, we've been working hard at training, and we've been listening to the coach, and we are now proving to ourselves and the rest of country that we are a good side. The lads are over the moon in the dressing room. We will enjoy this win today, we want to say thanks to the gaffer for the belief he has shown in us. We turned a corner as team today, and we're delighted."
Player manager Phil McVey added: "It doesn't happen often, that as a manager everything you do in the game, all the changes you make work out for you. It did today, and I'm delighted with the result. We had a good draw last night against a solid Letchworth team, and we've built on that with a brilliant win against Bury. The lads have been magnificent, and I want to mention one player. James Hoare, he has shown a lot of dedication this season, and he scored one of the quickest hat-tricks ever scored in the Premier League today. I'm thrilled for the players. We need to build on this now. It's no good beating one of the top teams in the league if you don't follow it up with a win in your next game."

Herne Bay United faced their toughest weekend of the season so far as they had 2 games, one away against Letchworth on the Saturday evening, and one at home against Bury on the Sunday morning.
United started the match slowly, and Letchworth dominated possession and chances from the beginning. It didn't take them long to capitalise on their superiority, and they scored twice in quick succession to put them 2-0 with 10 minutes remaining in the half. United could not seem to step up the pace of their game, and Letchworth continued to push for more goals. They were rewarded for their efforts as they scored another 2 goals in close succession to put United 4-0 down with 5 minutes remaining in the first half. United needed something special to kick start their team game, it came form Charlie Pughe, who beat 2 players before slotting the ball home past the Letchworth keeper. At halftime the score was 4-1.
Player manager Phil McVey told the team if they raised their game they could get something out of the game. The second half started and it became clear that United were up for it, and all of a sudden it was them who were creating chances. With 15 minutes left Joe Fidock scored with a long range slap shot to make it 4-2. United were now in the ascendancy and the Letchworth players were beginning to lose control. With 5 minutes left Phil McVey beat 2 players before squaring the ball to his brother Paul who rolled it into the empty net to make the game 4-3. United continued to push their opponents and the pressure paid off, with 1 minute remaining Fidock found Paul McVey, who turned and rifled a shot into the top corner to make the game 4-4. Although both teams had chances in the final minute the score at the final whistle was 4-4.
United captain Joe Fidock said: "To be honest it was fair result, neither team deserved to lose, it was a hard match between 2 very evenly matched teams."

Herne Bay United under 15 team travelled to Soham on Sunday to compete in the Division 1 intermediate tournament of the Eastern Counties roller hockey league.
They started well with a 5 - 3 win over Cambridge with the goals coming from Sam Rowbotham (3) and Alfie Shepherd (2).
They next had to play the league leaders, Kings Lynn. This was a difficult encounter, with many of the Kings Lynn team being at the top of the age group. HBU fought valiantly finally going down 9 - 1, the consolation goal coming from an excellent 3 prong attack with Sam Rowbotham, Alfie Shepherd and the goal scorer, Rebecca Lawrence. The score line does not reflect the concerted team performance with some excellent goal keeping from Kelly Fox and some well executed defending from Emily Shepherd and Adam McVey.
The final game was against Norwich, who fielded a different team from the last tournament. This was to be HBU's best performance of the day with an excellent 4 - 1 win. Sam and Alfie worked extremely hard and were supported by some good work from Kelly in the HBU goal and Adam in defence. Rebecca and Emily teamed up well, which bodes well for their up and coming trip to Portugal at Easter as part of the England Ladies U19 team.

On Saturday Herne Bay United Under 11 Adders travelled to Kings Lynn for their second tournament in the ECRHA league. The first game against Ely was very exciting with end to end play. With evenly matched teams United were able to pass up the rink and have a number of attempts on goal. They also defended well for the majority of the match although bad positioning and careless clearing resulted in all of Ely's goals. The final score was Ely 6 - 4 HBU Adders, Michael Gregory scoring all four goals.
The second game against E C Select was a much harder game. For most of the game United had to play in their own half although they still managed a number of attacking moves. They took the lead through Michael Gregory halfway through the first half and then defended strongly for the rest of the match. All members of the team played well and there were some excellent saves from goalkeeper Joseph Upton, including one off his face mask. Unfortunately three minutes from time E C Select scored an equaliser and the game ended 1 - 1.
The final game was against Kings Lynn, a very strong side mostly of upper age players. United found this a very tough game and played in their own half for the whole of the first half. Again the whole team defended well but by half time they were down 5 - 0, Kings Lynn's fifth being scored right on the whistle. United finally worked some attacking play in the last five minutes of the match and were rewarded with a goal scored by Brandon Thomas from a rebound. The final score was Kings Lynn 6 - 1 HBU Adders.

Herne Bay United entered teams at all age levels in this year's National Cup Qualifiers in an attempt to qualify for the National Cup Finals to be held in July.
On Saturday HBU Under 11's team played against Manchester in the semi final of their age group and had great success beating Manchester 13 - 0. They will now play Ely in the Finals. The Under 13's team also played on Saturday in their age group against Manchester but did not have as much success and lost their game 6 - 0. They will not be in the Finals.
On Sunday we had three age groups entered, the Under 15's were drawn against Manchester and lost their game 8 - 4, but this was an exciting game and the score line doesn't do justice to the way the game was played, HBU's team is a very young team and were competing against top age U15 players. Hopefully next year there will be a different outcome.
The Under 20's then played against Bury who are a very strong Eastern Counties team, HBU's team consisted of both Under 20 and Under 17 players. This was another exciting game both sides displaying clever passing team hockey. The first goal conceded by HBU was scored by one of our own players and gave Bury the advantage. We then had to fight hard to get back the equaliser before half time. The second half was played at the same pace as the first, HBU secured a penalty at the start of the second half and this was well converted by the Captain. Within another minute HBU were 3 - 1 ahead putting the pressure back on to Bury who then scored bringing the score to 3 - 2. With 4 minutes on the clock HBU went up 4 - 2 with Bury scoring within the last 2 minutes, final score HBU 4 - 3 Bury. HBU Juniors meet Middlesbrough in the Cup Finals.
The last game of the day was the Under 17's where HBU met Kings Lynn. HBU have played against Kings Lynn several times during this season and have found them very strong opposition. The first half was played well by HBU and the half time score was 1 - 1. Within a few minutes of the second half Kings Lynn had gone ahead 2 - 1 but HBU came back quickly making it 2 - 2, we kept up the pressure but ran out of energy allowing Kings Lynn to go 2 - 3 ahead, with the final score HBU 2 - 4 Kings Lynn.

Herne Bay United continued their impressive 100% start to the season on Saturday night and moved to the top of the Premier League table with a fine 13-5 victory over local rivals Herne United at the Pier Pavilion.
From the start Herne Bay United enjoyed the lion's share of possession as Herne set out their stall by defending very deep and attempting to deny Herne Bay United any space in front of goal. These tactics managed to keep the scores level for five minutes until some good passing created space for the Captain Simon Hosking who fired home from close range past Herne Goalkeeper Steve Dudley. This goal was followed just 12 seconds later with a fine drive by Brendan Barker.
Herne were able to regroup after the second goal and settled back into their defensive pattern surrendering the majority of possession to Herne Bay United. The next 10 minutes saw the champions continuously probing, trying to add to their lead but ultimately being denied by a combination of a hard working defence and some woeful finishing. In fact it was Herne who scored next through one of their few attacks when Peter Taylor fired past Dan Barton following a period of confusion in the Herne Bay United defence who were adamant that a foul had been committed in the build up.
This disappointment of conceding a goal only served to galvanise Herne Bay United and in the final ten minutes of the half they managed to score a further 3 goals, including two superbly worked team goals finished by Neil Austin and Chris Espejo. Although the half time score was 5-1 the team talk emphasised the need to score as many goals as possible in order to improve the team's goal difference.
Brendan Barker immediately set about improving this as he robbed a Herne defender straight from the restart and rounded the goalkeeper to increase the lead just nine seconds into the second half. Herne Bay United then forgot about defending and allowed Herne to grab two quick goals before Barker again stepped up to the plate and scored the game's next 3 goals to put the result beyond any doubt. He had the chance to further increase his tally from the penalty spot but instead blazed wide and the opportunity was lost.
Although Herne managed to score twice more bringing their game tally to 5, Herne Bay United were able to add 4 more goals including two from Simon Hosking to complete his hat-trick and a cheeky lob in the final minute from Neil Austin.
The match finished 13-5 and was enough to put Herne Bay United on top of the table and gives them a healthy goal difference over their closest rivals Bury St Edmunds. Speaking after the game, Captain Simon Hosking said "It's never easy against Herne as they are a big physical side who don't let you settle into any rhythm, but fortunately we were able to make our class tell without ever hitting top gear. The league table makes good reading at the moment but we are aware that we still have a lot of hard work to do if it is to stay this way."
Team (Goalscorers in Brackets): D. Barton (GK), K. Smith, S. Hosking (4) Capt, N. Austin (2), D. Hudson, B. Barker (5), C. Espejo (1), N. Espejo. (plus 1 own goal from Herne's P Taylor)

HBU Schoolboys team travelled to Kings Lynn on Sunday to play in an Eastern Counties tournament.
The Kings Lynn Centre, although a good facility, contains a small rink some 4 metres shorter than the Pier Pavilion at Herne Bay, HBUs home rink, and does not suit HBUs style of hockey and we had to adjust our game to suit the conditions which is not easy for our players.
The first game was against the local team Kings Lynn and this became a very frantic, bruising affair. However our team were not playing cohesive team hockey and were lucky to go into half time only 2-0 down. In the second half the team worked harder and it became a very exhilarating fast game ending HBU 2 5 Kings Lynn.
The second game against Norwich was an altogether different affair, one because of a team talk during the break and the team settling down to playing their proper team game. They went into half time 7-2 ahead and finished the game 12-3 winners.
The last game against Bury B again was a hard, fast and exciting game with end to end hockey. The half time score HBU 3-1 Bury B, the final score was HBU 6-1 Bury B.
This tournament was a good warm up for the Schoolboys team who are taking part in the National Cup Qualifiers in Peterborough this coming weekend, along with other HBU teams Under 11s, Under 13s, Under 15s and Under 20s.

Herne Bay United made their longest trip of the season on Sunday determined to maintain their 100% start to the season. Aware that Middlesborough always provide a stern test the team began the match at a high tempo so as not to let the home side settle into any rythym. This approach was rewarded in just the second minute as Simon Hosking, the team's captain, led by example and rifled a ferocious slap shot into the top corner leaving the goalkeeper motionless.
This early goal flushed away any nerves and Herne Bay United were able to take control of the game by adding two further goals in the first ten minutes of the match. Both these goals were scored by Brendan Barker, the first was a simple tap in after a skilful dribble past the last defender and the goalkeeper. His second was a well dispatched penalty converted after Barker himself had been brought down in the penalty area.
At 3-0 the team were cruising and deservedly added a fourth when Dendy Hudson was able to finish off a slick passing move. Middlesborough, however, never stopped battling and they pulled a goal back with 9 minutes of the half remaining following a goalmouth scramble. This goal only served to reawaken the League leaders and they showed their class by adding two more goals before halftime through Barker and Hosking to make the score 6-1.
The second half started with another blitz from Herne Bay United and they were rewarded even quicker than the first half as Hudson bagged his second goal less than a minute after the restart. From this point on the game was over as a contest with the Champions looking in complete control and adding an eighth goal with 8 minutes remaining through Neil Austin. In the final five minutes as Herne Bay United were thinking about the long journey home Middlesborough scored a couple of consolations but this was too little too late as in truth they were never in the game. The game finished 8-3 and there could be no doubting that this was a fair result.
Following the game hat-trick hero Barker said, "Obviously I'm delighted with my goals but really today was all about the team's effort and every single player deserves the credit for an excellent performance that keeps us on course to retain our league title."
Team: Dan Barton (GK), Andy Gregory, Karl Smith, Simon Hosking (2) Capt, Neil Austin (1), Dendy Hudson (2), Brendan Barker (3), Chris Espejo, Nic Espejo.

HBU CSL faced tough opposition on Sunday in their 3rd Premier League match of the season. Last year United were soundly beaten 23-1. This season however, United were much stronger.
Bury started the game strongly and Carlos Amoral put the home side 1-0 up inside 45 seconds. Twenty seconds later Bury captain Darrell Pearce doubled their lead. United's defence was all over the place, they did begin to settle but Bury were flying and United struggled to get out of their own half. With 18 minutes left in the half, Amoral scored his 2nd of the game to put Bury 3-0 up. United could not get into their stride and individual errors were costing them. A minute later Jess I'Anson put the home side 4-0 up. United hadn't even had an effort on Bury's goal, and it looked as if Bury would better their record score of the previous year. Player manager Phil McVey called a time-out, so United could re-group. Immediately after the time-out there was a slight improvement from United but they were still well below their best. With 10 minutes remaining Pearce made it 5-0. United however were slowly beginning to get some passing going, and were now creating some chances. Bury continued to dominate in all aspects of the game and with 4 minutes remaining Amoral made it 6-0. United managed to keep Bury at bay for the remainder of the half and even won a penalty. Player manager McVey struck it cleanly but the Bury keeper made a good save to deny him. At half-time it was 6-0 to the home side.
After some words at half-time from McVey, United started the 2nd half determined to give Bury a game. However, after just 20 seconds Bury were 7-0 up, another defensive lapse let I'Anson in to score his 2nd. McVey again called a time-out and spoke to the players. The next 7 minutes saw United gradually get into the game, and all of a sudden it was them who were dominating possesion, and creating chance after chance. Unfortunately, the United players could not put the ball in the back of the net; Arran Bowyer, Paul McVey, Joe Fidock and Steve Clark all hit the woodwork within a 2 minute period. Finally with 13 minutes remaining United found their game, Phil McVey beat 3 players before crossing the ball to the far post were Steve Clark had a simple tap-in to make it 7-1. The goal seemed to spur United on, it was Bury who were now struggling with the pace and power of United's game. Robert Carnell came close as did Charlie Pughe, but again United could not find the back of the net. Then with 10 minutes remaining Phil McVey beat 2 players before scoring with a drive which found the top corner; 7-2. A minute later McVey scored again to make it 7-3. Bury were now panicking, the home side were trapped in their own half, and United were creating chance after chance. Then with 7 minutes remaining Amoral caught United on the break and finished well passed United's keeper, Garrett Priestley, to make it 8-3. The United players did not drop their heads, in fact they attacked Bury with renewed vigour, with 3 minutes left Arran Bowyer scored with an excellent slap shot from a tight angle to make it 8-4. The chase was now back on. Twenty seconds later Bury captain Darrell Pearce pulled down Steve Clark in the area, and it was a penalty to United. Up stepped Phil McVey, who having had a penalty saved earlier in the game, made no mistake this time to make the score 8-5. With only 2 minutes left in the game United again struck the woodwork through Paul McVey but unfortunately they ran out of time. At the final whistle, Bury had ran out winners 8-5.
After the game United captain Joe Fidock said: "Bury thought they were going to thrash us like they did last season, we knew it would be tough but we gifted them the first 5 goals. At half-time the gaffer told us if we knuckled down and worked hard, we could come back and win. We almost did, if we had taken our chances in the second half we would have run out comfotable winners. We are all disappointed because we let ourselves down in the first half. We just have to work hard, listen to the gaffer in training, and hopefully we can make sure the same thing doesn't happen in our next match."
Player manager Phil McVey added: "It was definitely a game of 2 halves, we didn't even turn up for the first half, and Bury deserved their 6-0 lead. I spoke to the lads at half-time and I was pleased with the way they reacted; in the second half, we dominated Bury, and if we can play like that we can be a match for any side in the country. But, you can't give a side like Bury a 6-0 start and expect to win. I've seen the stats, in the 1st half they had 30 shots on target to our 5, in the 2nd half they had 8 shots on target to our 42. If we are going to stay in this league the players are going to have to step up when it matters. You won't win games if you can't put the ball in the back of the net. We are going to have to work harder at training on our finishing, and also make sure we play the whole game, not just for one half. Overall I'm extremely disappointed with the first half performance, and pleased with the second half performance. The lads have shown me they can perform at this level. They need to learn from this, so that next time we don't gift the opposition goals in the 1st 10 minutes of the game. I'm confident they can do it."

The Junior Team with one senior player and two schoolboys travelled to Norwich on Sunday to participate in an Eastern Counties Senior Division One Tournament. The first game was against Ipswich Seniors. The half time score was HBU 6 - 1 Ipswich. During the second half the HBU players had become complacent and it took all that the team had to hold the game to a 7 - 7 draw.
The second game was against the Bury Senior A team (runners up to HBU 1 in the Premier League last season) consisting of all Premier league players. This was always going to be a very high energy affair and no-one was disappointed, the game attracting the attention of a large number of spectators. The Manager, Ken Pughe said "I knew that we must use all of our players equally, as often an average rested player is more effective than a very tired talented player". This strategy and the other tactics employed worked well to our advantage. HBU defended well and counter attacked fast and efficiently. The game went to half time with Bury leading 4 - 2, during the second half HBU pushed much harder and the game became a very hard, fast and physical game and at times tempers flared on both sides. With the score Bury 5 - 4 HBU and with a minute on the clock HBU counter attacked, catching Bury with all their players in attacking positions, and scored the equaliser with the game finishing a 5 - 5 draw.
The last game of the day was against Norwich Seniors, HBU were tired and had to work hard to get ahead with the half time score Norwich 1 - 2 HBU. In the second half the fitness of the HBU players showed and were able to take advantage of the opposition and ended the game Norwich 2 - 5 HBU.

Herne Bay United's Under 13 team excelled in the Farnham Shield on Sunday.
The team consists of very young players the majority of them being Under 11, with one playing in his first ever tournament, performed well and above expectations.
They were entered in to the Farnham Shield Tournament not expecting to achieve more than a low position, but in the event they finished in a very commendable fourth place, winning two games and losing two. They found themselves playing against top end age group players who were also physically larger. It was always going to be a tough tournament but they all worked exceptionally hard and fully played their part. The Captain, Alfie Sheppard worked hard to help his team along together with Becca Lawrence, both encouraging the U11 players, Ashley Barton, Alex Mount, Harry Rowbotham who all made outstanding contributions to the games with Connor Hampshire, and Jamie Robertson who was playing in his first ever tournament also played well. The goalkeepers Kelly Fox and Eddie Mount (another U11) were again outstanding.
It was an excellent tournament and enjoyed by all who took part.

Sunday's match was always going to be a keenly contested affair as Herne Bay United 2 were looking to cause an upset over the reigning champions and club rivals. Again, Herne Bay United started at a high tempo, but came up against a resolute and determined defence. Chances were created but again the majority of the shots failed to trouble the keeper meaning the match remained goalless and Herne Bay Utd2 started to believe they could get something out of the match.
The Champions finally managed to score after 10 minutes when Brendan Barker found Neil Austin free in the area and he made no mistake with the low flick shot. This goal did not demoralise the underdogs and they managed to create a number of chances although they were not able to find a way past an in-form Daniel Barton.
With 10 minutes remaining in the half, Barker dribbled two defenders and finished emphatically past Garrett Priestley to double the lead. Herne Bay United switched off after this and less than a minute later Arran Bowyer fired home a free hit through a disintegrating defensive wall.
The rest of the first half was ebb and flow with chances at both ends and it was only a combination of good goal keeping and bad finishing that led to the score line not changing. It took a moment of brilliance with a minute left in the half to give Herne Bay United some breathing space as Neil Austin scored a smoothly executed flick up and volley around defender Phil McVey into the top corner of the goal.
This late goal boosted the confidence of Herne Bay United and they continued to enjoy the majority of possession and always looked in control of the game. Five minutes into the second half, Neil Austin robbed the ball on the half way line and showed great composure as he took it around the goal keeper to complete his hatrick and make the score line 4-1.
Not wanting to be outdone, Brendan Barker added two further goals to his tally thus completing his hatrick and making the game safe for Herne Bay United. However these goals did not demoralise Herne Bay United 2 as they continued to battle and Phil McVey was unlucky to have a goal ruled out for some holding as he won the ball.
Eventually the extra class and experience of Herne Bay United shone through as two more goals were added before the end. The first was scored by Neil Austin bringing his match total to four and in the last minute Matt Barton making his first appearance of the season, rounded off the goal scoring following a one-two with Karl Smith.
Although the Champions recorded two fine wins over the weekend there is still much work to do in training, especially in their finishing if the title is to be retained.

The team went into Saturday's match not wanting Letchworth to settle into any rhythm and this game plan was rewarded after just 35 seconds as the captain Simon Hosking scored a fine individual strike coming around the back of the goal and flicking it into the top corner of the net. Following this early strike United continued to press and enjoyed the majority of the play and after five minutes the team created space for Brendan Barker to dispatch a fine slap shot from out on the right hand side which doubled the lead.
For the rest of the first half, although having the majority of the ball, Herne Bay United were unable to maintain their high tempo. This lack of urgency coupled with some wayward finishing buoyed the Letchworth team and resulted in no more goals before half time. However Herne Bay United keeper, Dan Barton, had a big say in this by producing some fine saves from Letchworth counterattacks.
Manager, Phil McVey, impressed on the team the need to increase the speed at which the team were playing. For the second half Andrew Gregory, a summer signing from Sheffield, was introduced and this succeeded in increasing the pace of the Champion Team's play.
Seven minutes into the second half a third goal was added from the penalty spot by Simon Hosking after he had been brought down in the penalty area. This managed to settle any anxiety that was creeping in and Hosking completed his hatrick a couple of minutes later with a fine solo effort culminating in him taking it around the keeper and putting the ball into an empty net.
Following three years out of Roller Hockey, Dendy Hudson then took centre stage by scoring a quick fire hatrick to put the result in no doubt. His first strike was a fine half volley putting away a rebound following a good save from the Letchworth keeper. This goal gave United more confidence and his two remaining goals were the result of fine passing moves in which all of the team were involved.
Paul Nelson was introduced for his first team debut at half time and produced a string of fine saves. However he was finally beaten with seven minutes left by a low shot that crept in at the far post. The rest of the match saw Herne Bay United holding the ball and they managed to add a final goal in the final minute that was scored by Neil Austin following yet another slick passing move.
The final score reflected the dominance of the Herne Bay United team, although with more clinical finishing the score line could have been even more emphatic.
Team: D. Barton, P. Nelson (GKs) N.Austin (1), B.Barker (1), S.Hosking (3) capt, D.Hudson (3), C.Espejo, N.Espejo, K.Smith, A Gregory.

Herne Bay United traveled to Grimsby for their first League match of the season winning it without too much difficulty and by a convincing margin 14 - 6, compared to last season's result of 8 v 5.
Herne Bay United started the game fast pushing Grimsby from the whistle. This created numerous chances but it took 8 minutes to score their first goal which was the result of good team effort which Simon Hosking finished in the top right hand corner for his first goal of the season.
HBU continued creating chances, hitting the post and crossbar on more than one occasion. Brendan Barker scored his first of the game from the penalty spot. This opened up a run of goals with a team effort from Brendan and Neil Austin finishing sweetly and a further three goals from individual efforts from Simon and Brendan.
At this point HBU showed signs of easing up on Grimsby who promptly scored a long range slap shot in the far bottom corner against the unsighted Dan Barton. United went into the half time break with a 6 - 1 lead.
United continued to dominate a more closely contested second half as fatigue began to show in the six players available for this game.
Neil Austin was quick off the mark scoring in 42 seconds from the restart. Grimsby responded through Marc Waddingham, again United replied positively with 3 goals, two great team efforts and Simon Hosking finishing emphatically from the spot.
HBU began to show lapses of concentration and Grimsby's Marc Waddingham capitalized on these scoring twice, once from the spot.
Neil Austin burst into life again with a superb back hand in the far top corner with the keeper powerless to defend it. Marc again for Grimsby exploited a defensive error in the 12th minute to make the score 11 - 4.
HBU patiently built up momentum again which resulted in 3 more goals from Brendan Barker, one from the spot. Uni
