Following their extremely strong showing in the European Champions League, Herne Bay United Roller Hockey Club were pleased to present a signed team shirt to Barry Head of Crown Products in recognition of the company’s support and sponsorship which made their campaign possible. Speaking at the champagne reception hosted by the company, Barry Head said.

"We were delighted to be able to assist the team in their international efforts through our Crown Charitable Fund. The amateur team have acquitted themselves admirably against professional opposition throughout Europe and at the home games played in the Pier Pavilion. We hope that the financial support we have given has not only helped to strengthen the club and increase its profile locally but also to promote Herne Bay internationally. The sponsorship was part of Crown’s ongoing policy of providing support wherever possible for local organisations."
The Crown Charitable Fund is administered by the Kent Community Foundation who specialise in providing financial support to small community and voluntary groups. They have recently been selected to deliver two Grassroots schemes aimed at groups who focus on building a sense of community and improving quality of life, including the provision of grants up to £5,000.
Herne Bay United Player Manager Phil McVey added: "We wanted to thank Crown for all the help they have given us, the sponsorship funds they provided enabled us to enter the European Champions League last year, without them we couldn’t have done it. Entering the Champions League gave our club, and the sport the platform it needed to really move forward. Roller Hockey in the town has a bright future, both clubs in the town, (Herne Bay and Herne Bay United) have seen a influx of kids keen to play the game, Crown can be proud that they’ve played a major part in this process.
We have won the National Premier League and Cup this year, and we gained our first ever Champions League point with a draw against the Italians in Italy. We really want to build on last year’s success. We have entered into the Champions League again this year, and our first game is at home to top Spanish side Tenerife, to be played on 18 October at the Pier. This is a very exciting time to be involved in roller hockey, and I hope the people of Herne Bay come out to support us. Roller Hockey is a great spectator sport, and for anyone who hasn’t seen a top game, I can guarantee you will not be disappointed."

Herne Bay United's Veteran team played at and won the National Veterans Tournament in Herne Bay at the weekend. United's side was made up entirely of the players who won United's first premier league title 16 years ago.
United's first game was against Sheffield on Saturday afternoon. After a slow start United's superior team game began to tell, and they dominated the play creating numerous chances. Sheffield could not break down Utd's solid defence and the local side ran out comfortable winners 7-1.
An hour later, they faced Guernsey. Once again United's defence was nigh on impregnable. Some of United's players hadn’t been on skates for 16 years, and they were now finding their feet. Their passing was improving all the time, as was their finishing. Guernsey were frustrated throughout and a disciplined team performance gave United a crushing 9-1 victory.
Later that evening United took on a guest team made up of younger players from both local sides, Herne Bay and Herne Bay United. The players in the guest team all currently play in the Premier league. United however had experience on their side, and they defeated the young pretenders 4-1, with another display of perfect defending.
Sunday morning saw a clash of the top two veteran sides, Herne Bay v Herne Bay United. A thoroughly enjoyable game to watch, both sides played good possession hockey, although the Bay couldn't break down United's defence. The United side's attacking players had now blown away the cobwebs, and were creating chance after chance. United dominated from the opening whistle to the end, and ran out 5-0 victors.
United now had to face their local rivals again in the final. This match was much closer than the earlier encounter, and it took United well into the second half before they had put the game out of the Bay's reach. They were hoping to keep another clean sheet but the Bay managed to score a consolation goal in the last minute of the game to make the final score 5-1.
The final standings were: 1st Herne Bay United, 2nd Herne Bay, 3rd Sheffield, 4th Guernsey.
HBU veteran Clive Bassom said after the final: "We had a brilliant time. It was great to see my old team mates again. We are all shattered now, but it was worth the pain. Our defensive performances over the whole weekend were excellent, and the lads up front showed why they were the best strikers in the country for well over a decade. We can't wait to defend the trophy next year. On behalf of the side we'd like to thank the Herne Bay club; they organised the tournament and it was a great success."
Manager Terry Barton added: "It was like we'd never been away. The team defended excellently throughout the whole tournament. This was something we always tried to do when we played all those years ago. It gave us the platform and the confidence to attack as a team. Every player scored, which speaks volumes. It was a very nice experience to manage the lads again, and we’re all looking forward to competing again next year. It was good to see a lot of the youngsters in the club watching this weekend. They can learn a lot from how this side play, both defending and attacking."

Herne Bay United's senior squad faced Middlesbrough in their final with it having all the makings of being a Cup classic, United coming off a strong finish to the English Premier League and Middlesbrough having a run of ten games undefeated.
Middlesbrough took the initiative with the first goal through Mike Ableson and United were struggling to get used to the floor and had to adjust the way they played. After a couple of substitutions Simon Hosking finally got the equalizer just before the half time break putting both teams on level terms for the second half.
Both teams came out strong but neither side could find the final step needed to break the deadlock with chances falling to both teams; United's Neil Austin had to leave the rink to seek medical attention after receiving a cut to the head. After the short interval while the rink was being cleaned up, United's captain Hosking scored his second 10 minutes from time to put United in front. The game began to look like United had done enough but in the final 2 minutes a United defensive error gave Middlesbrough the chance they needed to put them back on level terms through Marc Rutland.
United had chances in the final minute but could not capitalize on them and the final whistle went with both teams level on 2 - 2 meaning there would be two halves of 5 minutes extra time with the golden goal rule and if the game could still not be decided it would be penalties. United won the toss and opted to take the centre. United's Brendan Barker took the centre and passed the ball unexpectedly to a Middlesbrough player who fumbled the ball in shock, allowing Barker to steal it back immediately and score all within 5 seconds of the whistle, giving United the 3 - 2 win on the golden goal rule. United celebrated while the Middlesbrough team stood in disbelief.
Herne Bay United's Player Manager Phil McVey added "I'm absolutely delighted with the win, and more importantly the way in which we won it. I asked Brendan to try the move straight from the centre, and he did it perfectly. I'm thrilled for him, the team, and everyone at the club who supports us. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going into next season. It has been a long and difficult season for us this year, but we've managed to come out on top again. The only reason we manage to stay at the top is by a lot of hard work, dedication and team spirit. We gained our first ever European Champions League point this season against the Italians, and we've won both domestic competitions. We don't want to rest on our laurels, myself and the players will come back next season, eager to learn and improve. Hopefully the youngsters in our club will gain inspiration from us. We are showing them what can be achieved if you put your all into it. Dedication, Commitment plus Hard Work can take you a long way, in whatever you are doing, whether it be work or your sport. Finally I would like to thank my players. They have listened, and worked hard all season. They should all be very proud of what they have accomplished. I know I am very proud of them."
United will finish the season with the Mix and Match and Club Awards event on Friday the 11th July from 5. 30pm at the Pier, and the Club Party on the 12th.
Herne Bay United's President, Ron Barker, added at the weekend he would like to thank all the local supporters from Herne Bay and the local area for all the support they have given this season and hopes to see them all for the 2008/2009 season with preparation beginning at the end of August.
Team: Dan Barton, Phil McVey (Manager), Karl Smith, Sam Jackson, Simon Hosking(Cap)(2), Neil Austin, Dendy Hudson, Brendan Barker (1), Paul Nelson and Matt Barton.

Herne Bay United under 11's Adders team played against Kings Lynn in the final of the National Cup at Bisley on Saturday. The team had the majority of possession throughout the game and continuously took their chances to score. However, although the majority of shots were on target the Kings Lynn goalkeeper was equal to everything United could send his way. The teams remained in deadlock until halfway through the first half when Alex Mount opened the United scoring. Kings Lynn then scored three goals against the run of play before Lewis Greenwood's shot bounced in off the post to leave United 2 - 3 down at half time. Again the second half was played with United in control but still unable to make the most of their numerous chances. Kings Lynn scored two quick goals before Michael Gregory and Greenwood added to United's tally. The last five minutes saw United frantic to score the equaliser and although they remained strong in defence it was not to be and they were denied the trophy by one goal. Final score Kings Lynn 5 - 4 Herne Bay United and the team received silver medals for their efforts. It caps a successful year for the team who last week took the Southern Counties League and also won the inter-regional tournament representing Southern Counties. Alex Mount was also awarded the NRHA Under 11 Player of the Year award for the second successive year.

The Under 13 team were also in action at the cup finals and also faced Kings Lynn for their match. Kings Lynn scored an early goal with just 20 seconds gone but the teams then settled to a period of even possession. However, Kings Lynn began to take control and only Eddie Mount's goalkeeping skills kept the deficit to one. As the half drew to a close Kings Lynn upped their game and scored five goals in the last five minutes to leave United 6 - 0 down at the break. The second half was a much more even affair with both sides having plenty of chances to score. Alex Mount claimed one for United five minutes into the half and as the game ran from end to end there were opportunites for all members of the team to add more. However, the only other goal was scored by Kings Lynn two minutes from the end leaving United the wrong end of a 1 - 7 scoreline. Along with their silver National Cup runners-up medals the Under 13 team have also won the Southern Counties league, been runners up in the Eastern Counties league, and, as part of the Southern Counties team, come runners up in the inter-regional tournament.

The final Southern Counties league tournament of the season took place on Sunday with teams from Herne Bay United and Herne Bay taking part.
The first game was between HBU Adders and Herne Bay. Adders secured most of the possession although Herne Bay were able to take advantage of lapses in defence to attack the Adders goal. First half Adders strikes by Michael Gregory, Sam Whiffen, Kier Maeers and Connor Botting were added to in the second half by a hat-trick for Maeers and one more for Gregory. Herne Bay were unable to score in return and the match ended Adders 8 - 0 Herne Bay.
The second game pitted Adders against club rivals Cobras. Cobras took an early lead through Luke Latham and Alice Osborne-Luck. Opportunites fell to both sides during this closely contested match. Two goals each by Whiffen and Maeers pulled Adders back into the game but a Tom Barton hat-trick gave Cobras a 5 - 4 half time lead. Whiffen scored just after the restart to level the scores and it remained even through a long period of play where Cobras seem to have the upper hand but were unable to make anything count. It was left to the final minute for Gregory to score twice and give the Adders a 7 - 5 win from a very entertaining match.
The final game saw HBU Cobras playing Herne Bay. The teams were closely matched throughout although Herne Bay found it hard to get through the Cobras defence. Barton placed a penalty shot into the top left corner of the goal and also scored a second goal. The Cobras' final goal was a spectacular effort from Luca Commentucci. Herne Bay could only score one in reply giving a final score of Cobras 3 - 1 Herne Bay.
HBU Adders are the league winners with HBU Cobras in second and Herne Bay third. Also in the league were Plymouth and a select team from Eastern Counties.
Herne Bay United have three teams competing in the NRHA National Cup Finals at Bisley on Saturday. The Under 11s face Kings Lynn, the Under 13s also play Kings Lynn, while the senior cup will be contested between Herne Bay United and Middlesbrough.
Adders: Charley Bassom, Charlie Botting, Connor Botting, Michael Gregory, Kier Maeers, Callum Upton, Sam Whiffen

Herne Bay United clinched the Premier League title from arch rival Bury in their final league game of the season. HBU went into the game 2 points behind Bury, knowing they had to win to retain their title. A crowd of close to 400 witnessed an absolutely absorbing display of roller hockey, played by two teams at the top of their game.
HBU started the game strongly and controlled the game for the first five minutes, although they could not break down Bury's tight defence. Then with 18 minutes left in the half, HBU's Brendan Barker beat a player and scored with a slapshot, only to see the goal disallowed for a block by one of his teammates on an opponent. The let off seemed to kick start Bury, who then began to enjoy a few attacks of their own. For the next ten minutes the game ebbed and flowed, and it was Bury, who were creating the better chances as they were happy to sit back in tight defence, then hit United on the counter attack. The tactic appeared to be working, but HBU keeper Dan Barton was having a superb game, and was equal to anything Bury could throw at him. The last ten minutes of the half saw United get on top again as the Bury players tired. With seven minutes remaining the HBU captain was fouled in the area and a penalty was awarded. He stepped up to take the penalty, but the Bury keeper made a fine save to keep the game goalless. Both teams were creating chances, and neither side seemed to be able to dominate the game for more than a few minutes at a time. The half ended 0-0.
The second half began as the first, with HBU pressing Bury in defence, and Bury keeping their defence tight. Slowly United started stepping up the pace, and gradually they began to create more chances; it was the Bury keeper's turn to keep his side in it with a string of fine saves. Then with 13 minutes remaining in the half United had a free hit just outside the box. Karl Smith touched the ball to Hosking, who fired an unstoppable slapshot into the top corner of the Bury net to put United 1-0 up. Bury were not going to roll over though, and they upped their game again. United's defence was now being tested time and time again; United keeper Barton was forced to pull off some great saves to keep Bury out. United weathered the storm and tried to settle the game down and get their passing game going. Their experience showed as they began to keep the ball, making simple early passes to teammates. They were rewarded when after about a dozen passes the ball ended up on Hosking's stick, he used the defender to unsight the Bury keeper, and he flicked the ball into the top corner of the net with the Bury keeper sitting motionless. This made it 2-0 to the reigning champions with eight minutes remaining.
Bury would not give in, and they came again at United. Now though, they had to take chances in defence and pressure the United players. This left space at the back, and United started to play more in and around the Bury penalty area. It was Bury though, who had the next opportunity as United gave away a penalty. Darren Willis stepped up for Bury but Barton made another fine save to deny him. United were now happy to draw the Bury players out, so they could exploit the space in behind, Bury had no option but to press out on United as time was running out. United capitalised on this as with three minutes remaining Barker intercepted a pass, skated the length of the rink before faking a slapsot, and squaring the ball to Hosking, who had a simple tap in to make it 3-0. There were no more goals as United shut up shop for the last few minutes.
After the game HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "We are all delighted; the whole team played excellently tonight, and we deserved to win, and we deserve to be champions. Bury are a very good side, and they pushed us all the way. That's probably the hardest game I have played in this country. We showed why we are number one, it makes all the hard work worthwhile, and I'm thrilled to score a hat-trick tonight. We were all under extreme pressure to win."
Player Manager Phil McVey added: "That was a great result for us. The whole team raised their game, and we were worthy winners. Take nothing away from Bury, they pushed us all the way. The lads showed a great deal of character, none more so than our captain Simon Hosking, who in my opinion played the perfect game, he led the team from start to finish, and scored all 3 goals, a true captains performance in every sense. The league is getting harder and harder to win, and I want to thank all the players for all their hard work and commitment throughout the season. We have one trophy, but we want to make it two. We have the national cup final against Middlesbrough in four weeks time, and we want to win that as well. Winning the league means we are back in the European Champions league next season. We gained our first ever point in it this season, and we will be looking for our first ever win in that competition next year. It's an exciting time at the club at the moment, and it's important we keep the momentum going. I also have to thank the sponsors and our supporters, who have been there for us all year, the title is for them as well."

The opening match of the tournament was HBU v Ely; after a slow start in which Ely had lots of shots at goal, but some good saves by Joe kept Ely at bay. HBU then found their rhythm and started to open up the scoring. Alex (3), Lewis and Ashley (2); final score HBU 7 - 1 Ely.
HBU's second match was arguably the most important of the day, due to a scheduling problem earlier in the season this was being played for double points to even up the schedule. This was a very tough match against a very strong team, HBU fought well with Eddie in goal and the defence was kept tight by all the boys; some good offensive and defensive play, allowed the U13's to take the lead and during the second half pull away from a frustrated Peterborough. Goals from Ashley (3), Harry, Alex, final score HBU 5 - 2 Peterborough.
The final match was against the top team in the U13 Div1 league, Kings Lynn. HBU have struggled against a much older and larger team, however on this occasion the match was kept very close, with goals from Ashley (2), Harry and Alex - final score HBU 4 - 6 Kings Lynn.

HBU Under 15's played in a Sechra Tournament held at the Pier on Sunday. They were missing two of their main squad players, who were both away playing for the England ladies team, and had to enlist the assistance of three Under 13 players.
Their first game against Herne Bay was a fast, energetic and closely fought game, with HBU winning this game 5 goals to 4, with HBU using all their practiced moves and defensive tactics to the full, to achieve their aim, although all the players, younger and older, participated.
The second game was against Plymouth and HBU set out believing that they would overcome them quite easily. This proved to be a mistake, with the half time score HBU 3 - 1 Plymouth. The Manager reminded his players of what they train for and encouraged them to enter the second half playing as a team with passing and movement, and they put this into effect to the letter. However within two minutes of the half starting the score was 3 goals apiece, but then HBU regrouped and applied more energy and pressure, finishing the game winners at 11 goals to 3.
The last game was against East Grinstead. HBU completely outplayed their opponents, at half time they were 6 - 1 ahead and finished the game at 15 goals to 2. All the players got on the score sheet, even Eddie Mount the Under 13's goal keeper who on this occasion played out on the rink, Ashley Barton and Harry Rowbotham, the two other Under 13 players, also playing well and getting on the score sheet. Kelly Fox and Robbie Lowe, the two goal keepers, played very well as did the remaining three main Under 15 players, Alfie Sheppard, Adam McVey and Sam Rowbotham.

HBU CSL fully realised that Saturday nights National Cup Qualifier Semi Final game against Middlesbrough was going to be one of their hardest games of the season, CSL having won one and lost one against Middlesbrough in the Premier League.
The game commenced, as everyone anticipated it would, at a fast pace, but with CSL appearing quite pensive and possibly nervous. Middlesbrough kept CSL pinned back in their half for a while, but with CSL using their well practised restricted man to man defensive mode. Unfortunately despite all CSL's counter attacks on Middlesbrough's goal, of which there were several, CSL went into half time two goals down.
At half time there was a healthy discussion, with the Manager suggesting to the players that they increase the pace of the game and play, as they are able, in a cohesive and structured team manner.
The second half began in a similar manner, but CSL were beginning to get into their stride, but after seven minutes play Middlesbrough scored two further goals. However CSL replied with a searing slapshot from Arran Bowyer which spurred the team on to recover their composure. Another seven minutes elapsed and Middlesbrough struck again with two more goals in quick succession. This seemed to fire CSL, with them realising that they must make an all out effort to score again to stay in the game. CSL's Joe King scored two excellent goals within a one minute period. The score was now CSL 3 - 6 Middlesbrough. CSL were now working hard for another goal but despite the players' considerable efforts and because they were having to continuously attack, leaving their defence weakened, Middlesbrough scored the final goal of the game with 41 seconds left on the clock.
It was an entertaining and energetic game for spectators and players alike. CSL did not allow Middlesbrough to rest and after the game Middlesbrough's Captain, John Jones, when speaking to CSL's Captain Joe Fidock, said that Middlesbrough had become a little unsettled when CSL responded with the two quick goals in the second half and knew that CSL could press them hard enough to even the score, if not draw ahead. Middlesbrough gave a great sigh of relief when the final whistle blew. Unfortunately the HBU dream of having two teams in the National Cup Final evaporated, but Middlesbrough go forward as worthy adversaries.

Under 11's teams from both Herne Bay United and Herne Bay Roller Hockey clubs played some friendly matches on Sunday. The first match was between HBU Cobras and HBU Adders. Both teams had shots on goals throughout the game as play constantly swapped possession between the two sides. A Max Osborne hat-trick and one from Luke Latham were countered by Sam Whiffen, Kier Maeers and Charlie Botting to give the Cobras a 4 - 3 half time lead. The second half was as equally matched as the first with Osborne adding two more to the Cobras' tally, Botting doing likewise for the Adders and Whiffen scoring his second to leave the match a hard fought 6 - 6 draw.
The second game saw the Adders playing Herne Bay. Adders demonstrated good team work throughout the game, moving the ball around the rink well. However, despite having the majority of possession they were unable to break Herne Bay's defence until an own goal gave Adders the lead. Sam Whiffen scored two only countered by one Bay goal to give the Adders a 1 - 3 half time lead. The second half was again a display of United's passing and possession dominance with Bay only able to break through occassionally. A hat-trick from Kier Maeers and one for Charlie Botting with one in reply for Herne Bay gave the Adders a 2 - 7 victory.
The final game saw HBU Cobras taking on Herne Bay. Cobras played very strong in defence not allowing Herne Bay many opportunities to score. First half goals from Luke Latham and Max Osborne with one from Herne Bay gave Cobras a 2 - 1 lead. Several Cobra shots hit the posts during the second half but they were able to extend their lead through the completion of Osborne's hat-trick and one from Adam Bowron. Herne Bay could only find one more in reply so Cobras were 5 - 2 winners.

Herne Bay United's two Premier League teams met on Wednesday night, in a game HBU had to win to have any chance of winning the National Championship this season. Both teams were at full strength but it was HBU who settled the quickest, three minutes in a well worked move resulted in Neil Austin scoring to make it 1 - 0. The goal galvanised the CSL defence, and this gave them the platform to get themselves into the game, although HBU dominated possession CSL began to make chances of their own. With 16 minutes remaining in the half Arran Bowyer equalised with a well taken slapshot to make it 1 - 1. Both teams were working hard, and HBU continued to dominate but the CSL defence held firm, then with 10 minutes remaining in the half Austin scored his second to put HBU 2 - 1 ahead. This opened the flood gates and in the last five minutes of the half HBU scored four more goals to put them 6 - 1 up at half time.
The second half was a more even encounter, CSL created a few chances, as did the reigning champions, but both goal keepers were in good form and neither side could find the back of the net. Then with 16 minutes left, Steve Clarke pulled one back for CSL to make it 6 - 2. Any thoughts they had of staging a comeback disappeared a minute later when Player Manager Phil McVey scored to make it 7 - 2. Sam Jackson finished the scoring with eight minutes remaining to make it 8 - 2. The final minutes saw HBU happy to play possession knowing the victory was assured.
The win leaves HBU knowing that if they win their remaining 3 league games of the season they will retain the title, whilst HBU CSL need a point from their remaining matches to guarantee Premier League hockey next season.
Following the game CSL captain Joe Fidock said: "Whilst we are never happy when we lose, we can take a lot of positives out of this match, the first team are playing very well at the moment, and apart from the last five minutes of the first half we held our own. If we can take this form into our next match I'm confident we can get the points that assure our Premier League status for next season".
HBU Player Manager Phil McVey added: "CSL gave us a good game tonight, we knew it wouldn't be easy. I was pleased with our overall performance, they made it difficult for us, but we kept passing the ball and maintained our discipline in attack. There are now only three matches between us and the title, Middlesbrough beating Bury has given us a second chance and we are determined to make the most of it. I'm pleased with the form and style of hockey both of our teams are playing. It looks as though CSL will retain their Premier League status, and we are both in the semi-finals of the National Cup. We could be looking at the possibility of an all HBU final. This would make history as no club as ever managed to get two teams into a National Final."
Both sides play their next Premier League matches at the Pier on Saturday 24th May; HBU take on relegation threatened Halifax, immediately following that match HBU CSL take on relegated Sheffield.

Herne Bay United played Sheffield in the Premier League on Saturday evening with a late start of 9pm. United go into the remaining five games of the League with the added pressure of not being able to afford any slip ups. The Roller Hockey Premier League mirrors that of Football with Bury and United clear at the top but the League could go all the way to the last game providing United win all their remaining games with Bury only having just one game and that versus United on 7th June at the Pier.
United went about their task against Sheffield and even with the pressure produced one of their best performances of the season. United opened the scoring after five minutes with a superbly finished team goal by Dendy Hudson. United moved the ball around with great pace and purpose, scoring nine before the half time break and Paul Nelson showing just why he was in the starting five, not conceding a goal.
Again United came at Sheffield not giving them any space, it took United just 12 seconds to get on the scoresheet from the start of the second half with another team goal to give Karl Smith his only goal of the game. With United on this form Sheffield could find no reply to the onslaught with the final score 21 - 3 with Matt Barton, Dendy Hudson, Brendan Barker and Neil Austin all scoring a hat-trick or more; with United player manager Phil McVey being the only United out player not to get on the score sheet.
Manger McVey said after the game; "I really enjoyed today's performance, we played exceptional hockey at times, better than I have seen us do all season. We have four league games remaining, each as important as the other, so there is no room for complacency. This is a good start to the home run, let's make it continue."
United play HBU CSL on Wednesday 14th May 2008 starting at 9pm at the Pier Pavilion. This will see United's Captain Simon Hosking return from his four match ban with the manager reporting Simon is eager to get back out there for United and has been showing good form at recent training sessions.

Players from Herne Bay United and Herne Bay Roller Hockey clubs represented Southern Counties at the Inter-Regional Tournaments held at Peterborough over the Bank Holiday weekend.
The Under 11 team faced a tough first match against Eastern Counties 1. The team had secured a 5 - 3 first half lead but their opponents fought back and snatched an equaliser with 10 seconds remaining on the clock. Final score 5 - 5. Their second game against Northern Counties was equally tense with the Southern County team 6 - 2 down at half time. However, a determined fightback and four goals in the last four minutes earned them a 9 - 8 victory. The final game was against Eastern Counties 2. It was the easiest of the three and the team soon built up a commanding 7 - 0 half time lead. The goals continued in the second half and the final score was 13 - 1. Eastern Counties 1 and Southern Counties finished the tournament level on points and as the match between them was a draw it went to goal difference to decide the title. Thanks to their 12 goal difference in the final game Southern Counties claimed the title by one goal.

The Under 13s, playing as Southern Counties 2, faced a tough first game against Eastern Counties 1. The team struggled against a much larger side losing 9 - 2. Their second game was against Northern Counties. It proved to be a tight, end-to-end affair between two equally matched opponents, with Southern Counties 2 emerging as 2 - 1 winners. The next opponents were Southern Counties 1 and it proved to be the easiest game in the tournament. The team were able to produce a number of good team goals and won the match 6 - 1. Their final game against Eastern Counties 2 also showed good team work and earned their highest number of goals. Southern Counties 2 were 8 - 3 winners. With three matches won and one lost Southern Counties 2 finished as runners-up in the under 13 tournament.

HBU made the trip to Manchester for the National Roller Hockey Premier League on Sunday. United were keen to ensure that they got back some form and improved on recent performances after two disappointing results of late. They were desperate to get the 3 points and knew that Manchester away was going to be a tough fixture, especially without Simon Hosking due to suspension and Chris Espejo through injury.
The toll of the long journey did not show with HBU settling quickly with early possession play. This was soon capitalised on with a quick first time finish across the keeper by Sam Jackson to round off a well worked team move. With Manchester being put under so much pressure the home side were lucky to have a deflected shot that crept under Dan Barton's near post.
The equaliser, against the run of play, did not faze United as they stepped up a gear and created the space in Manchester's defence for Sam Jackson to add a second and a third for United.
Confusion then came as the referee made two howling errors and gave two blue cards to both Sam Jackson and Karl Smith in a matter of minutes. Both of which were for tackles that a yellow card would have still been considered harsh. However, United still did not get put off their stride and continued the work rate allowing the exposure of the weak points in Manchester's marking. Sleek team moves were finished off by two goals for Dendy Hudson, two for Brendan Barker and one for Neil Austin. Barker then scored a show piece goal by driving into the heart of Manchester's penalty area and flicking the ball from round his back which flashed past the keeper's shoulder to take United's total to 9. United then eased off the pressure and Manchester scored two goals in the last two minutes of the half making it 9 - 3 at the break.
The second half was a continuation of the first with United dominating the possession, controlling the pace of the game and building up the play to create attacks on Manchester's defence. However, Manchester too altered their tactics and were much more solid in defence and did not allow United's quick passing to stretch and open them up as it had in the first half. After 12 minutes of the second half the breakthrough came with Matt Barton clinically finishing off team moves with two unstoppable top corner finishes.
Despite United's attacks Manchester kept their defensive focus with their occasional counter attack and long shots being confidently stopped by Dan Barton. Brendan Barker then went on a trademark individual run down the right and cut in to put a well hit back handed shot passed the tiring Manchester keeper. Manchester completed the scoring with a slap shot that just beat an unsighted Dan Barton into the roof of the net making the final score 12 - 4 to United.
After the game Player manager Phil McVey commented: "This was a pleasing improvement on recent performances. We moved the ball around well and created a lot of chances. We knew this was going to be a tough game and are delighted to bounce back and get the 3 points."

On the journey home the United team were given the results of the other Premier league games and significantly Middlesbrough had beaten Bury 10 - 3. This puts United with a game in hand just two points behind Bury and rekindles hopes that they can still win the Premier league title for the 14th time.

Herne Bay United took on Middlesbrough on Saturday night, knowing they needed a victory to keep the pressure on league leaders Bury. United started the stronger side and with five minutes gone Brendan Barker squared the ball for Dendy Hudson, who finished well to put United 1 - 0 ahead. United continued to push their opponents, and five minutes later Karl Smith received the ball on the edge of Middlesbrough's penalty area, turned and flicked the ball high into the net to make it 2 - 0. The game settled down and Middlesbrough began to have a few chances of their own, United's defence however was equal to them and both teams were now creating chances. United, without playing at their best were comfortable and with three minutes left in the half Phil McVey beat Middlesbrough defender on the halfway line, and another on the edge of the box before crossing the ball for Nicky Barton, who struck the ball first time in off the post to make it 3 - 0. A minute later Barton scored again after some good work from Barker to make it 4 - 0. United were dominating now and they went further ahead when McVey played a defence splitting pass to Barker, who was then brought down by the keeper. Barker scored the resulting penalty to make it 5 - 0 with 23 seconds left in the half. United pushed straight from the restart, Barker stole the ball and dribbled the keeper to make it 6 - 0 at half-time.
The second half can only be described as a shambles from the reigning champions, it looked as though they thought the game was won. Two minutes in Middlesbrough scored their first through Owen Stewart, his long range effort looping past United keeper Paul Nelson to make it 6 - 1. Whereas in the first half United's defence were pushing out on their opponents, now they were defending too deep allowing Middlesbrough to play. This cost them as Middlesbrough captain John Jones scored 3 within a five minute period to make the score 6 - 4. Middlesbrough now had their tails up, as they began to believe they could win the game. United had stopped playing as a team, and their defence was gifting chances to their opponents. With 11 minutes remaining Graeme Stewart scored after a goal mouth scramble to make it 6 - 5, and then again a minute later to make it 6 - 6.
Finally United started playing again and Nick Barton crossed the ball for McVey (the refs awarded it to Barker!) to put the home side back in front with 7 minutes remaining. The game had developed into an up and down game with both teams creating chances. With three minutes left Marc Rutland scored with a excellent finish into the top corner to bring Middlesbrough back on level terms at 7 - 7. Then in the last two minutes McVey was brought down in the area and United were awarded a penalty. Barker took it, but was denied by a fine save from Ian Smith in the Borough goal. Both teams had chances to win it, McVey missed a sitter in the last 20 seconds of the match to win for the home side, but the game ended 7 - 7.
After the game United Player Manager Phil McVey said: "I think we should register ourselves as a charity, we gave away the victory. Credit to Middlesbrough, they never gave up and played as well as I have seen them play. We were comfortable in the first half without ever playing well, but our second half performance was one of the worst I have ever seen from this side. We were missing our captain Simon Hosking and another key player Sam Jackson, due to suspensions, but that is no excuse. No Herne Bay United side should give away a 6 goal lead like that. The game was ours to win; Middlesbrough must have thought it was Christmas the way we gifted them chance after chance. We now need to rely on Bury slipping up against someone if we are to retain the title. Ultimately the buck stops with me, as manager, and I'm going to have to analyse the changes I made during the game to ensure this never happens again."

A group of Herne Bay United's younger players travelled to St Omer on Easter Saturday to take part in a training session and to play some friendly matches.
The Under 13's matches were very competitive. The first game saw plenty of end to end play with United working hard in defence. It was goal-less until four minutes from the end of the first half when St Omer scored four goals in quick succession to give them a good half time lead. The second half saw United gaining more possession but they were unable to stop St Omer scoring three more goals to finish 7 - 0 winners.
The second game was again full of action from start to finish. St Omer opened the scoring just 8 seconds into the game but United replied three times through Ashley Barton and Alex Mount (2) in the next two minutes. St Omer narrowed the gap again but strike each for Harry Rowbotham and Lewis Greenwood extended United's half time lead to 5 - 3. HBU scored again at the beginning of the second half through Charlie Botting but were then forced into defensive play as St Omer pushed to get back into the game. The French team scored three more times but United clung on to a narrow 6 - 5 victory. Exceptional goalkeeping by Eddie Mount secured their win as he saved three penalties during the match and made numerous other good saves.
The Under 11's teams played a short 10-minute game with goals by Connor Botting (2), Tom Barton and Alice Osborne-Luck giving them a 4 - 2 win. They then split into teams of half English/half French players to play another short game. Tom Barton and David Martindale both scored to give the Bibs team a 2 - 1 win over the Non Bibs team.
Finally, playing in their proper teams again, the under 11's played a full-length game. St Omer had more of the play scoring four times in the first half to United's two from Charley Bassom and Tom Barton, although Barton saw another shot rebound from the post. St Omer scored early in the second half but United replied quickly with another goal for Barton and one for Luca Commentucci. However, they were unable to stop St Omer from scoring another three goals to give a final score of St Omer 8 - 4 HBU.

Herne Bay United travelled to Prato, Italy, last weekend for the final game of the European League. United had strong hopes for this game after only just losing to the Italians 2 - 3 at home. United started strong and adapted to the larger than normal rink being six metres longer and 4 metres wider than the Pier, lending itself to the players skating strengths. It wasn't long before the chances started to come with Brendan Barker putting United in front just 10 minutes into the game. The Italians came straight back with a reply to level the scores. United again had the run of play keeping the Italians in their own half with some very well structured possession play, then came United's second goal. This time the Italians weren't so quick to reply with United holding strong, however the Italians got a lucky break when they equalized in the dying seconds of the half. Halftime score 2 - 2.
After the break United faltered with a lapse allowing the Italians to take the lead for the first time in the game, United picked themselves up and showed their bounce back ability by going at the Italians, chances falling to all of the Herne Bay United players and eventually Simon Hosking sending the ball home into the top corner with an unstoppable slap shot, United were back on level terms.
Opportunities were falling to both teams, Sam Jackson earned United two penalties which we failed to capitalize on under the pressure and the Italians also had chances from the spot but United's keepers kept them out, however after an error from United's Barker, Bernadini was allowed enough space and he put the Italians back in front. With just 7 minutes left on the clock, United weren't going to take this lying down and determined not to be pipped by the Italians for a second time, they pulled together and pressed. Chances were falling to United and the intensity of the game was showing with strong tackles coming from the players of both teams with United's Simon Hosking falling foul to a second yellow card and being sent to the sin bin for the final minutes of the game.
Barker finally equalized with two minutes left to spare. The game was end to end both teams going for the win and only the Keepers keeping both teams level, truly an outstanding game from both teams and United have taken a step up after achieving their first point in the European League against a team that trains every day of the week with players earning around £15,000-£20,000 a year.
United's 'keeper Paul Nelson really shone with his first away European game for United and showed he is a reliable strength to be placed at the back of United. Not one of United's players could be faulted on their performance in this game and the pleasure was evident as Coach/player Phil McVey added: "This result is a huge achievement for the club. It is the first time in the history of the Champion's League that an English club has won a point. The result will send shockwaves through European hockey, and once again it has put the town of Herne Bay back on the lips of teams all across Europe. It also shows the huge strides HBU have made. It was for us, a massive achievement just to be able to enter the competition as we had to raise £12,000. We managed to do this with the help of our sponsors: Crown Kitchens, ICOM, ID hairdressers,The Lions and Rotary to name but a few. As a result, both clubs in the town have seen an influx of kids wanting to play the game, and it's proof that all of our hard work is worth it. I'm extremely proud of the effort put in by all the players, and all the members who have helped behind the scenes. We now need to build on this and next season we want to enter the competition again. And next time we will be looking for at least one victory. To draw with a Professional team, who train every day, when we train once a week is special. Hopefully this will maintain the momentum we have created. We had nearly 2000 spectators watch us over the 3 home games, and attendance figures have been up on for our domestic games as well. Roller Hockey is on the up in the town, and next year roller hockey will have been played on the Pier Pavilion for 100 years. We need to start working towards this now. The Team needs new sponsors next year, and we have 4 panels on the shirts available, so if there are any companies interested in sponsoring us, you can contact our club through our website "www.hernebayunited.com" or alternatively myself or Brendan Barker on pdmcvy@aol.com or dr_bren@yahoo.co.uk.
FC Porto also failed to make the Final 4 losing to Spanish side CP Vic 4 - 0.
Herne Bay United: Daniel Barton (GK), Phil McVey, Karl Smith, Matt Barton, Sam Jackson, Simon Hosking(1), Neil Austin, Dendy Hudson, Brendan Barker(3) and Paul Nelson (GK)
Comment by Ron Barker, HBU President.
"It was a bit daunting when we arrived at Prato's rink as it is in an air dome and it looked very large. However, we found it excellent to skate on and it presented the space for all of our team to play an equal part in delivering this performance. In England, sports centres are far too small, play gets tangled up and players don't really get the chance to make skating count. This was a rare opportunity to be able to enjoy roller hockey as it is meant to be and it was a good match for the spectators. Congratulations and thanks to the Prato club for their arrangements and hospitality and we are delighted to end our European League participation with a landmark achievement for the Club and for Roller Hockey in England."

HBU Under 20's Team played in the Junior National Cup Qualifier game at the Pier on Thursday evening against Herne Bay. HBU were lacklustre and far from being on form, although there were moments of team work but because of poor defending and poor play, allowed Herne Bay to go 3 - 1 ahead in the first half.
During the half time break the Manager firmly discussed their form of play and strongly suggested that they should play their structured hockey, as rehearsed in training, and this they did for the first five minutes of the second half, which resulted in a goal from Liam Holland, unfortunately they then reverted to their lack lustre performance seen during the first half, and despite another talk during the time out, which appeared not to encourage them, play continued in the same manner. Although to be fair to the players there were moments of good team hockey but these periods were short lived. A disappointing performance from a team who we all know are capable of playing much better hockey. The final score Herne Bay 4 - 2 HBU.

HBU took part in an Eastern counties Under 17's tournament on Saturday 8th March. The team travelled to Soham on Saturday morning, with only two Schoolboy outplayers with the remainder of the team made up using the U15 players.
As this was the first time this group had played together, it took them the first game to settle down to playing as a team. The result was that Bury won this game quite convincingly (9 - 1). However the second game was against Cambridge, and the team started to gel and played in a more spirited manner, losing by only two goals (8 - 6). The final game was against Peterborough, who had earlier in the day beaten Bury. But the Coach/Manager told the players that they could win the game, despite the odds, by playing good passing hockey, and that all players must skate faster off the ball to get into good positions. And this they did, to great effect, and managed through their good team play and determination to win this game HBU 5 - Peterborough 3.
There was good team play and effort from all players and although suffering two losses with only one win, the Coach/Manager and the Team were happy with their performance.

HBU CSL then had to travel to Manchester on Sunday morning for the return leg of their Premier League fixture. CSL had defeated Manchester at the Pier last month and were expecting to meet Manchester's full team and a robust response, we were not disappointed. However CSL could only travel with six out players, and one goal keeper, again an under strength team, due to injury and work commitments. The venue was small, in comparison to CSL's home venue, the Pier, and not well suited to CSL's style or method of play. However we did begin slowly, with CSL conceding three goals within the first four minutes and a further goal after 12 minutes. CSL then found their form and began playing team roller hockey, with Joe King scoring two quick goals, and CSL went into half time 2 goals to Manchester's 4.
The second half was a more equal game with Manchester scoring a further two goals with two in reply from CSL's Liam Holland. The final score was Manchester 6 - HBU CSL 4.
The Manager congratulated the team, and said he was very pleased with their performance. They are a young evolving team who performed well on the day, and although mistakes were made, they will learn from these. Great potential.

On Saturday evening HBU CSL met Herne Bay at the Pier in the second leg of the Premier League local derby. The team however were without several senior players due to injury, and without a fully fit (recovering from a broken finger) Captain, Joe Fidock, who only played for five minutes.

It was an exciting physical game with the scoring opened by Herne Bay after seven minutes. CSL's Paul McVey responded quickly, receiving a hard accurate pass from Charlie Pughe, by putting the ball in the back of the net and equalising the score. The team then settled down and increased the score, with two quick goals, scored from searing slapshots by Liam Holland and a fourth goal from Myles Tichband, to take CSL ahead 4 - 1 at half time.
The second half continued in the same fashion, with Joe King scoring within the first three minutes. Herne Bay were then assisted, after 12 minutes, with an own goal being added to their tally. This seemed to spur Herne Bay on and they scored two more goals in quick succession. However CSL's Liam Holland scored the final goal of the evening with seven minutes left on the clock, again with a searing slapshot. During the remainder of the game CSL defended hard with Myles Barker providing a solid and mature contribution in defence. The final score - HBU CSL 6 - Herne Bay 4

United's second game of the weekend was against local team Herne Bay, United were two players down through suspension as well as two down through injury.
United started well and looked a different team from the previous evening with Barker scoring his first after three minutes. The Bay equalized a minute later with a good finish from Joe Singleton, but United were playing consistently, breaking down the defense and the best goal of the half came from a well orchestrated team move finished by Matt Barton.
United started the second half 1 - 5 in front and continued their dominance with no cards received and the only negative being an aggravated injury to Karl Smith, United won comfortably 11 - 2.
Manager McVey said: "If we played half as well as this last night we would have been victors, but now we must win the rest of our games with performances like this, but it is important for us now to concentrate on our final game of the European League next weekend away to Italy's Prato and get some treatment on current injuries before this clash."

This weekend Herne Bay United travelled to League rivals Bury to a highly anticipated first clash of the 2007/2008 season. So far both teams were unbeaten with United slightly having the edge with a higher goal difference. United are beginning to suffer with injuries from the challenge of playing in the European League. However, they started strongly creating a number of chances, but when Barker missed a penalty it was a sign of things to come.
United began to look apprehensive and cautious, very uncharacteristic as they normally take the game to their opponents and so were greatly on the back foot. It wasn't long before Bury took this opportunity and scored their first of the game beating keeper Daniel Barton on his near post. United's inability to find any form meant Bury went in to the half time break with a comfortable 2 - 0 lead.
United did start the second half a little better and finally got their first chance through player manager Phil McVey converting from the penalty spot. United again failed to take this opportunity to bring the game back into contention and players' frustrations began to show with Simon Hosking receiving a red card for a completely out of character incident between himself and Bury's Jack Holmes.
United continued to play poorly, a performance that wouldn't have looked out of place in Division 1, and Barker only added to a catalogue of mistakes by losing possession on the half way line leaving Bury to counter attack with two on two and beating Barton for the third time on the near post. Next on United's list was Neil Austin receiving an accumulative blue card and sent to the bench for the remainder of the game, this rolled on and after an unseen incident Jack Holmes retaliated by striking McVey on the back of the head in open play. This caused a coming together of the two teams and resulted in United's Sam Jackson and Bury's Holmes being shown the red card. This should have led to a penalty to United but a bully was given instead.
United now had no substitutes left and though with a last gasp Barker finally scored his first of the game bringing United back to 3 - 2 and with two minutes left on the clock a chance United could take a point from this game, but when Barker hit the underside of the crossbar with ten seconds left to go it was too late for United and they would have to concede their first game of the season.
Player Manager was extremely unhappy with the team's performance: "We lost to what hurts me to say the better team today and I am pleased to have only lost by one goal, which may now prove important in the later stages of the league.
The referees lost control today and the run of decisions was strongly against us but we didn't deserve to win and the only positive I can take is that we can't play this badly again. I now look forward to playing them later in the season at home where we hope to reverse this mistake."

Both of Herne Bay United's Under 11 teams were playing in the South Eastern Counties league on Sunday. First onto the rink were the Adders to play local rivals Herne Bay. HBU had most of the possession throughout the game and took an early lead through Connor Botting after just 90 seconds. Although the Adders had a number of chances it wasn't until midway through the first half that Michael Gregory added their second and he scored three more in a busy run up to the half time whistle. The Adders began the second half still as the dominant force although Herne Bay had a few goal scoring chances. Connor Botting scored a further three goals, evenly spaced throughout the half and, with Herne Bay unable to find the net, the Adders were clear 8 - 0 winners.
Next it was the Cobras' turn to play Plymouth. The Devon team were much improved from the first tournament in November but the Cobras still enjoyed much of the early possession. Two goals from Tom Barton gave them a half time lead despite Plymouth pressuring more as the half wore on. The second half was more evenly matched with Max Osborne scoring twice and Plymouth finding the net once, finishing HBU Cobras 4 - 1 Plymouth.
Adders faced Cobras in the third match and it was the Adders who took an early lead; Kier Maeers, Sam Whiffen and Michael Gregory all scoring in the first four minutes. The game settled after that with chances falling to both sides. No-one was able to score so the half ended 3 - 0. The second half was more action-packed with Adders again scoring first through Gregory with a second from Whiffen following soon after. Tom Barton was then judged to have been brought down and he pulled one back for the Cobras from the resulting direct free hit. Max Osborne then hit another for the Cobras three minutes later. A goal apiece for Gregory and Cobras' Jamie McVey followed within 20 seconds of each other. The final goal was for Barton giving a result of HBU Adders 6 - 4 HBU Cobras.
Next it was the Adders' turn to play Plymouth. Their opponents settled into defence and with no-one pushing them the Adders started the match at a very slow pace. With encouragement from the bench the pace finally picked up with Michael Gregory scoring a hat-trick and Sam Whiffen and Katie McVey scoring one apiece before half time. The second half became a chance for the Adders to practice their passing, having possession for almost the entire time; Plymouth managing just a few shots on goal. A flood of Adders' goals filled the half with two from Kier Maeers, one for Charley Bassom, three for Michael Gregory, two for Connor Botting and an own goal giving the Adders a 14 - 0 victory.
The final game of the day involved the Cobras and Herne Bay. Cobras were outplayed in the first half and defensive errors gave Herne Bay the chance to score four goals without any reply. However, the second half saw the Cobras stage a comeback with Max Osborne scoring a hat-trick. With one goal in it the final eight minutes saw lots of action as the Cobras tried to score an equaliser and Herne Bay fought to increase their lead. Despite all the efforts there were no further goals and it ended Herne Bay 4 - 3 HBU Cobras.
The weekend's results mean that HBU Adders now lead the SECRHA league and HBU Cobras are in 4th place.
HBU Adders: Charley Bassom, Connor Botting, Michael Gregory, Kier Maeers, Katie McVey, Callum Upton, Sam Whiffen
HBU Cobras: Tom Barton, James Carroll, Luca Commentucci, Jocie Greenwood, David Martindale, Jamie McVey, Joshua Oliver, Guy Osborne, Max Osborne, Alice Osborne-Luck

Herne Bay United travelled to Spain at the weekend to play their penultimate game in the Champions League against Spanish side CP Vic. It was always going to be an extremely difficult game for United as Vic needed a high score to put pressure on group leaders FC Porto. United due to work commitments had to travel on the day of the game, leaving home at 3.30am. The rink at Vic is an extremely difficult surface for non pros as it is terrazzo and very hard on the leg muscles.
As predicted Vic pressed the English champions from the start and were 5 - 0 up within the first 7 minutes. United slowly got their defence organised, and began creating chances of their own, Vic continued to push and at half time the score was 9 - 0 to the Spanish.
The second half saw much of the same as Vic pushed from the outset, the superior pace and finishing of the professionals soon began to count and in the first five minutes of the half Vic had added another five goals to make it 14 - 0. HBU did not drop their heads and began to hit their opponents on the counter attack, they got their reward with 18 minutes remaining in the game when Brendan Barker sprinted half the length of the rink before sending the keeper the wrong way with a well taken flick shot to put United on the score board and make the score 14 - 1. The Spanish side responded by stepping up the pace and scoring another six in eight minutes to make the score 20 - 1 with 10 minutes remaining. United, were now facing the potential of suffering the biggest European defeat in their history dug deep, and in the remaining 10 minutes created at least a dozen clear-cut chances of their own, hitting the woodwork eight times, and only conceding one more to make the final score 21 - 1 to the Spanish.
After the game Player/Coach Phil McVey said: "It was always going to a very difficult fixture for us, Vic are one of the top sides in the world, and they needed goals to boost their goal difference to put pressure on FC Porto who they play in their last match. I am extremely proud of the way the team played. They worked for each other, and never gave up. The team spirit they showed today was excellent. Although we were soundly beaten, we have learnt a lot about ourselves, and everyone gave their all. It is good preparation for our domestic fixtures coming up, away in the Premier league to our title rivals Bury, and then we have a local derby against Herne Bay before travelling to play the Italians, Prato, in our final European game in March. We lost 3 - 2 to them at home, and we know we should have won that match. If we can beat them in Italy it will be our first win on foreign soil in the Champions League.
"What this result has done is make us more determined to improve, and to keep the town of Herne Bay on the roller hockey map. The fact we manage to play in the Champions League is a victory in itself, and once again I would like to thank our sponsors and fans for all the support they have shown us".

The next day United played a full strength Middlesbrough side. The two sides were very evenly matched but it was United who went ahead, three minutes into the game Barker made it 0 - 1 finishing from two yards after the home side failed to clear their penalty area after a long range shot from Hosking. A minute later Barker scored his second of the match; this time he beat two players before rifling a shot past a helpless Ian Smith in the Middlesbrough goal. United, although not playing well looked comfortable, and midway through the half, Barker scored his third after some good work from Hosking to make it 0 - 3. Middlesbrough upped their game and they pulled one back a few minutes later. The game was now end to end, with both teams creating chances, Dan Barton in United's goal made a string of fine saves to keep United ahead. Then with four minutes remaining Dendy Hudson's long range effort beat the unsighted Middlesbrough keeper to make it 1 - 4 at half time.
Middlesbrough would not give in and they were given the lifeline they needed when Michael Abelson scored ten seconds into the second half to make it 2 - 4. The home side continued to pressure the champions and with 15 minutes left in the game Abelson scored his second to make it 3 - 4. United were now under severe pressure as Middlesbrough threw everything at them. Their defence held firm under the onslaught, and captain Hosking eased the pressure when he made it 3 - 5 with ten minutes to go. Middlesbrough came again at the tiring champions and with six minutes left Marc Rutland scored with a slap shot to make it 4 - 5. The home side continued to dominate possession, but could not turn the possession into goals. United's Hosking put the game out of reach when he scored five minutes before the end to make the final score 4 - 6 to the champions.
Afterwards captain Simon Hosking said: "This away weekend is always our toughest of the season, and having to wait until 4pm to play in Middlesbrough on Sunday afternoon was not ideal, but we ground out wins in both games which puts us top of the table on goal difference."
Player/Manager Phil McVey added: "I am extremely pleased with the 6 points; we didn't play anywhere near our potential in either game, and a lot of that was down to the opposition, both Grimsby and Middlesbrough frustrated our attack, and made it very difficult for us. Middlesbrough always seem to raise their game against us, and it is always a difficult rink to play at. Having said that we were way below par, and as in any sport, the sign of good side is winning even when you play badly. We have another tough Euro Champions League next weekend against the Spanish side Pati Vic, and then we travel to Soham to play our title rivals Bury on 8th March. After that we travel to Italy to face Prato in our final European match. So this weekend was a start of a tough month of hockey on the road for us, and it was vital to win both matches".

Current National Champions Herne Bay United faced their toughest test in the Premier League so far this season, with 2 away matches this weekend. Poor scheduling saw them having to play Grimsby at 13.00 on the Saturday, and then Middlesbrough at 16:00 on Sunday, not getting back into the Bay until the early hours of Monday morning.
Historically these fixtures have proved potential banana skins, and United knew it would be tough. Having had an early start, setting off from home at 6am Saturday morning, United started slowly against a determined Grimsby side. It was the home side who dominated the early possession, but they could not break through United's solid defence. Gradually the reigning champions started to play the ball around and came close to taking the lead, but Grimsby keeper Eddie Revel was in fine form and United could not find a way past him. Then with seven minutes remaining in the half, Grimsby captain Marc Waddingham finished well from a tight angle to put the home side 1 - 0 up. The goal gave United the shock they needed to step up a gear, and a minute later HBU capt Simon Hosking passed to player/coach Phil McVey who beat two players, rounded the keeper and coolly slotted the ball home to make it 1 - 1. Although both teams continued to have chances the half ended 1 - 1.
The second half saw United up their game, although Grimsby's defence held firm and the homeside created a number of chances of their own, it was United's Karl Smith who finished a well worked move with a first time shot to make the score 1 - 2 with 15 minutes remaining. Once behind, Grimsby were always going to find it difficult, and as they pushed for an equaliser United capitalised on the gaps in their defence. With eight minutes still to play United striker Brendan Barker sprinted half the length of the rink and sent his shot in off the far post to make it 1 - 3. Grimsby had to now take huge risks at the back, and this cost them when, with two minutes left on the clock, Dendy Hudson's first time shot made the final score 1 - 4 to United.

HBU CSL met Bury in a Premier League game at the Pier on Saturday evening. Bury, who are ranked second in the Premier league, were always going to be tough opposition. However the Manager was convinced that CSL could outplay them, but at the last minute, due to lack of player availability, the squad were down to only six outplayers, not really an adequate number for this level of roller hockey. However CSL played with full commitment ending the first half 2-0 down.
After the half time discussion they re-grouped and rotated players constantly in an effort to maintain energy levels, with Paul McVey scoring two goals in reply to Burys further 2 goals. Final result HBU CSL 2 − 4 Bury. This was a very credible result, the Captain, Joe Fidock, said after the game, "All the players gave 100% of themselves and I believe CSL could have beaten Bury if we had our full squad available, but the team are looking forward to the return match to be held in Soham on 9th February".

Herne Bay United returned to action in the English Premier League against 4th placed Grimsby on Sun morning.
The game started after Grimsby's Keeper sorted out a small technical difficulty and United immediately pounced scoring two goals in the first three and half minutes through Simon Hosking and Brendan Barker. United then kept the pressure on Grimsby trying to increase the score but failing to take their chances. Grimsby responded to the pressure and United were kept in the game with some excellent stops by keeper Dan Barton, also saving from the spot.
Grimsby's Mark Waddingham received a cut to the face when he clashed with United's Keeper when a high shot came into the penalty area and he had to leave the rink to receive medical treatment but was able to return. United finished the half on a high with Karl Smith and Barker scoring to make it 4-0.
Again United started strongly with Barker getting his third two minutes in only for Grimsby to cut the gap immediately with a good finish to beat in-form Barton.
United's Hosking then came back at Grimsby delivering a knock out blow with two quick fire goals, to open the gates for the rest of United's players to get on the score sheet bar Dendy Hudson and Nick Barton who was celebrating his 40th Birthday. United won 16-2 a convincing win keeping them on track to retain the title. Manager Phil McVey was ecstatic with the teams performance and said, "This is a great performance for the club and the players, both Keepers were strong today only conceding a goal each, and there were obvious improvements in defense and I have seen a lot of promising play going into the final half of the campaign, both on the European and domestic fronts"
United will now travel away for their next two Premier League games away to Grimsby and Middlesbrough before going to Spain to play the return game against Vic.

On Saturday night English champions Herne Bay United took on the mighty FC Porto in their final home game in the European Champions League. The amateurs of HBU were always going to find it difficult against the professionals of FC Porto.
With a virtual sell out crowd of close to 500 cheering the home side on United started the game strongly, and although the Portugese champions dominated possession, United's solid defence restricted them to shots from distance which were comfortable for Dan Barton in the United goal. HBU were playing counter-attacking hockey and the tactic seemed to be working as they created 10 chances in the first 5 minutes, Porto's keeper kept them out, and the stalemate continued.
United's defence continued to hold against mounting pressure, but with 12 minutes remaining in the half Porto's Moreira broke the deadlock with a clinical finish. A minute later Oliveira pounced on loose ball to make it 0-2. United were still creating chances in attack hitting the crossbar twice, but were now starting to tire, and gaps were opening up in their defence. Porto upped the pace and although Barton pulled off a string of fine saves, Porto scored 5 more in the last 5 minutes of the half to make the score 0-7 at halftime.
The second half began with Porto pressing, and United counter-attacking; it was United who created the early chances with Brendan Barker, Simon Hosking and Sam Jackson all coming close. As United's chances went begging, Porto took theirs, and in a 3 minute period they scored 5 goals to make it 0-12. With 20 minutes left in the game United knew they had to dig deep. United 2nd keeper Paul Nelson made at least 6 world class saves in a 2 minute period to keep the score at 12. HBU regrouped and attacked Porto again, this time it was Neil Austin and Dendy Hudson who came close with chances. The with 12 minutes remaining Porto captain Santos fouled Barker in the area, Hosking stepped up to take the penalty but pushed his shot wide. United continued to press and a minute later they were awarded a Direct Free Hit, a penalty from outside the box. Player coach Phil McVey stepped up to take it, he rounded the keeper, and with the keeper beaten his shot hit the underside of the bar and bounced out. This did not deter the home side, they continued to create chances, this time it was Matt Barton who hit the post with a first time effort.
With only 8 minutes remaining the score was still 0-12, but United were now completely shattered, Porto's superior fitness evident, and United were powerless to stop them as they scored 9 goals before the final whistle brought a thoroughly exciting game to a close, FC Porto running out 0-21 victors.
After the game HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "We are gutted with the score, but pleased with our performance, the crowd were brilliant from start to finish and we just wish we could have scored a few goals for them."
Player coach Phil McVey added: "I'm proud of the lads tonight, everyone of them gave their all, and no-one let their heads drop. FC Porto are probably the 2nd best team in the world, and they showed why. We stuck with them for large periods of the game, but their superior fitness was the biggest difference, 75% of their goals came in the last 7 minutes of each half. But overall we acquitted ourselves excellently, and the night was a great success for roller hockey, both for the town and for the country. The result wasn't the important thing tonight. There were a lot of families and children in the crowd, hopefully we have inspired them, they have watched one of the best teams in the world and it gives them something to aim for. I would also like to thank our sponsors, without them we wouldn't have been able to afford it, our European campaign has cost £12,000. It is very frustrating that in this day and age, with all the rhetoric from the government about getting kids involved in sports, that clubs like us, in all minority sports have to rely on the generosity of sponsors. If we win the Premier League again this year, we would love to enter the Euro Champions League again, but unless we can raise the funds from sponsors it looks as if we won't be doing it. Then all the public awareness, all the momentum we have achieved is lost, and we have to start again at the beginning."

Herne Bay United wish to thank, publicly and unreservedly, Keith Allen, President of the NRHA, personally, for his attendance and involvement with the HBU Club's 'home' matches in the European League.
The 3rd and final event at the Pier on Sat night was v FC PORTO, arguably the best Club Team in the world alongside FC Barcelona. The sell-out event was evidence of the support RH has and proof if any was needed that the sport has an enthusiastic following!
Keith travelled from Peterborough on all 3 occasions and acted as the third referee overseeing the 'sin bin' rinkside as well as being on the mic announcing the teams. He was also spokesperson to various dignitaries in attendance.
The NRHA 600 Club Draw was also done at the last 2 matches with the winners coming from the local Clubs. Absolutely no fix!!!!
These 3 matches, 50% of the Euro League Competition that HBU, as National Champions last season, were participating in, gave huge publicity to the Club and most importantly raised the profile of Roller Hockey.
Keith's attendance and support represented his and the NRHA's backing for the HBU Club's enterprise.
Thank You,
The HBU Committee.

Herne Bay United met East Grinstead in the Quarter - Finals of the National Senior Cup on Saturday. East Grinstead, at home playing in their first Senior National Cup, would face a tough opposition from current Premier League Champions and National Cup holders Herne Bay United.
United started as expected with a strong line up: Daniel Barton in goal, Neil Austin, Sam Jackson, Simon Hosking and Brendan Barker. United opened the scoring through Hosking after 4 minutes but it was less than a minute before East Grinstead equalized from a penalty that was placed in the top corner by Alex De Figueiredo.
United became unsettled and it looked as if East Grinstead could produce a major upset that only cup games can bring. It was a further five minutes before they regained their rhythm and began to consistently break down East Grinstead, using all their experience to tire their opposition. Neil Austin finished United's second which lead to further goals from Barker and Hosking, the first half ending at East Grinstead 1 - 8 H.B.U.
United continued going about their work with Sam Jackson scoring after 3 minutes, United never let up and paced their game well, working as a team. The rest of the goals came from Barker, Austin and player manager Phil McVey who said of the game, "A good team performance, once we found our rhythm and settled down. We now look forward to playing a Semi final at home, but we must focus now on the last 3 matches in the European League."
The final score East Grinstead 1 - 14 Herne Bay United.
It looked as if United would be playing their league rivals of the last 3 years Bury in the Semi-Final but, as cups do, Bury were the shock defeat of the day losing 6 - 2 to Manchester RHC, who will meet United at the Pier at a yet to be agreed date.

Herne Bay United's Under 11's team travelled to Soham on Saturday to play in the semi-final of the National Cup against Manchester.
The team started strongly and took the lead just 25 seconds into the game when Lewis Greenwood netted his shot. United enjoyed most of the possession in the first half and a goal from Michael Gregory, two by Alex Mount and two more for Lewis Greenwood ensured a good 6 - 0 lead at half time.
The second half was much more even with both sides having a number of chances on goal. Alex Mount claimed the only United goal in this half and although Manchester scored once it was never going to be enough. Herne Bay United won 7 - 1 and will now play Kings Lynn in the finals on 5th July.

The second game of the weekend was against Manchester on Sunday morning; Manchester had previously played Herne Bay the evening before and won this game 4-2.
HBU CSL started the first half playing both good defensive and attacking hockey. The scoring was opened by Charlie Pughe after 10 minutes, followed by two goals from Paul McVey. HBU CSL went into half time with a 3 − 0 lead. Again the team knew that Manchester would fight back hard and were proved correct. HBU CSL lost shape in their game play in the first ten minutes of the second half and allowed Manchester to put three goals past their keeper. CSL didn´t allow their heads to go down and re-grouped and fought back hard putting a further five goals, including a penalty from Arran Bowyer, past Manchester´s keeper with only one further goal in reply. The final score HBU CSL 8 - 4 Manchester. The only down side of the weekend's hockey was the injury sustained by Steve Clarke after a collision, which has left him with a fractured knee cap and his leg in plaster for the next six weeks.

HBU CSL played in two Premier League games at the Pier at the weekend.
They met Middlesbrough on Saturday evening, a game they knew would be tough to win. The Captain Joe Fidock opened the scoring with two goals in the first four minutes. These were quickly followed by goals from Arran Bowyer, Joe King and Steve Clarke putting HBU CSL in a good starting position within the first 10 minutes of the game. However, Joe Fidock helped Middlesbrough to get on the score board by scoring an own goal. This spurred Middlesbrough to score a goal of their own within the next 30 seconds. HBU CSL finished the first half with a healthy lead of 7 goals to Middlesbrough´s 2 goals.
At half time the team discussed the fact that they knew Middlesbrough, with all their experience, would come into the second half determined to draw back the score and to win the game. It took Middlesbrough 10 minutes to start scoring and they scored three goals within quick succession. HBU CSL upped their defence and kept the score to 7 − 5 until the last three minutes when Middlesbrough put another goal past the keeper. At this point Middlesbrough thought they were able to win the game but Myles Tichband for HBU CSL put their eighth goal away and the team kept most of the possession until the final whistle. A very satisfying win for HBU CSL.

Second stop Sheffield was another game United would expect to take comfortably and they eased into the game and waited for the goals to come but were surprised by the physical nature of Sheffield's play and two new players on their team were very hard into tackles and conceded a number of fouls. United's experience showed and they dominated throughout and once again only scored a quarter of the chances they should have and won the game 13 - 2.
United's Manager Phil McVey again was happy with the overall performance but added, "It's a shame we conceded the two late goals in both games this weekend but we have come away and got the 6 points available from the two games and our end goal remains in sight."
Captain Simon Hosking was United's top scorer this weekend. "It's great to have got goals this weekend but our focus moves onto next weekend we can take a win against East Grinstead into the 2nd round of the National Cup.".
Herne Bay United: Daniel Barton, Paul Nelson, (GKs) Phil McVey (2), Karl Smith (2), Chris Espejo, Simon Hosking (9), Neil Austin (7), Matt Barton (4), and Brendan Barker (7) - over both matches
Club Coach, Phil McVey expressed his pleasure at the fact that both Club teams won all their matches and are sitting in top and 4th of the Premier League (9 teams).

Herne Bay United had their first double header away weekend playing Halifax on Saturday and Sheffield on Sunday.
United started well against Halifax with Brendan Barker opening the scoring in first 5 seconds. Neil Austin added the second shortly after and it looked like this was going to a high scoring game but it seemed the early goals acted against United who only scored 2 more in the remaining twenty minutes of the half, missing a number of simple chances as well as a penalty.
United came out a different team in the second half playing the ball around, with lots of diagonal skating and just waited for the chances to come to them. United scored 14 in the second half and due to two mistakes conceded twice leaving the final score Halifax 2 - 18.
Herne Bay United Manager Phil McVey was happy with the overall performance and said, "We should have scored double what we did and not taking anything away from their keeper's excellent performance, but the players responded to instruction at half time and we took a comfortable win."

Herne Bay United played their third game of the European League at the Pier on Saturday night hoping to put on a stronger performance than in the previous two games.
H.B.U. began well and defended without fault from the start of the game, being patient and willing to progress steadily into the game. As the first half progressed United's confidence grew with the Italians getting very few chances on goal, and in the first ten minutes United had 7 open chances on goal to Prato's 3.
United wanted to keep up their tempo in the game and use all the team to the full with regular rotations. Shortly after the tenth minute and United's second substitution, Brendan Barker scored from a set move slapping the ball to the far post beating the Italian 'keeper Dal Zotto. With this the 300 strong crowd in the Pier Pavilion came to life in excitement of creating a possible European upset. United continued to have the majority of the possession creating chance after chance but however failing to capitalize on these chances. However Prato got their first shot on goal for 6 minutes deflecting off defending Barker to catch 'keeper Daniel Barton off balance.
United didn't put their heads down and they continued to show their fight, Barton made a number of great saves with a major save from a penalty in the dying minutes of the half. United also had a penalty with Dendy Hudson hitting the target three times forcing three equally great saves from Andrea. The half-time score was 1-1.
After the half-time entertainment from the very talented Da Capo Dance Troupe, United came out with the belief they could take this game and the Italian's brought on the experienced Enrico Bernadini, 44, who only a few years ago was considered one of the best strikers in the world and won every major title available. United continued to play as strong as the Italians but it was they who broke the stalemate 6 minutes in and the injection of Berrnadini's experience a great contributor to their second goal even if it had deflected in off Sam Jackson's foot!
Again United built the possession up getting the majority of the chances but were denied on more than one occasion by the post or the cross bar, and so it was the Italians who got the luck of play with a third goal from a deflecting shot off the 'keepers foot after attempting the save. United still had time to bring the game back with ten minutes left of play to push up on to the Italians creating chance after chance, the best being from Barker doing all the hard work beating the keeper but failing to put the ball into the net, only hitting the cross bar again. However the crowd found belief and again rallied their team on. United now looked the stronger team actually pressing their Italian counterparts whose defense was failing, United just needed to finish. Their efforts finally paid off with Simon Hosking scoring in the top corner from a set move leaving their keeper no chance. Just over a minute left and believing it could be done the crowd were on their feet with their voices being heard from far away. United again had two great opportunities but Dal Zotto kept United out until the whistle with the final score being Herne Bay United 2 - 3 Prato.
Manager/Coach, Phil McVey was pleased with the performance and said, "Tonight we showed how we can play and though we are amateur we still have a place in the world of Roller Hockey. If you had asked me before the game, would I take a 2-3 loss I would have bitten your hand off, but after that performance and knowing the amount of possession we had as well as the chances I now feel we should have won and deserved at least a draw."
Captain Simon Hosking added to his Player Manager's comments and said, "I can't believe we didn't do it, I'm now really looking forward to the away leg in March and am pleased with the effort and performance of ALL of the players. However our next task is FC Porto at home on the 19th January and they are the top ranked team in the world alongside FC Barcelona and we must improve on our away result with them."
The Italian goals came from the captain Luca Sterpini and Matteo Crudelli. United must not be too down hearted as they put on one of the best games the Pier Pavilion has ever been privileged to stage and the crowd were kept entertained for the whole evening. The match was efficiently and fairly refereed by the 2 Spanish officials.
TEAM: Dan BARTON, David GARLICK (GKs), Neil AUSTIN, Brendan BARKER (1), Chris ESPEJO, Simon HOSKING (1), Dendy HUDSON, Sam JACKSON, Phil McVEY, Karl SMITH.
We hope that if you get a chance to see United play it is a good evening for the whole family in a friendly environment. Tickets for the FC Porto Match on 19th January are available NOW at the Pier Desk for £4.00 and £2.50. Get them early to avoid disappointment

HBU CSL met Halifax in a Premier League game at the Pier on Sunday.
Newly promoted Halifax took a two goal lead in the first ten minutes of the game, HBU CSL worked hard to bring the score back to 2-2 at half time with goals from Myles Barker and Paul McVey.
The second half saw Halifax going into the lead again by 5 goals to 4, with just four and a half minutes left on the clock, but determination from CSL saw Paul McVey score two goals to complete his hat trick for this game and Joe Fidock confirming the win with a goal within the last two minutes.
The Captain, Joe Fidock, said, "The team played far from their best and made hard work of what they believed should have been a comfortable win, but all credit to Halifax, they kept up the pressure throughout the game. Hopefully at our next training session we will be able to iron out some of the problems we experienced today in preparation for our next game on Sunday 16th December against Houghton Regis."

Herne Bay United's Under 13's team competed in a South Eastern Counties tournament on Sunday. In both matches the team were the dominant force playing much of the game in attack and having the majority of goal scoring chances. In the first match against local rivals Herne Bay Alex Mount scored all four goals giving United a 4 - 1 victory. The second match against East Grinstead finished with the same scoreline; Lewis Greenwood, Ashley Barton, Harry Rowbotham and Alex Mount all getting a goal each. Sunday's results keep the team at the top of the league.
A select under 11's team also played three friendly matches at the tournament. They struggled against the much larger East Grinstead team losing 0 - 6. They then played two games against Herne Bay's under 11's team. In both matches United had the majority of possession, only allowing Herne Bay to have limited chances to attack their goal. Two goals each for Connor Botting and Max Osborne, and one for Charley Bassom gave United a 5 - 1 win in the first game. Connor Botting and Alice Osborne-Luck each scored once in a shortened second game to win 2 - 1.
The Under 13's matches were filmed to be included in the children's sports programme Sportsround, to be shown either this Saturday or next at 11.45am on BBC2.
Under 13's: Ashley Barton, Lewis Greenwood, Michael Gregory, Katie McVey, Alex Mount, Harry Rowbotham, Joseph Upton

As champions of England, HBU have the right and obligation to participate in the European League. The last time that this competition came to the Pier Pavilion was in 1999 when HBU qualified for the final 8 of the Champions League as the competition was then called.
HBU is competing with its home-grown amateur squad in a league of the best professionals in the World. HBU's prime motive is to put the highest standard of roller hockey on show in Herne Bay for the many fans and the growing number of children in the town who are aspiring to be the players of the future.
The difference in standard could not be clearer. Since the start of the season, HBU have played just 4 matches. In the English Premier League, the results are two wins with 22 goals for and 3 against. In the European League, Saturday's match brings the tally to two defeats, 1 goal for and 34 against.
The match opened promisingly with HBU trading possession and shots with the visitors but in the third minute a hard shot from a tight angle defeated keeper Dan Barton and set a pattern of scoring which took the Catalans to 4 - 0 by the 10 minute mark. HBU had to re-focus its attention on defence and this was effective but a loss of concentration going into the interval gave away three quick goals making it 0-7 at half-time.
HBU made a shaky start to the second half and the visitors rattled up 5 more goals before HBU got their defensive thinking together again and it was not until the closing few minutes of the period that Vic scored their final two goals.
As Saturday's 400 spectators will tell you, HBU are able to play hockey with these top sides and our players show they have considerable skill. Second half scoring opportunities fell to just about all the HBU players, bringing the crowd to it its feet but it was not to be and on several occasions the speed of Vic's counter attack cost HBU goals.
In general the professional consistency is able to capitalize on the mistakes of the amateurs. In this year's league, no team is going to let up in their endeavour to score goals as their position in the final play-off may depend upon goal difference. HBU had failed in its endeavor to keep the score in single figures but everyone left the Pier Pavilion in good spirits.
The evening got off to a great start with a very exciting and competitive under 11's match that showed what sport is all about and how girls and boys can be equally competitive at roller hockey. Pre-match and half-time entertainment was provided by the Da Capo Dance troupe. Our referees for the evening came from France and Germany.
The whole event showed the spirit of the town and the value of the Pier Pavilion as a venue at the heart of the town. A lot of hard work and fund raising goes into these events. HBU's reward is to keep Herne Bay well and truly on the international map of Roller Hockey, a position it has held for coming up to 100 years. The support of sponsors, spectators and the venue has been vital and we thank them all.
Your next opportunity to see a European League match is on Saturday 15th December against Italian side HC Prato (near Florence). FC Porto (Portugal) on 19th January will be the final 'Home' match before the HBU team go to Vic (Spain) and Prato (Italy) in Feb & March 2008.
HBU Team: Dan Barton (goal, first half), Chris Espejo, Karl Smith, Phil McVey, Sam Jackson, Simon Hosking, Neil Austin, Dendy Hudson, Brendan Barker, Paul Nelson (goal, second half).
Player-manager Phil McVey commented, "This result shows an improvement on the 20 - 1 defeat at FC Porto in October. We are not getting match readiness from our domestic competition as there are virtually no matches before the New Year. Training is no substitute for competition but our finishing and results should now begin to improve".

Before the big European League match on Saturday evening, Herne Bay United's two under 11 teams played a friendly match as part of the evening's entertainment. The game was closely contested with the Adders having most of the possession and the Cobras proving strong in defence.
Both sides had a number of chances in the first half but the teams were deadlocked until halfway through when Tom Barton raced down the rink to score for the Cobras. It was several minutes before Charlie Botting slotted in a perfect pass from Michael Gregory to equalise. Gregory added a goal of his own just before half time to give the Adders a 2-1 lead.
The second half progressed in much the same way as the first and again it was sometime before any goals were scored. The Cobras equalised through a lovely passing move which Tom Barton finished. A few minutes later the Adders were ahead again through Michael Gregory and Charlie Botting completed their scoring almost at the end of the game, giving the Adders a 4-2 victory.
It was an entertaining match and the first time that these teams had played in front of such a large crowd who, although coming to see the big match, eagerly lent their support to the younger players.
Following the under 11's match Da Capo Dance Troupe gave a stunning performance and they also provided some half-time entertainment.
Adders: Charley Bassom, Charlie Botting, Connor Botting, Michael Gregory, Kier Maeers, Callum Upton, Sam Whiffen
Cobras: Tom Barton, James Carroll, Luca Commentucci, David Martindale, Jamie McVey, Katie McVey, Joshua Oliver, Alice Osborne-Luck, Joseph Upton

United's 2nd game of the weekend was against newly promoted local neighbours Herne Bay.
United eased themselves into this Sunday morning game and the in-form Simon Hosking carried on where he left off the previous evening scoring United's first 3 goals. Herne Bay were giving United space in choosing to play a box defence allowing United to have the majority of possession. Hosking was involved in the next two goals, scoring one and setting up Barker for the easy tap in. Dendy Hudson finished United's first half goals giving United 6 but then they took their foot off the gas in the closing seconds allowing Bay's Tom White to finish to open their scoring. United had 26 shots on goal in the first half but only scored 6 and need to improve on their finishing to pose any threat to European side CP Vic.
The second half was much the same with Hosking scoring a further two, setting up Barker, with McVey finishing from the spot for the second time in the weekend. Simon Hosking has to be United's player of the weekend scoring more than half of the team's goals and assisting in a number of the others, putting in a true captains performance.
Manager McVey marked his return to Herne Bay United's first team with 2 goals and two wins, said after the game, "Though these were far from the team's best performances and we must improve our finishing going into next weeks European game, we have only conceded two goals and I am happy that at least we had the chances to finish even with a team that sat back and defended so tight not leaving us a great deal of room to get to the goal. Now our focus is on next week's European League game and to get the best possible result from the game."
United play CP Vic next week at the Pier Pavilion Herne Bay with the Bar and doors opening at 7pm and with pre match entertainment and the Kick Off of the main event at 8:30pm. CP Vic are one of the top teams in Spain's Professional League and are highly paid with matches televised weekly alongside football. CP Vic are also strong contenders for the European League title and if there are any old Roller Hockey fans out there or you would like to see a high profile game of sport or you like to support your country and local teams in European campaigns the next three European games are all being played at the Pier Pavilion and should not be missed! Tickets available at the Pier Pavilion and there is a current offer available for adults and children who purchase tickets for all 3 games.
Herne Bay United: Garrett Priestley GK, Matt Barton, Karl Smith, Nick Barton, Chris Espejo, Simon Hosking (6), Phil McVey (1), Dendy Hudson (1), Brendan Barker (2), Paul Nelson GK.

Herne Bay United had their first two Premier League games of the season last weekend, and it should prove good preparation for this weekend's European clash against CP Vic of Spain.
The first game of the League saw both Herne Bay United PL teams playing each other. United, the current League Champions, opened the scoring almost immediately after the whistle with Brendan Barker and Simon Hosking linking up perfectly on a well rehearsed move. HBU CSL quickly regrouped and had begun to halt United's attacks and it took 7 further minutes of play before United found the net again through a coolly placed pass for Karl Smith to put the ball into an empty net.
United dominated the majority of the half with CSL having a number of half chances but failing to find the goal. Both teams were having a number of issues with the referee over fouls throughout the half and the game was beginning to become more and more scrappy with the look of a local Derby.
United continued to dominate finding the net three more times before the end of the half through Hosking and Barker with Player Manager Phil McVey finishing from the spot leaving the first half at 5-0.
Neil Austin opened the scoring in the second half after 3 minutes and United looked as if they had picked up momentum, Simon Hosking netted a further 3 goals in the next five minutes before the game became an end to end battle with incident after incident and tempers beginning to flail, you would have been forgiven for not believing both teams were from the same club.
Barker netted United's 10th with 7 minutes to go. In the last 4 minutes two incidents saw two players from each team sent off. The first was after a strong pressing tackle from Hosking on CSL's Joe King, followed by a very uncharacteristic retaliation which caused United's Hosking to react ending with both players off with a five minute sin bin Penalty. Shortly afterwards a further incident occurred between Karl Smith of United and Liam Holland of CSL with a unseen incident resulting in Liam Holland lashing at Karl Smith which caused a team incident with Neil Austin and Liam seeing the red card and a one match ban each. A further Red was issued to CSL's Steve Clarke for continued verbal abuse after a warning to the Ref from the bench.
The game restarted with a number of embarrassed faces and United stamped the authority on the game with Barker netting off a deflecting shot in the final 2 minutes with the end score finishing Herne Bay United 11 - Herne Bay United CSL 0.

Although HBU travelled without their normal goal keeper, out player Dan Buggins stepped in and filled this position. HBU on this occasion dominated the tournament beating Plymouth 12 - 1, Herne Bay 10 - 2 and East Grinstead 11 - 1. The team played some well organised hockey resulting in some good 'team' goals.

Both of Herne Bay United's under 11's teams played in the South Eastern Counties League at the weekend. The first match saw the Adders take on local rivals Herne Bay in a very one-sided match. The Adders displayed a total domination of the game allowing their opponents just three shots on goal in the whole match. Five goals from Michael Gregory, four from Connor Botting, two from Charley Bassom and one from Charlie Botting saw them to a 12-0 win.
Next it was the Cobras' turn to play Herne Bay. This was more keenly contested by Herne Bay although the Cobras were always the stronger team. Three goals from Max Osborne, and one each for Tom Barton, Jamie McVey and Jocie Greenwood along with an own goal gave them a clear 7-2 victory.
HBU Adders returned to the rink to play Plymouth. This was another easy game, the score line not doing justice to the number of shots that the Adders had on goal. Their defence lapsed nearer the end of the second half but the determination of the team kept a clean sheet. Two goals each for Michael Gregory, Connor Botting, Charlie Botting and Charley Bassom as well as one for Sam Whiffen gave the Adders a 9 - 0 win.
The two United teams then played each other in what proved to be the most exiting game of the day. The Adders started strongest with two quick goals before the game settled down. Although the Cobras eaqualised, by half time the Adders had a four goal lead. The Cobras scored three goals at the beginning of the second half and looked to be getting back in the game. However, the Adders' experience enabled them to get stuck in and pull the goals back. Michael Gregory scored five, along with two for Sam Whiffen and one for Connor Botting to give the Adders an 8 - 5 win, all the Cobras' goals coming from Tom Barton.
The final match saw HBU Adders, with one less player due to injury, playing EC Select. The Adders' defence was torn apart by a strong EC Select team during the first half. Too many mistakes allowed the opposition to score seven while the Adders could only get one. However, the team regrouped at half time and played much better for the second half. Unfortunately it was not enough and despite two goals from Michael Gregory and one each for Connor and Charlie Botting the Adders lost 4 - 8.
HBU Adders: Charley Bassom, Charlie Botting, Connor Botting, Michael Gregory, Kier Maeers, Callum Upton, Sam Whiffen

Herne Bay United traveled to Portugal to play the first game of their European League campaign at the weekend and were humbled by the professionalism of the Roller Hockey giants FC Porto. FC Porto are one of the top three teams in the world and are serious contenders for the European League title, and demonstrated exactly why that is.
The United players have been working hard to improve their game and were hopeful of a closer game, but they were quickly brought down to earth as FC Porto scored 3 goals within the first 4 minutes. The difference between Porto who have training every day, to United who get to the rink just once a week was clear to see.
FC Porto never let up with constant pressure from start to finish. United did have a number of chances but Simon Hosking was the only player to convert his chance into a goal manned by Edo Bosch, No 1 'keeper in the world.
The final score was 20-1 and even though the gap was large United never let their heads down and showed they will never give up. In playing such a hard, high paced game, there was much to learn and this being United's first competitive game of the season in any league, they must not look too negatively on the result but accept the major factor is the difference between the top side in a professional Portuguese league to the top team in an amateur league.
United play Spanish side Club Pati Vic on the 17th November at the Pier Pavilion. United have two Premier League fixtures prior to this and will therefore have a few more games in which to improve and work on their plan of attack for the next high profile game.
Manager Phil McVey said after the game, "It was our first match of the season, so we knew it would be a baptism of fire against a very strong FC Porto. We are disappointed with the scoreline; lack of sharpness in defence cost us dearly. Having said that, I am optimistic about the rest of our European campaign. We have just played one of the favourites to win the whole thing, we won't play as badly again. When we get home I will watch a tape of the game, look at the areas of our game that we need to work on and then be ready to test our modifications against Vic next month".
The FCP coach said in his TV interview he had to take the opportunity to score highly as goal difference may be a crucial factor at the end of the competition.
The game was broadcast live on Portuguese national TV (RTP2).

HBU´s Under 15 team travelled to Soham on Sunday to take part in the second tournament of the Eastern Counties U15 league. They started the day extremely well by playing good team hockey and as a consequence beat teams that had beaten them in the previous tournament, scores for these two games Letchworth 4 − 10 HBU; HBU 10 − 3 Ely. The third game against Bury was a tough game, they played the game at a high pace. Despite losing the game, HBU had improved on their scores from the previous encounter, the final score Bury 8 − 6 HBU. In the fourth game tiredness showed and lack of concentration allowed Kings Lynn to go 3 goals ahead by half time, in this game the team attempted to play the game as individuals and not as a team and as a result they lost 5 − 0 to Kings Lynn. All in all the Under 15 team showed what they are able to achieve and believe that they will improve further in their next tournament.

HBU CSL played the first Premier League game of the season against newly promoted Herne Bay at the Pier on Saturday evening.
In the first half HBU CSL allowed their game to be played at the slower pace of the opposition, despite the Coach giving the team advice that this would happen. It took the first quarter of the game for the team to get into their stride and to start playing, with five goals coming from some good team play in front of goal with one in reply from Herne Bay´s Dave Todd.
The second half started at a higher tempo with HBU CSL scoring two goals in quick succession and Joe Fidock scoring a penalty. Herne Bay responded by defending hard with Dave Todd making the break for the Bay scoring two further goals but CSL´s Paul McVey matched these with two goals of his own. The final score HBU CSL 10 − 3 Herne Bay.
The Captain Joe Fidock said, "It was disappointing that we did not play at our normal pace, but being the first game of the season lack of match practice showed, but I was pleased with the players' performance and we will now have to work to improve in readiness for our next game."

Eighteen young players from Herne Bay United travelled to St Omer, France at the weekend for a number of friendly matches and a training session.
On Saturday the Under 12's played two very competitive matches. In the first St Omer scored right at the very start of the game pushing United to play very defensively. St Omer scored again with five minutes until half time. This inspired United to try several shots but they finished the half 0-2 down. In the second half it was United who opened the scoring with a goal from Alex Mount but St Omer responded to keep a two goal lead. A goal from Harry Rowbotham sparked a frantic last few minutes but the score remained St Omer 3-2 HBU.
In their second game it was United's turn to snatch an early goal through Harry Rowbotham with Alex Mount adding a second a few minutes later and the score remained the same at half time. St Omer started the second half strongly leaving HBU 'keeper Eddie Mount needing to make a number of good saves. However St Omer pressed hard and were able to add three goals within 5 minutes to win the game 3-2.
The Under 9's showed their developing skills with a good display of hockey in both of their matches. In their first game they dominated the early play with goals by Connor Botting, Jamie McVey and a hat-trick for Tom Barton, a deserved reward for their hard work. St Omer managed to get one goal back ending the half at 5-1. The second half began with St Omer capitalising on early defensive mistakes and they scored two quick goals beofre Tom Barton scored again. United had a number of good chances but were unable to make any count although St Omer scored again. HBU ended the game as 6-4 winners.
The second game was played with both teams having a good share of the possession with play running from end to end. Tom Barton opened the score for United but St Omer got two quick goals before Tom Barton equalised. A spell of possession for United earned another two goals from Tom Barton and they finished the half 4-2 up. The second half started with St Omer scoring straight from the whistle but Tom Barton quickly restored United's lead. St Omer scored again but a determined United defence saw the team hang on to claim another victory at 5-4.
Herne Bay United's girls' team had never played together before but came away from St Omer with two wins. The first game started positively as just after a minute Charlie Botting put United ahead. St Omer soon equalised before the game swung to favour United's possession. The girls had a number of shots on goal including several that deflected off the post, but it was not until the last few seconds of the half that Charlie Botting scored again to put United into a 2-1 half time lead. The second half began with United again in possession and a goal for Jocie Greenwood stretched United's lead. The girls passed and tackled well for the rest of the game and a goal for Charley Bassom in the last minute secured a 4-1 victory.
The second game saw plenty of opportunity for goals and another good display of the girls' passing and defence but the score was 0-0 at half time. The second half continued in a similar manner but the girls' work began to reap rewards with two goals in quick succession, one each for Charlie Botting and Charley Bassom, enough to give them a 2-0 victory.
On the Sunday morning all the players were involved in two training sessions which finished with a match, the teams comprising a mixture of French and English players. The weekend gave the young players some good practise and match experience as well as strengthening the ties between the two clubs.
Under 12's: Ashley Barton, Lewis Greenwood, Michael Gregory, Alex Mount, Eddie Mount (GK), Harry Rowbotham, Brandon Thomas, Joseph Upton (GK), Sam Whiffen
Under 9's: Tom Barton, Connor Botting, Luca Commentucci, Jocie Greenwood, Jamie McVey, Callum Upton (GK)
Girls: Charley Bassom, Charlie Botting, Jocie Greenwood, Katie McVey, Joseph Upton (GK)

We attended an Eastern Counties Division One tournament in Kings Lynn on Sunday.
The HBU team, although this a Senior tournament, consisted of mainly Junior and Schoolboy players. Our first match was against the home team, Kings Lynn. The older and more physical Kings Lynn team, although they did have two younger players involved, were very experienced. It was an exciting game on what is a much smaller rink than that which HBU train on, this allowed very easy counter attacking by Kings Lynn to any mistake made by the HBU and our goal keepers were really put to the test. This match ended a 5-5 draw.
Our second match was against Grimsby, who fielded the majority of the Premier League team. We went into this match with some trepidation being without four of the more senior players. However this again was an eye opener, the first goal was scored by Grimsby in the first four minutes of the game, and we believed that this would be the beginning of the flood. However we held them well having many shots on their goal and went into half time 1-0 down. During the second half the team lost shape for the first ten minutes and allowed Grimsby to go 5-1 ahead, however the team dug deep and managed to retrieve the game to finish with a more respectable score line of Grimsby 6 − 4 HBU.
The third match of the day was against HBU´s local rivals Herne Bay; this was a game that the HBU team had been looking forward to playing. Herne Bay have been newly promoted to the Premier league and believe were using the tournament as a ‘tester’ and like us were without other senior players.
The first goal was scored at six minutes by Liam Holland, but three replies from Herne Bay took us into half time 1-3 down. In the second half HBU upped the pace and tempo of their game, with Kai Dillon, Charlie Pughe and Arran Bowyer scoring the next three goals with no reply from Herne Bay. Final score HBU 4 − 3 Herne Bay.
The Captain, Arran Bowyer said, "It was a really good test for the younger players and also gives us a good idea of the type of game and opposition we will meet during our Premier League campaign. I was very pleased with the team especially with the younger ones, who played exceptionally well."

Herne Bay United Under 9´s team played their first ever matches on Sunday when they competed against Herne Bay in two friendlies at the Pier. Due to an injury to Herne Bay´s goalkeeper, HBU´s spare goalie stepped in so that the matches could take place.
In the first match HBU had the majority of possession and managed a number of shots on target including several saved by the keeper´s head. Goals for Connor Botting, Tom Barton and two from Charley Bassom took United to a 4-0 lead at half time. In the second half Herne Bay picked up their defence and, although United continued to enjoy long spells of possession, they could only add one more goal through Tom Barton to finish 5-0 winners.
The second match was similar to the first with HBU again claiming the majority of possession. Herne Bay managed to attack on a couple of occasions but the dominance of the United team resulted in two goals for Tom Barton, two for Charley Bassom and one for Connor Botting, giving another 5-0 victory.
The two matches gave the teams a chance to look at their strengths and weaknesses, and both showed promise for the future.
Herne Bay United´s Under 9´s will be travelling to France in October for training and matches against St Omer.

HBU's first team traveled to St. Omer at the weekend for an International tournament. It was always going to be a difficult weekend as the team had 5 matches, three on Saturday and two on Sunday, against some of the best teams from France, Germany and Switzerland. The tournament was the ideal Pre-Season training the team needed.
Club coach Phil McVey told the players the weekend was to be all about working on our defence in preparation for the tough season ahead. With this in mind HBU's first game was against the hosts St Omer. HBU were extremely rusty in attack and, although the defending was OK, there was plenty of room for improvement. That said, HBU were more than a match for St Omer, and were unlucky to lose 4-2.
Coach's Comments: Having not played competitive hockey for three months we knew it would be hard. I was pleased with the performance; the defending wasn't perfect, but it was huge improvement on last year's defending.
The second game of the day was against top German side Iserlohn. United's restricted man-to-man defence was better in this game, as was their attacking play. Unfortunately, United failed to take their opportunities and were 3-1 down with 5 minutes remaining. Trying to win the game, Player Coach Phil McVey instructed the players to press the Germans. This opened the game up, but again HBU failed to take their chances, the Germans capitalised and United went down 5-1.
Coach's Comments: Although disappointed with the result, our defence was much better in this game. We created more clear cut chances than the opposition, and the score did not reflect the game. As I told the lads it was all about restricted man-to-man, then with 5 minutes left I told them to press. Overall I was pleased with the defence in this one. An improvement on the first game.
The third game of the day was against French champions La Roche. The team took a huge leap forward in this game, it was almost a perfect display of man-to-man restricted zone. The French had more of the possession, but could not penetrate, whereas United's discipline at the back meant the French over committed. United ran out comfortable winners 3-1.
Coach's Comments: Excellent. The lads remained focused on the defence, this drew in the French which meant we had more room to play our hockey. 3-1 was not a fair reflection as again we missed a hat full of chances. Overall, a impressive display in defence.
Unfortunately United had to play the two matches on Sunday a man short, as Matt Barton picked up a grazed knee in the match against La Roche, and declared himself unfit on Sunday morning.
The fourth game was against the Swiss side Montreux, United's defence was again spot on and HBU ran out comfortable 4-1 winners. The result was never in doubt as Montreaux did not create a chance in open play. Their goal came from the penalty spot. United meanwhile continued to create umpteen chances, the majority of which were missed. Having said that another excellent performance.
Coach's Comments: Our most dominant performance of the weekend, Montreux never put us under sustained pressure. The discipline of our players in defence was very good, and we created chance after chance. Overall, even better than the performance against La Roche.
The final game was against Quivert; the French side had won all of their games by at least a couple of goals. Although United were tired, their defending was excellent and in attack they again had the lion's share of chances, and again they failed to take them. Quivert were a very strong team and well organised. The game was extremely close, and United were unlucky to lose 3-2.
Coach's Comments: Another excellent team performance, the solid man-to-man restricted defence gave us the platform to play our hockey. In the entire tournament I think we might have conceded the least goals out of everyone, and we definitely created more chances than anyone else. We need to finish our chances, but that will come. Overall, I am extremely pleased and impressed with the players attitude, and aptitude; the defending was excellent.
Herne Bay United finished in 4th place.
