Peter Wimble Cup

Herne Bay United Veterans win Peter Wimble trophy 2009Herne Bay United Veterans retained the National 'Peter Wimble' Trophy this weekend at the Pier Pavilion. Having won the cup for the first time last year, United went into the tournament as favourites. With three games on Saturday and two on Sunday it was always going to a tiring weekend. Their first game on Saturday afternoon was against Sheffield; although starting slowly United were soon on top and they ran out comfortable 10-0 winners.

The second game of their campaign was against Houghton Regis; this was a bigger test for them. At the end of the first half United were winning 2-0, the second half saw the reigning champions up their game scoring three more unanswered goals to run out 5-0 winners.

The third game of the day was against Grimsby. Tis match was an extremely physical affair, Grimsby were trying to put United off their game by roughing them up. The tactic failed as United won the game 4-1.

The following morning United started the day with a comfortable 10-0 win over Norwich, the win set up a winner takes all match against local rivals Herne Bay. Whoever won the game would win the tournament. Both sides were moving the ball around well, but it was United who created the early chances. Herne Bay then started to get their own team game going and came close to going in front. However with eight minutes left in the first half United's Chris Espejo beat two players before coolly slotting the ball home past a helpless keeper to put United 1-0 up, scoring the only goal of the first half. Herne Bay knew they had to re-double their efforts in attack, this they did and despite creating three or four clear cut chances they could not find a way past United keeper Garret Priestly. With the game in the balance it was United who scored to go 2-0 ahead; Nigel Mills won the ball on the half way line, passed to Phil McVey who rounded the defender and fired an un-stoppable shot into the top right hand corner of the goal. With a two goal cushion United could now afford to shut up shop and close the game out. Despite a valiant effort the Bay could not break through United's solid defence and at the final whistle it was United who ran out 2-0 winners.

United captain Phil McVey said: "Having won the cup last year we were determined to do it again. We played some good hockey and our defence was excellent. We only conceded one goal in the whole tournament. We only reformed this side last year, and in the last 12 months we have won the Veteran's Cup twice and the Kent League, winning every game along the way. Our next challenge is a tough 12 team Veteran's tournament in Germany in a month's time. We will be playing against some of the best teams in Europe, all the lads are looking forward to it."

Senior National Cup Final: Herne Bay United 6 - 5 Bury (Played: Saturday 18 July)

Senior National Cup Final winners 2009 Herne Bay United Herne Bay United faced Bury in the Final of the National Cup on Saturday at the Bushfields Centre in Peterborough. United started strongly, moving the ball around well and dominating possession. Bury's defence held firm but with ten minutes gone HBU captain Simon Hosking beat two players, wrong footed the keeper and slotted the ball home to put the reigning Cup holders 1-0 up. Within 20 seconds Neil Austin found the back of the net to make it 2-0. Bury were struggling to contain United, who were moving the ball around well, with some excellent movement off the ball. Three minutes later United scored again; this time Austin and Barker combined well before Barker crossed the ball to the far post for Hosking to score again to make it 3-0. Bury were still battling but it was United on the charge; with eight minutes remaining Brendan Barker netted to make the score 4-0. The game was looking very one sided at this point, but United started to ease off and Bury capitalised scoring two goals in the last five minutes of the half to make the score 4-2 at the break.

The second half was a much more even affair. United started the better and were rewarded when Dendy Hudson scored from close range to make it 5-2 with only 50 seconds gone. Bury continued to battle and their efforts were rewarded when they scored through Darren Willis to make it 5-3 with 16 minutes left. Two minutes later Ricky Jupp scored for Bury to make it 5-4 and Bury were now playing with belief. Two minutes later their comeback was complete when Jack Holmes scored from close range to tie the game at 5-5. United though showed why they are champions as they attacked Bury with renewed vigour. With ten minutes remaining Barker forced his way through the Bury defence and finished well, firing the ball into the top corner of the net to put United 6-5 up. The reigning champions were not going to lose this lead and they successfully held Bury at Bay for the rest of the game.

After the game HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "We made hard work of it, and all credit to Bury, they pushed us all the way, but we did enough to just edge it and the team are delighted with the win. We have won the treble for the second year running and it makes all the hard work worth it. It has been a long hard season and we are all looking forward to having a break for six weeks before it all starts again."

HBU Coach Phil McVey added: "I am pleased with the win, although we were far from our best. Bury gave us a very stiff test but all the lads gave 110% and we dug out the victory. I'm proud of all my players, throughout the whole season they have all remained totally committed, and they deserve all the accolades they get. We have won the treble two years in a row. The player's commitment and team spirit are an example to all. It's not easy getting to the top, it's even harder staying there.

Visit to Peterborough Roller Hockey Club

Saturday 11 July saw the first of hopefully many inter-roller hockey club matches and training days. Sixteen young HBU players who attend the Friday night session, along with their families, headed up the M11 to Peterborough, to join the Peterborough Roller Hockey Club for a really enjoyable afternoon's hockey. There were two under 9 teams. HBU A team was made up of players with a year or mores experience. HBU B were a team of players largely in their first season. The two other teams were made up of under 11's and under 13's.

GAME 1: HBU U9 A 9 - 3 Peterborough Greens. The afternoon started at midday with the first game seeing our under 9's A team securing a 9 - 3 win with goals coming from Oliver Hudson and Joshua Osborne. The score could have been higher if it wasn't for some excellent goal keeping from our Rhys Young, who played half the game for each club due to the absence of a Peterborough keeper. Sian Emslie was very energetic and relentlessly chased every ball! George Daly and Jamie Leonard provided some superb link up play. It was an impressive performance from such a young side, and the comments from the Peterborough coaching staff was how great to see the young players "playing real hockey"!

GAME 2: HBU U13s 1 - 6 Peterborough Minors. The HBU U13's then took on a challenging game against Peterborough Minors; Peterborough were on good form but HBU struggled to find their rhythm and ended with a disappointing defeat. George Koeler, Alice Osborne, Joshua Emslie and Luke Latham worked hard throughout the game and learnt some tough but useful lessons for the future. Guy Osborne and Rhys Young were in goal and showed some excellent goalkeeping skills throughout a pressurised game.

GAME 3: HBU U9s B 2 - 1 Peterborough Orange. For sheer effort and determination this was the game of the day! Very young players from both teams, some as young as 5 on both sides, showing their enthusiasm for the sport. It was hard to believe some players had only put a pair of skates on for the first time a few months ago, and did not look out of place wearing the Club colours with pride! HBU skated well with Alfie Koeler and Jamie Leonard skating superbly and tackling well. The two goals came from George Daly and Noah Latham, and the team's obvious excitement and pride at their first competitive goals was one of the the highlights of the day for spectators.

GAME 4: HBU U11's 4 - 8 Peterborough Minors. This game was on paper likely to be a rout, with Peterborough fielding their strongest under 13 team against a largely inexperienced under 11 HBU side drawn from players that attend the Friday night session. Any doubts were short lived as Nathan Emslie and Charlie Burgess quickly established an excellent understanding in defence, complemented by Max Osborne and David Martindale who were quick to counter attack and displayed some outstanding finishing when they had their chances, each scoring 2 superb goals.

GAMES 5 & 6: HBU U9 A 0 - 0 Peterborough Greens and HBU U9 B 1- 0 Peterborough Orange. These games saw the under 9's play each other again; both teams struggled to score against the challenge of two under 13 goalkeepers. However our fearless George Daly manage to put one past the Peterborough under 13 goalkeeper in the final game. The afternoon ended for the under 9's with a fun penalty competition.

GAME 7: Blues 5 - 1 Yellow. The final game for the older players was a mixed game, with both teams being made up of an equal mix of HBU and Peterborough under 13 and under 11 players. All players enjoyed the chance to play with some new team mates and it was a perfect end to an enjoyable day. HBU have thanked Peterborough for hosting this event, it was a great success and we hope to reciprocate in the future.

Conference Finals - Under 13's

It was the turn of the U13's team on Sunday and this was going to be a much harder day with games against Cottenham and Kings Lynn who had both beaten us during the season with a game against Manchester who were an unfamiliar team. We would have to be at our very best to stand any chance of winning this competition. First up was the game against Cottenham. The start of the game followed the pattern of the U11's with HBU managing to score twice within twenty seconds of the start with a goal from Alex. Cottenham were stunned and the pace of the game increased with the game starting to become more physical. Ashley added two goals after two and five minutes to give HBU a three goal cushion. The game was now end to end with Cottenham trying to find a way into the game. They managed to score eleven minutes in to make it a tense end to the first half with HBU going in 3-1 up at the break. The second half continued in much the way of the first with both teams playing strong and team hockey with chances to score at both ends. HBU were the first to score after six minutes with a goal from Harry. This only inspired Cottenham again but HBU were able to give a bit more comfort with further goals from Ashley after eight and eleven minutes. Even then HBU were still not home and dry. Cottenham were throwing everything at us and if they were able to score a goal or two they would have the momentum to come back at us which has happened in the past. HBU's defence was able to hold firm and as Cottenham pushed they left further gaps at the back which HBU were able to exploit with Alex adding three goals in the last few minutes of the game to give a flattering scoreline to HBU of Cottenham 1 HBU 9.

Next up were Manchester who we had not played before. The game started with HBU pressing but unable to find the net with Manchester also having several opportunities to score. Eventually HBU managed to score with two quick goals from Ashley and Alex after four minutes. The game continued with chances at both ends but another two quick goals from Ashley and Lewis after ten minutes gave the advantage to HBU at halftime being 4-0 up. The second half saw Manchester score first which gave HBU some nervous moments. Alex and Ashley were able to score again but then Manchester scored twice in reply before Ashley scored again to make the game more comfortable after ten minutes. This was an all round team game with Sam, Michael and Katie contributing to the win. Neither team managed to score again and the game finished Manchester 3 HBU 7.

The final game was going to be the most difficult and it was against Kings Lynn who with Cottenham are one of the best teams in the country at this age group. After a very close game with Cottenham which Kings Lynn won by the odd goal it meant the winners of the HBU/Kings Lynn game would be the champions. As one would expect the game started at a frantic pace and this set the tone for the whole game. HBU scored first with Alex finding the net after four minutes. Kings Lynn had to chase the game and were rewarded when they scored after nine minutes. HBU continued to play as they had been all day and were rewarded when Lewis scored late on in the first half to make the score 2-1 to HBU at halftime. The second half was even faster and more frantic than the first with HBU knowing that a one goal lead was not enough and Kings Lynn knowing they had to score. It was another dream start to the half for HBU as Alex scored with thirty seconds to give HBU a two goal cushion. Kings Lynn had no choice and they had to go for broke and were rewarded after three minutes when a speculative shot hit Alex’s skate and rolled into the goal. There was now only one goal in it and it was an end to end game with both sides doing their best to score. Ashley managed to score again for HBU after five minutes to restore the two goal advantage. This still left ten minutes to play and surprisingly neither side managed to score again with both defences holding firm. The final scoreline was HBU 4 Kings Lynn 2.

Given the teams that we played I am delighted, and relieved, that we managed to win all three games. Again special mention goes to the goalkeeper Eddie who had a fantastic day and kept us in all the games. Also a special mention the Katie, Sam and Michael who although may not have played very much are just as an important part of the team and share equally in the team's success.

U13's team: Eddie Mount (GK), Ashley Barton, Harry Rowbotham, Alex Mount, Lewis Greenwood, Michael Gregory, Sam Whiffen and Katie McVey

In summary, this was an excellent weekend for HBU in becoming the Club National Champions of England at both the U11's and U13's age groups. An achievement in which everyone should be proud.

Conference Finals - Under 11's

This weekend saw the U11's and U13's take part in the Conference Finals at Burwell to decide the Club National Champions of England. The U11's were in action on Saturday with the first game against Manchester. The game stared brilliantly for HBU who went 4-0 up within the space of a couple of minutes with two goals from Alex, and one each from Lewis and Sam. The game then settled down after Manchester managed to find some structure to their play with HBU only managing to add one more goal from Michael in the first half to make the score 5-0 to HBU at half time. The second half saw Lewis add to the scoreline seconds from the restart. Manchester regrouped again and managed to keep HBU at bay for some time before David and Michael added two goals apiece before the end of the game to make the final score HBU 10 Manchester 0.

Next up were Cambridge and the start followed the same pattern as the Manchester game with Lewis scoring two early goals within a couple of minutes. HBU continued to dominate with Alex Mount scoring two goals and Sam and Max scoring one each with Cambridge managing one goal in reply to make the half time score Cambridge 1 HBU 6. HBU were able to add another three goals in the second half from Alex with Cambridge adding another to their tally to make the final score Cambridge 2 HBU 9.

Finally HBU played Cottenham. Again it was another brilliant start with Alex scoring twice within the first two minutes which shocked Cottenham. They then settled down and started to ask questions of HBU. Michael added another goal after five minutes but Cottenham pulled one back a couple of minutes later. Alex restored the advantage coming up to half time to make the halftime score HBU 4 Cottenham 1. This was the closest game HBU had been in and they had to play at their best in the second half to ensure the win. HBU pushed from the restart with a goal each from Alex, Lewis and Max within a couple of minutes. This seemed to demoralise Cottenham and they were unable to find any way back into the game. HBU were able to steadily add to their goal tally with a further five goals from Alex and one from Michael before David scored the final goal in the last seconds of the game. The final score was HBU 14 Cottenham 1.

This was an excellent all round team performance and mention must be made of Jarrod who had excellent games making some very good saves and gave the team confidence in front of him. Nathan was also playing his first games at this level although was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet.

U11's team: Jarrod Dyball (GK), Alex Mount, David Martindale, Lewis Greenwood, Michael Gregory, Sam Whiffen, Max Osborne and Nathan Elmslie

Premier League: HBU CSL 4 - 4 Bury (Played: Saturday 13 June)

The HBU CSL team were eagerly anticipating their game against Bury at the Pier on Saturday, especially after losing to them recently 4-3 in the National Cup Qualifiers. Due to both Premier League goal keepers still suffering injury and unable to play, together with two of the main squad players being unavailable, the mood was one of trepidation, but it allowed one or two of the less experienced squad players to participate, as well as their young goal keeper, Joel Carnell, who was again enlisted for this game, only having played in one previous Premier League fixture, last week against our first team.

CSL started the game with all players appearing a little nervous and with Bury pressing the CSL players hard, scoring their first goal after only four minutes of play. However this seemed to spur CSL on, having decided that they would not go down without a fight, and to everyone's surprise and delight, especially with good team play and the goal keeper keeping out many of Bury's numerous attempts on goal, CSL were able to respond with a well worked goal of their own scored by Arran Bowyer. This began a 'tit for tat' feel to the game with the half time score at CSL 3- 4 Bury.

The second half of the game was an excellent display of CSL's renewed confidence both in themselves and in their goalkeeper and he in them, although as we discussed at the break, they knew that Bury would now attempt to press them hard over the whole rink, and we were not disappointed. However, despite CSL believing that their inexperienced goal keeper would tire in the second half, he appeared to grow in stature and Bury were unable to do anything to counter this, despite having a penalty and a direct free hit awarded to them, both being saved. CSL were then given an extra boost when Myles Tichband scored CSL's equaliser. Neither team were going to sit back and accept the draw and both continued to push at both ends but by good defensive play and good goal keeping CSL kept the score to a credible 4-4 draw, with no goals conceded in the second half.

Captain Arran Bowyer said: "We have had some lacklustre results this season but during this game we all played our part fully as a team and all worked well together, a win would have been great but a draw was nearly as rewarding. We have all come away from this game with the bit between our teeth and all the players want to be more successful next season. There is nothing stopping us but ourselves and we all need to train harder, all get fitter and attempt to have all of our squad players available for all the trainings and the games".

Every member of the CSL team couldn't have given more that they did and all played their part in a good team effort. Well done CSL.

Team: Joel Carnell (GK), Arran Bowyer (Cpt) (1), Paul McVey (VCpt) (1), Steve Clarke, Charlie Pughe, Myles Tichband (2), Lee Chestnutt, Sam Rowbotham, Joe King

Premier League: Herne Bay United 5 - 7 Middlesbrough (Played: Saturday 13 June)

Premier League Champions HBU faced Middlesbrough in their final premier league match of the season at the Pier in Saturday night. United had already secured the title but they still wanted to win to maintain their record of winning every home game in the league this season. The fans played their part by creating a great atmosphere. United started well and they had two clear cut chances to score in the first two minutes; however they squandered the opportunities. This cost them as Middlesbrough counter-attacked well. With only three minutes gone the referee awarded a dubious penalty to the visitors; when he first blew for the foul he gave a free-hit outside the box, but on appeal from the Middlesbrough player the ref appeared to change his decision and pointed to the spot. Mike Abelson stepped up and fired the penalty home to make it 0-1. The game then settled down, and for the next ten minutes there were no goals. United kept creating chances but could not find the back off the net; Middlesbrough kept the ball well, and created some good chances of their own. Then with 12 minutes left Marc Rutland found himself unmarked in the box, he finished past a helpless Barton in the United goal to put the northern side 0-2 up. Three minutes later Rutland scored again, he cut in from the left and scored a great volley to make it 0-3. United were now in real trouble, Middlesbrough had the advantage and they knew it. With six minutes left things got worse for United when Mark Radcliffe scored from a yard out to make it 0-4. The reigning champions were not playing well, and their finishing was terrible. They didn't let their heads drop and they were rewarded for their efforts when Dendy Hudson scored to give United a glimmer of hope. A minute later a well worked move was finished by Joe Singleton to make it 2-4. United were beginning to get back into the game. However they couldn't sustain the pressure and it was Middlesbrough who scored next with another volley, this time it was Peter Lonsdale who scored from a tight angle to make the halftime score 2-5.

United came out for the second half determined to put things right. Four minutes into the half Chris Espejo scored after some good work from Brendan Barker to make it 3-5. United continued to press Middlesbrough, but the visitors were matching them in all departments. Then with 14 minutes remaining United captain Simon Hosking pulled another goal back to make it 4-5; within a minute he had scored again to level the score at 5-5. Having got back to level pegging, United were now favourites to go on and win the game. No one had told Middlesbrough this and with five minutes remaining the referee gave another dubious penalty, as Middlesbrough's Ableson went down in the box following a challenge from Barker. The United player had clearly played the ball first, but the ref pointed to the spot. Ableson dusted himself off, and scored from the spot to put the northern side back in front 5-6. United now had no choice but to take risks in defence to try and win the ball back. Middlesbrough capitalised when, with four minutes left Ableson scored his third of the game to put the game out of reach. There were no more goals and Middlesbrough ran out 5-7 winners.

Middlesbrough captain John Jones said after the game: "The game was a classic. Although HBU had already sealed the title this was our final opportunity to regain some pride and that we did. The game was action packed from start to finish with both teams scoring some well worked team goals, but on this occasion we just managed to pip HBU to the three points. The club would like to thank HBU for their excellent hospitality, hopefully we can repay the compliment."

HBU manager Phil McVey said: "Middlesbrough deserved the victory, they were better than us tonight. All of the players are disappointed with the way we played. We did not play well, our team game was poor, our passing was poor, and our finishing was worse than poor. We created countless chances but we failed to take them. Middlesbrough were clinical in front of goal and that was the difference. I am proud of what we have achieved this season, we have won the league cup and the Premier League, and we are in the final of the National cup. However you are only as good as your last game, and on that basis we are not good. We have one game left this season; we play Bury in the National Cup final in a month's time, the player have a chance to put things right and end the season on a high. Our objectives going into the season were to win every domestic competition we entered. So far we have won two out of two, if we can make it three out of three this game will be forgotten about. I know we can do it, I have every faith in the players and their abilities."

HBU Captain Simon Hosking added: "We were not good tonight, and the Manager made it clear he expects better from us. What is annoying is we have to wait a month to put things right, the lads would love to be able to play the game again right now, we all know we can do better."

HBU team: Dan Barton (GK), Chris Espejo (1), Brendan Barker, Simon Hosking (2), Dendy Hudson (1), Joe Singleton (1), Myles Barker, Matt Barton, Karl Smith, (Manager: Phil McVey)

Under 11 and Under 13 Conference Play-Offs

Three teams travelled to Soham on Sunday to compete in the under 11 and under 13 play-offs for the National Roller Hockey Association's Conference. The first game saw the under 13's Adders and Cobras facing each other in an exciting match. the Adders had the best of the possession in the first half but a stong Cobra defence meant that the half time scores were equal at 0-0. The Cobras worked more scoring chances in the second half but the Adders scored twice through Kier Maeers and then Luke Latham added a third to run out 3-0 winners.

Next it was the turn of the under 11's Pythons who played Plymouth. The team created numerous chances during the first half but an on-form Plymouth keeper and the goal-frame kept out everything apart from one shot from Jamie McVey. The Pythons were again the dominant team in the second half and with two goals from Tom Barton and one from Josh Butcher were able to win the game although Plymouth got a consolation goal. Final score HBU Pythons 4-1 Plymouth.

HBU Cobras played Bury in the next under 13's match and despite putting in a spirited display were unable to stop the onslaught of goals from their strong opponents. Final score Bury 12-0 HBU Cobras.

The Cobras were in action again against Kings Lynn. Once more they played the game mostly in defence but were able to work a number of chances of their own and the team had given three promising performances in their first tournament at this level. Final score Kings Lynn 16-0 HBU Cobras.

HBU Adders were on the rink next for their game against Bury. Although Bury took an early lead goals from Latham and Maeers put Adders into the lead where they stayed until just before half time when Bury claimed an equaliser. The second half was full of chances for both teams but the scores remained the same until three minutes to go when Max Osborne reclaimed the Adders' lead only for Bury to equalise again 30 seconds later. A frantic final few minutes followed with Bury grabbing the winner by slotting home a penalty. Final score Bury 4-3 HBU Adders.

Next it was the turn of the Pythons again who faced Cottenham in the deciding match for the under 11's tournament, with the winner going through to finals of the competition. The teams were evenly matched but Cottenham created more goal-scoring chances although none found the net until they scored two in the last five minutes of the first half. They added another straight after the restart and although the Pythons had plenty of opportunities they were unable to score until Barton and McVey each netted in the last 90 seconds of the game. Unfortunately they were unable to add to these so lost 2-3 with Cottenham progressing to the finals.

The Adders' last game was against Kings Lynn. The lack of substitutes was taking it's toll but the team continued to play well. Kings Lynn had scored seven goals with four minutes remaining in the first half when rain stopped play; earlier heavy downpours had created several leaks in the roof and this match and the other two that should have followed were abandoned. Adders conceded the match and Kings Lynn and Bury will play their deciding match at a later date.

Teams:
HBU Adders: Connor Botting, Luke Latham, Kier Maeers, Guy Osborne, Max Osborne, Alice Osborne-Luck

HBU Cobras: Charlie Burgess, Britany Dyball, Jarod Dyball, Josh Emslie, Nathan Emslie, George Kohler, David Martindale

HBU Pythons: Tom Barton, Connor Botting, Josh Butcher, Luca Commentucci, Britany Dyball, Jamie McVey, Rhys Young

Premier League: HBU CSL 3 - 16 Herne Bay United (Played: Wednesday 3 June)

CSL were very much looking forward to this game, however, as it transpired, without two of it's main squad players and both of the Premier League goal keepers who are both injured. But we always knew that we would be on the 'back foot' competing against the 2009 Premier League winners. Our young goal keeper, enlisted for this game, had never played in a Premier League game, let alone the complete game, as we had no substitute goal keeper. We were also fielding some of our U17 players. However the game commenced as anticipated but to everyone's surprise and delight our young Goalkeeper kept out the majority of HBU's initial attempts on goal and it took HBU nearly eight minutes to score their first. CSL had a considerable number of shots on HBU's goal, but their keeper also played well in keeping these out of the net. We entered half time CSL 0-6 HBU, this score against the main squad players of HBU.

The second half was a similar affair but our goalkeeper was beginning to tire, as were our players. This became evident when HBU scored within the first couple of minutes, followed by two further goals. But CSL responded with their own goal, but a further goal from HBU put the game beyond CSL's reach. The only option now was for CSL to maintain a limited defence and attempt to push forward, this resulted in us having chances to score which we were unable to convert, other than our two quick goals within the last two minutes, but we knew that this strategy would also open us up to counter attacks, of which there were many.

The most rewarding aspect of the second half was our young players demonstrating that they were able, in part, to out skate and physically challenge the HBU players, but without yet being as experienced. But I am convinced that this will come and our Goalkeeper was also a revelation. However the experience for the team was invaluable, as originally anticipated, with the game being enjoyed by all the CSL players.

Premier League: HBU CSL 3 - 16 Herne Bay United (Played: Wednesday 3 June)

Herne Bay United moved further ahead at the top of the Premier League with a comprehensive victory over the club's second team CSL. The game started with HBU dominating possession, although it was CSL who had the better chances. However it did not take long for HBU to assert themselves, and three goals from captain Simon Hosking in a five minute period put HBU 3-0 up half way through the first half. HBU continued to press CSL all over the rink and although CSL created a few chances themselves they could not break through HBU's defence. Three further goals, two from Dendy Hudson and another from Hosking, put HBU 6-0 up at half time.

HBU manager Phil McVey instructed his players to play a tighter defence in the second half to draw the CSL players forward, to give his team extra space in attack. The change of tactics worked almost immediately with HBU scoring three goals in the first two minutes of the half, Brendan Barker, Matt Barton and Myles Barker all scoring. CSL continued to battle hard and they were rewarded with a goal from veteran Paul McVey to make the score 9-1 with 20 minutes remaining. Not happy at conceding HBU immediately redoubled their efforts in attack, scoring three more goals in a minute, two from Brendan Barker, one from Neil Austin, to make the score 12-1. As both sets of players began to tire gaps started appearing and again it was the reigning champions who capitalised, Brendan Barker and Hosking scored in quick succession to make it 14-1. Both teams continued to create chances and the game ended with a glut of goals, both teams scored twice in the last two minutes of the match to make the final score 16-3.

Following the match HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "Although we have already won the league, we still wanted to put on a good performance. We are a little disappointed with the way we played tonight, we have played much better this season, but the result was never in doubt. We now have only two games left, our last remaining League game against Middlesbrough at the Pier on 13 June, and the Cup Final against Bury on 18 July. We want to win both of these. Middlesbrough should be a tough match, but we want to put on our best performance of the year, our fans deserve that for all the help and support they have given us all season."

HBU Coach/Manager Phil McVey added: "We didn't play our best hockey tonight, maybe that is a result of already having secured the title last Saturday. The lads know they need to up their game again, we have two tough games left, and they are both 'must win' games. The Middlesbrough Leaague game is important because the players want to perform for our fans, and the Cup Final because having won the treble last season, we can now win it again this year. I would like to congratulate my players on their professional attitude, it takes a lot of hard work and commitment to maintain our position as the best team in the country. If you look at some of our results this year we have come through some incredibly tight games, it has been difficult at times, but myself and the players have all pulled together to get the results we needed. The players know the season is not over yet, and hopefully we have kept our best performances till last."

Premier League: Sheffield 4 - 25 Herne Bay United (Played: Saturday 30 May)

On Saturday 30 May Herne Bay United clinched the Premier League title with a convincing win over Sheffield at Sheffield. United started strongly with Barker netting his first after just two minutes. However, Sheffield equalized immediately. United's confidence was knocked but soon restored when Karl Smith put United back in the lead less than a minute later. This hectic start was the beginning of an onslaught from an in-form United side looking determined to put the league beyond question with a goal almost every two minutes.

The final tally to United was 25 with Sheffield scoring just four in reply. The United goals were spread around the team with Karl Smith scoring six to double his season tally and Brendan Barker netting 11. Manager Phil McVey said: "It's great to get the league title settled and with a good team performance away, but we have two games left to play and we want to make the campaign even more convincing with wins in these final matches."

United will be playing a local derby against HBU CSL on Wednesday night at the Pier Pavilion and the match on 13 June should be a thriller with opponents Middlesbrough looking to pick up some revenge in consolation for United dumping them out of the Cup in the semi-final two weeks ago.

The second half began with the Adders stretching their lead through Max Osborne and the score remained 4-1 until the final five minutes of the game when a concerted effort from the Cobras saw them pull back two goals through George Kohler and Emslie before Adam Bowron snatched the equailser with five seconds remaining. National Cup Semi Final: Herne Bay United 8 - 7 Middlesbrough

Herne Bay United played Middlesbrough in the semi final of the National Cup on Sunday morning and United expected a difficult game but what they got was a classic cup game scenario and soon found themselves scrapping for the win. United started well building, controlling the game for the first five minutes but Middlesbrough scored first from a weak unexpected shot. United's annoyance showed from this and the play for United became frustrated. United piled on the pressure with chance after chance being saved or off target, but it was Karl Smith who finished in the top corner from a worked team goal from team mate Brendan Barker. Again Middlesbrough took a shock lead with United's defence faltering, Middlesbrough's confidence was growing and shortly their third came and they had the unsuspecting lead of 1-3 over United. United regrouped and scored four magnificent goals; two from Neil Austin and one from Dendy Hudson and now it looked as if United would regain their usual control. Unfortunately a defensive error led to Middlesbrough bringing the score back to 5-4 and with much needed confidence they were soon level leaving the score 5-5 at half time.

The second half was another closely fought battle with Middlesbrough again taking the initiative with an early goal. United's Neil Austin took a well placed slap shot to level the scores almost immediately, but again it was Middlesbrough who refused to relinquish the fight scoring their seventh of the game and taking the lead for the fourth time. United continued to work hard and players' tiredness was showing but United's hero Neil Austin, and without doubt man-of-the-match, scored a further three times scoring his fifth goal two minutes from time giving United the lead and a place in the final.

Captain Simon Hosking was happy with the win: "We did well to keep coming back into the game and finally taking the win. Today we scored five of our best team goals and with a match winning performance from Neil Austin we showed our resilience to be beaten and that even after all these years we still have the passion to fight for the win."

United have three games left in the premier league needing three points out of the remaining nine to secure the title and will be playing in the National cup final against either Bury or Letchworth.

Premier League: Herne Bay United 9 - 1 Bury (Played: Sunday 9 May)

Herne Bay United stretched their lead at the top of the National Premier League with a comprehensive 9-1 victory over old rivals Bury St Edmunds. United started the game in control, moving the ball well and dominating possession. Three minutes in, Neil Austin flighted a long pass into the Bury penalty area for teammate Chris Espejo who slotted the ball home on the volley. United continued to pass the ball well and probe for weaknesses in the Bury defence. Five minutes later United captain Simon Hosking squared the ball to Austin who rolled the ball into an empty net to make it 2-0. Bury continued to battle in defence, and play counter attack hockey. They were rewarded for their efforts when with 12 minutes left in the half, they scored from a free hit from outside the box to make it 2-1. United continued to dominate the play and with six minutes left in the half they restored their two goal lead when Austin scored to make it 3-1. Bury were now struggling to mount any meaningful attacks, and any shots they did have were saved by an inform Dan Barton in United's net. The halftime score was 3-1 to United.

The second half continued the same as the first had ended. United had all the possession and Bury tried to hit them on the break. It was only a matter of time before United converted their dominance into goals, and with 20 minutes left in the match Brendan Barker scored with a long range drive that found the top corner to make it 4-1. Bury were now becoming stretched at the back, and as their legs began to tire Barker scored from close range to make it 5-1 with 12 minutes remaining. Bury were now a spent force and when Dendy Hudson made it 6-1 the game was effectively over as a contest. United did not let up though, and three goals in the final four minutes gave united a well deserved 9-1 victory.

At the same time as this game was being played title challengers Middlesbrough and Grimsby were facing each other; both sides had to win to keep the pressure on United. They drew 8-8 which meant both sides slipped further behind but not quite out of the race for the title.

After the game captain Simon Hosking said: "We are pleased with the win, it moves us one game closer to retaining our title. We've got three games remaining, our last being against Middlesbrough, so we know we haven't won it yet."

Manager Phil McVey added: "Every game is like a cup final at this stage of the season, the lads know what they have to do, if we win our next two matches against Sheffield and CSL we will be champions again. I will accept nothing less than victories in those two games. We can not allow complacency to creep in, we haven't won it yet".

Premier League: Herne Bay United 23 - 3 Sheffield (Played: Sunday 12 April)

On Easter Sunday morning, United had an easier match against bottom of the table Sheffield; the result was never in doubt as United scored their first of the game in 42 seconds, and were 10-2 ahead at halftime. Some of Sheffield players seemed more concerned about fouling their opponents than playing hockey. The second half was no different as United again dominated play and the goal scoring running out eventual winners 23-3.

Afterwards HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "The Grimsby result was hugely important to us, having lost to them at their place it was vital we won. This keeps us on track for the title and it has effectively ended their title hopes."

Player Manager Phil McVey added: "I'm extremely pleased with the six points this weekend, we've gone top of league for the first time this season. Our next game is a tough match at home against Bury on Saturday 9 May. At this stage of the season every game is a cup final; we have four matches left and they are all must win games."

Premier League: Herne Bay United 9 - 5 Grimsby (Played: Saturday 11 April)

The reigning champions went top of league for the first time this weekend, and effectively ended Grimsby's challenge for the title. Having lost to Grimsby earlier in the season, HBU knew they had to win, because if the teams ended up tied on points, the championship would then go on the result between to the two teams. United went at Grimsby right from the start, within two minutes captain Simon Hosking beat two players before coolly rounding the keeper and stroking the ball home into an empty net to make it 1-0. United went 2-0 up a few minutes later, this time it was Brendan Barker who finished from the edge of the box. Grimsby were clearly stunned by the early goals; United capitalised on their opponents' indecision when a minute later Hosking took the ball round the back of the goal and as he came out the other side he flicked the ball up and expertly volleyed the ball into the far corner of the goal to make it 3-0. Seeing their season fall apart before their eyes Grimsby rallied and with 14 minutes remaining Stephen Hancock fired a long range effort which went through a crowd of players before nestling in the bottom corner past an unsighted Dan Barton in the United net to make it 3-1. Grimsby could not sustain their attack, and United took control of the game again, moving the ball around well and restricting Grimsby to long range shots. With eight minutes to go Hosking scored his third of the game to put United 4-1 ahead. Grimsby were determined to put up a fight and with three minutes left in the half Andrew Simms scrambled the ball home to make the halftime score 4-2.

The second half saw United continue to dominate the play; five minutes in Barker fired the ball into the top left hand corner of the goal to make it 5-2. Grimsby continued to battle and with 17 minutes remaining Marc Waddingham made the score 5-3 to keep them in the game. Their hopes of turning it around were short lived as Barker went straight down their end and scored to restore United's three goal cushion (6-3). With time running out Grimsby had to push for goals, Simms did manage to pull one back (6-4) but it was not enough, as United continued to dominate the play and the chances. Three more goals in quick succession from Barker, Hosking and Austin put the result beyond doubt, and although Grimsby did manage to score with eight seconds left on the clock, it was United who ran out comfortable winners 9-5.

ECRHA Under 11's

Herne Bay United's Under 11's travelled to Kings Lynn on Saturday for their final Eastern Counties tournament of the season. Their first game was against Kings Lynn B and a good start to the match saw them take the lead through David Martindale. The team had the majority of possession and, although Kings Lynn equalised, United retook the lead through Connor Botting near the end of the half. Kings Lynn equalised again early in the second half but Botting regained United's lead soon after. Despite continued pressure on the Kings Lynn goal it was their opponents who managed to exploit a weakening of the United defence scoring another five goals. Final score Kings Lynn B 7-3 HBU.

The team's next match was against Norwich who took the lead within 30 seconds. This game saw United with much of the possession and demonstrating some good team play which saw Martindale equalise after five minutes. Despite their hard work, Norwich tool the lead shortly before the break. The second half saw the team working positively to create numerous chances with Martindale completing a hat-trick. Norwich were also able to add two more defeating United 4-3.

The next game saw United facing Cottenham, mostly in defence for the first part of the match. Cottenham scored twice before United picked up their game and began to break against the Cottenham goal. Some excellent passing gave Martindale another goal only for Cottenham to extend their lead again before half time. The second half saw United enjoying more possession and, although Cottenham scored four more, United also added to their total through Botting, Luca Commentucci and Martindale. Final score HBU 4-7 Cottenham.

The final game was against Kings Lynn A. United took an early lead through Charlie Botting although this was soon equalised by Kings Lynn. United dominated the game continually attacking their opponents' goal, but were unable to score until the final two minutes when Connor Botting gave them the half time lead. The second half was end to end with United pushing forward in attack as well as proving strong in defence. Martindale stretched their lead with two minutes on the clock alnd although Kings Lynn scored 30 seconds later United had done enough to secure a 3-2 victory.

These results keep the team in 5th place in the league although the results of another tournament next month may affect their final placing.

ECRHA Under 13's

HBU Adders and Vipers travelled to Soham for the final Eastern Counties under 13's tournament of the season on Saturday. Having already won the league the Vipers were playing as a guest team at this tournament but they were still determined to put in good performances in each game. Their first match was against the Adders and they took an early lead through Alex Mount and Ashley Barton. The Vipers continued to dominate leaving the Adders having to work hard in defence. Although they managed a couple of breaks the Vipers stormed to an 8-0 half time lead through three further goals from Mount, another from Barton and one from Harry Rowbotham. The second half saw the Adders making more chances and their defence was stronger, but two more goals from Barton, another for Mount and one for Michael Gregory gave the Vipers a 12-0 victory.

The Vipers second match was against Cottenham, the only team to beat them at the previous tournament. However, their opponents were not to get the better of them this time with the Vipers enjoying most of the possession with keeper Eddie Mount having little to do. First half goals from Barton and Mount gave the Vipers a 2-0 lead that didn't reflect the run of play. Barton scored twice in a more open second half and additional goals from Mount and Gregory gave the Vipers a 6-0 win.

The final Vipers match was against Bury, an entertaining match with end to end play throughout. Two apiece for Barton and Mount and one for Gregory took the Vipers to a 5-2 half time lead. A second half hat-trick for Barton, two for Mount and one for Lewis Greenwood with only two in reply for Bury concluded an 11-4 win.

As well as their clubmates the Adders also played Bury who opened up a 5-0 half time lead despite some good defence and a number of chances for the Adders. The second half saw the team more positive in attack and some good teamwork led to goals from Kier Maeers and Max Osborne. However, Bury were able to add three more to their total and won the game 8-2.

Next the Adders faced Kings Lynn who scored in the opening seconds of the game. Despite the early setback the Adders played well and equalised through Maeers and were also able to create a number of other chances. Unfortunately Kings Lynn were able to score three goals early in the second half although Maeers slotted home a penalty to bring the Adders back into the game. Despite a good performance from the team their opponents scored twice more to defeat the Adders 6-2.

The Adders' final game was against Cottenham. Some good defence work saw the second-placed team restricted to two goals during the first half while the Adders worked a number of scoring opportunities for themselves. Tiredness seemed to affect the team in the second half and Cottenham were able to capitilise on this, scoring ten more to inflict a 12-0 defeat.

Teams:
Vipers: Ashley Barton, Lewis Greenwood, Michael Gregory, Katie McVey, Alex Mount, Eddie Mount, Harry Rowbotham, Sam Whiffen

Adders: Charlie Botting, Connor Botting, Luke Latham, Kier Maeers, Guy Osborne, Max Osborne, Alice Osborne-Luck, Joe Upton

European League: Herne Bay United 4 - 7 Reus Deportiu (Played: Saturday 14 March)

Herne Bay United faced Spanish stars Reus Deportiu on Saturday night in their final game of the group stages of the European Champions' League at the Pier Pavilion. Having lost to Reus 19-0 when they played away, everyone was expecting a similar result again. HBU had other ideas, and an almost sell-out crowd witnessed one of the best performances ever seen by an English side. The game started with Reus dominating the play, the professional side moved the ball around effortlessly. United however, were resolute in defence and Reus could not find a way through. The more they pushed forward the more they left themselves exposed at the back. United weathered the early storm, and then won a free hit near the half way line. They then carried out a set play from the free hit, resulting in Brendan Barker firing an unstoppable slap shot into the top corner of the net to make it 1-0 with 19 minutes remaining on the clock. Reus continued to dominate play, but United were causing them problems the whole time. Reus continued to push for the equaliser, but United were equal to everything Reus threw at them. The Spanish side were becoming increasingly frustrated, then with 12 minutes to go, Reus' three man attack broke down, and United's Joe Singleton capitalised sprinting the length of the rink before squaring the ball to Neil Austin, who hit it first time past a helpless keeper to make to 2-0 to the English Champions. The noise of the crowd was deafening, Reus knew they were in a real match, and they'd have to play at their best if they were to win. With nine minutes remaining the German ref's awarded a penalty to the visitors. The Spanish player coolly slotted the ball home to make it 2-1. United manager Phil McVey kept swapping his players to ensure they didn't tire towards the end of the half. Although United created two more golden opportunites they failed to put them away. Reus however took their chances, with two minutes left on the clock Pedro Gil scored from close range to make the game 2-2 at halftime.

Reus were obviously given a rocket from their coach at half time, because in the opening minute of the second half they score twice to make it 2-4. This would normally be the signal for the flood gates to open and they would go on to score 15 or 20. However United were determined not to let that happen. Three minutes later Barker scored from behind the goal by hitting the ball against the defender's legs into the goal to make it 3-4. That scoreline worried Reus and they redoubled their efforts in attack, and scored two goals in a minute to make it 3-6 with 20 minutes left in the half. United though only had one thing in mind, and that was scoring, for the next ten minutes they drew Reus in and then counter-attacked time and time again. If not for a combination of crossbar and post and some fine saves from the Spanish keeper United would be back on level terms. Then with seven minutes left Dendy Hudson found himself in space and he struck a fierce shot into the top corner of the net to make it 4-6. United now believed they could get back level with their professional counterparts, and continued to attack with everything they had. Unfortunately this left gaps at the back and with two minutes left Reus scored again to make it 4-7. At the final whistle the crowd stood up as one to cheer their local side. The English amateur side had come close to causing one of the biggest upsets ever seen.

Following the game captain Simon Hosking said: "That was an unbelievable match, the moment we scored we all thought, hang on we can do this. The crowd were amazing from start to finish. After our last two games in the competition where we had conceded 31 and scored none, we had promised our fans a performance. We are delighted we managed it. Every single one of our players was outstanding tonight. This is why we play in the Champions' League, we almost pulled of a result against one of the top three or four teams in the world. Not bad for a team that trains two hours a week."

Manager Phil McVey added: "I am so proud of what we achieved tonight. We pushed them all the way. The major difference in tonight's performance from our previous ones was tonight we played with belief. It wasn't about our opponents it was about us and our fans. Reus players are professional, very well paid and train for three hours everyday, we train for two hours a week, but that didn't matter tonight. They all followed my instructions, they played with discipline and passion. On behalf of the team I would like to thank our fans, sponsors and all those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this European campaign a success. My attention now turns to the National Premier League, and the National Cup."

Team: Dan Barton (GK), Neil Austin (1), Brendan Barker (2), Simon Hosking (capt), Dendy Hudson (1), Karl Smith, Joe Singleton, Chris Espejo, Myles Barker, David Beeson (GK)

Message from captain Simon Hosking - "To everyone who has been involved in and come and watched our European champions' league campaigns over the last two years. I would like to say thank you to all of you, the support has been fantasic at the pier. It has been an honour to play in front of you all, it makes it so enjoyable to play when the support is so good and I know the rest of the team will agree that it felt so good to be able to finish the past two years on such a great game, 7 - 4 to one of the best teams in the world, what a result.

"I would also like to say thank you to everyone who has helped organise things behind the scenes; lots of work has to go on to make the matches at the pier even take place so once again thanks to everyone and don't forget we have some great games coming up in the Premier League, it would be great to see you all there."

European League Pre-matches

Herne Bay United's under 13 players were pitted against each other as two evenly matched teams contested an entertaining demonstration match before the European League game on Saturday. The first half play was end to end with plenty of chances for both teams to score. David Martindale opened the scoring for the Quadrants but Luke Latham and George Kohler gave the lead to Yellows before Connor Botting and Kier Maeers put the Quadrants back in front for a 3-2 lead at half time. The pace increased during the second half with more end-to-end action and good defence from both teams. Two goals for Alex Mount put the Yellows in the lead again and with the Quadrants unable to add to their score the result was Yellows 4-3 Quadrants.

Teams:
Yellows: Charlie Botting, George Kohler, Luke Latham, Matthew Longley, Alex Mount, Guy Osborne, Alice Osborne-Luck, Harry Rowbotham, Joe Upton

Premier League: HBU CSL 5 - 7 Manchester (Played: Saturday 7 March)

CSL knew that this meeting was going to be a tough one and did not want it to be a repeat of the debacle when CSL visited Manchester in November '08. However the team felt more confident that they could provide Manchester with a good strong game, especially under the auspices of two first class ref's, Dave White and Steve Taylor. The game commenced in the way it was anticipated with Manchester passing the ball and moving well, however CSL were able to compete at the same level and maintained their structure in both defence and attack. With good ball control and well worked passing resulted in the first goal being scored after just four minutes by Charlie Pughe with a flick shot from a well placed pass by the captain Joe Fidock. However within two minutes Manchester had drawn level. Play continued at a high rate with a second goal from Charlie Pughe, again assisted by Joe Fidock, and this was added to three minutes later by an individual effort by Myles Tichband with a first time backhand shot into the goal giving the keeper no chance to react. The see-sawing of goals continued with Manchester scoring two further goals within the space of two minutes, but with two minutes of the first half to go, Myles Tichband scored his second goal of the game resulting from collecting an excellent pass delivered by Lee Chestnutt. Half time score CSL 4–3 Manchester.

The second half began well enough but tired legs were beginning to tell, and during a five minute period of poor defensive play by CSL, Manchester scored three further goals. After re-grouping during a time out, it was another twelve minutes before Manchester scored, their final goal of the game, with six minutes left on the clock. CSL were now 4-7 down and were unable to do anything else other than to keep pushing the game over the whole of the rink. This play was fatiguing for both teams, with Manchester attempting to maintain possession of the ball and CSL determined not to let them. This resulted in a very physical confrontation for the last five minutes of the game with the showing of equal cards to both teams. However the effort paid off, in part for CSL as in the last minute of the game Charlie Pughe collected the ball from a well placed pass, pulling the ball around the keeper and pushing it into the goal behind him, scoring his hat trick. The game finished CSL 5-7 Manchester.

The captain Joe Fidock remarked: "It was a good game, with good passing and well structured hockey played by both teams, apart from the last five minutes, which was a little ragged. However we showed that we are able to compete with the best, with Manchester currently being top of the league."

HBU's second game of the weekend was against title rivals Manchester. This was always going to be a tough test, as the Manchester side included four foreign players, all of whom are technically very good. The game was a perfect example of how roller hockey should be played, with two teams who were very even in all departments. The first half ebbed and flowed, with both sides moving the ball around well, with neither side being able to breakdown their opponents defence. Then finally with two minutes remaining in the half Manchester's Steve Manford latched on to a bobbling ball and fired home from close range to make it 0-1. The goal spurred United into action, and they came at Manchester with renewed vigour. Within a minute United had equalised; Sam Jackson beat two players before squaring the ball to Joe Singleton who scored with a well taken first time shot to send the teams in level at the break.

At half time United coach Phil McVey changed the defensive tactics, he instructed his players to man mark Manchester's Spanish play maker Jamie Lobon to stop Manchester passing to him. The second half began with both teams creating chances. It was Manchester who scored first; Labon lost his marker and scored from close range to put Manchester 1-2 up with 20 minutes remaining. United did not panic, slowly the home side were beginning to get on top, McVey had been rotating his players throughout, whilst Manchester played the same four out players the whole game. Gaps were appearing in the Manchester defence. With 17 minutes remaining Dendy Hudson scored after some fine work from Karl Smith to tie the game at 2-2. McVey then brought Brendan Barker back into the action. This paid dividends immediately as Barker received the ball, beat two and smashed it home to make it 3-2 with 15 minutes left. Manchester were not giving up and United's tactic of man marking Lobon was limiting their opponents' attacks. However with 11 minutes remaining Lobon again broke free and scored from long range to bring Manchester level at 3-3. The visitors now believed they might win this game, United had to dig in again. HBU kept their heads, passing the ball around well, with eight minutes remaining they were rewarded when Barker scored again to make it 4-3 to the champions. A tired Manchester now had to press United, this tactic left holes in their defence which United capitalised on, captain Simon Hosking scored with three minutes left in the match to make it 5-3 and secure a hard fought victory.

After the match Manchester Coach Paul Colton said: "That is best game of roller hockey I have been involved in for years. Both teams played some lovely stuff, unfortunately HBU played better than us and they deserved the win." HBU capt Simon Hosking said: "This was a massive weekend for us, ok we expected to beat the Bay, but we always knew Manchester were going to be tough. The team performed on Sunday, from the start of the match to the very end. Everyone played their part, and that is why we came out winners. We needed every player to step up their game and play for each other, and they did. We are pleased to get the two wins. Now we look forward to our last ever Champions League match next Saturday, against the Spanish giants Reus."

HBU Coach Phil McVey added: "I am very pleased with our two performances this weekend. We had to play in completely different styles in both matches. Saturday night was all about static play with lots of passes, whereas Sunday was all about players' movements, and trying to create gaps in the opponents' defences. I changed our defensive tactics at halftime against Manchester, and the change worked. I'd like to congratulate my team for their disciplined performances in both games. The lads know that it doesn't matter if you play two minutes or the whole game, you have to give everything you've got for your teammates and the club. Every player played their part over the weekend, we now look forward to Reus at the Pier on Saturday night. We want to bring our current form into that match, I know all the players can't wait. We really want to put on a show for our fans."

Premier League: Herne Bay United 16 - 3 Herne Bay (Played: Saturday 7 March)

HBU faced a big weekend in the Premier League last weekend as they had to play local rivals Herne Bay and title challengers Manchester at the Pier on Saturday night and Sunday morning. The first match was a derby match, against a Herne Bay side, who have been improving since the signing of their new Portugese coach. HBU were determined to put the pressure on them right from the start. This tactic paid off and they went into a 2-0 lead within 90 seconds. The game then settled down, HBU had 90% of the possession as Herne Bay played a tight defence and then hoping to catch United on the break. This tactic did not work and at half-time HBU were winning 6-0.

The second half was exactly the same as the first, United scoring two in the opening 90 seconds, and although Herne Bay did manage to score three goals through David Todd, the result was never in doubt, and United ran out comfortable 16-3 winners.

Team: David Garlick(GK), Garrett Priestley(GK), Neil Austin (3), Brendan Barker(5), Simon Hosking(5) capt, Dendy Hudson(2), Karl Smith, Joe Singleton (1), Matt Barton, Myles Barker.

ECRHA Under 11's

Due to prior commitments it was a depleted Herne Bay United Under 11's team that travelled to Burwell on Saturday to play in the Eastern Counties league. Their first game was against Ely and United were forced to defend from the start. Ely opened the scoring and despite some good tackling from United, netted twice more in the first five minutes. United worked a few breaks into the Ely half but were unable to score, although their defence prevented Ely extending their lead. Their opponents scored from the start of the second half and although United had more chances they were unable to finish. Ely added two more goals running out 6-0 winners.

United then met Norwich who scored in the opening seconds of the game. However, United pushed forward and equalised through Charley Bassom with Connor Botting adding two more soon after. As the game developed United created more chances although the first half ended with the score still 3-1 in United's favour, thanks in part to a penalty save by Jarod Dyball. Again United conceded a goal in the opening of the second half although Connor Botting immediately completed his hat-trick. However, Norwich then levelled the scores within a minute through two quick goals as United's defences slipped. The game became end-to-end with many chances for both teams. Connor Botting scored his fourth for United to retake the lead only for Norwich to equalise again. Charlie Botting then put United back in front but as the team pressed to add to this total, Norwich were able to capitalise on the lack of defence and scored three times in an exciting final three minutes. Final score Norwich 8-6 HBU although as the Norwich team had an over-age player the match was deemed friendly and United are awarded a 9-0 win.

United then faced league leaders Cambridge who have yet to lose a match. Although going into the game as the underdogs, it was United who went in front through Connor Botting although Cambridge equalised a short time later. Jarod Dyball saved his second penalty of the day before Cambridge upped the pressure and scored five goals in two minutes leaving United trailing 6-1 at the break. Cambridge scored early in the second half before Connor Botting scored his second with the game opening up to give both teams the opportunity to break for their opponent's goal. Cambridge scored their final goal three minutes from the end and although Connor Botting completed his second hat-trick United could do no more. Final score Cambridge 8-3 HBU.

The results leave United in 5th place in the league and the team travels to Kings Lynn for their final tournament next month.

Team: Charley Bassom, Charlie Botting, Connor Botting, Luca Commentucci, Britany Dyball, Jarod Dyball

Weekend match news

All three local sides are in action at the Pier Pavilion in the Premier league this weekend. HBU CSL take on top of table Manchester on Saturday night at 7.30pm, followed immediately afterwards by local rivals Herne Bay v HBU. The Sunday morning at 11am HBU take on Manchester in what could be a title deciding game.

CSL captain Joe Fidock said: "We are now getting to the exciting part of the season. If we can win against Manchester we can move into the top three of the league. The lads are raring to go, Saturday night's game should be a thrilling one to watch."

Immediately following that game is a local derby; bottom of the table Herne Bay take on current champions HBU. Herne Bay have very recently brought on board a top international coach from Portugal. Under him they are making huge strides, and have designs on winning the league within three years. They are determined to make a start on that journey on Saturday night. Bay captain Peter Taylor said; "Everyone in the club is very excited, our future looks bright, the new coach is making a massive difference, we are improving every time we step on the floor. We know what we need to do on Saturday, we want to show the hockey world we are a force to be contend with, and a win against the champions will do just that."

HBU have the toughest weekend playing Herne Bay on Saturday night and Manchester Sunday morning. HBU player/manager Phil McVey said: "Every game is important from now on till the end of the season. We have a reborn Bay side on Saturday, we can't afford to slip up in that one, and then on Sunday we have title challengers Manchester. They have been sitting at the top of the table for virtually the whole season, that's where we want to be, the only way of being number one is by beating number one. If we win both our games this weekend we go top. That's exactly what we want to do."

If this weekend isn't pressure enough, HBU have their final European Champions league game the following Saturday (14 March) against Spanish giants – Reus. In what may turn out to be HBU's last champion's league appearance the pressure is on for them to produce the best performance they have ever produced to sign off in front of their loyal supporters. HBU President Ron Barker said: "We have moved the start time of the game against Reus forward. The doors will now open at 6pm, with the game due to get under way by 7.30pm. We have done this so as many of our fans as possible can get to see us in what will probably be our last ever Champion's league game. We want the evening to be a memorable one and we are hoping for a complete sellout."

ECRHA Under 13's

Herne Bay United's Under 13's teams, the Vipers and Adders, played at Burwell on Saturday in the Eastern Counties League. The Vipers' first match was against Peterborough and the team made a strong start, Alex Mount scoring twice in the first few minutes and Peterborough adding an own goal. The game settled with no further goals until Lewis Greenwood scored seconds from the end of the half. The Vipers took control of the second half with a hat-trick from Mount, a second for Greenwood and one for Ashley Barton. Peterborough could only find the net once in reply: final score HBU Vipers 9-1 Peterborough.

Their next game was a top of the table clash against Kings Lynn with the outcome of the match being a major decider in the final league standings. Both teams were determined to come out on top and this resulted in an exciting game with end to end play throughout and plenty of chances for both teams to score. Barton scored the only goal of the first half and with Greenwood adding another just after the restart the game seemed to be going the Vipers' way. However, with Kings Lynn scoring after six minutes it set up a tense end to the match as both teams fought for another goal. No more were scored so the match ended HBU Vipers 2-1 Kings Lynn.

The Vipers' next match saw them playing HBU Adders. Both teams seemed evenly matched during the first half and Vipers' goals from Mount and Barton and one for the Adders from Luke Latham set up an interesting second half. Despite a lot of hard work and determination from the Adders which brought them a second goal from Max Osborne, their more experienced club-mates were able to find the net more often. Two goals from Greenwood, a hat-trick for Barton and one for Mount saw the Vipers win 8-2.

With the league title now theirs the final match against Cottenham was a formality but one the Vipers still wanted to win against a rapidly improving side. Barton opened the scoring early in the game. Then an own goal gave Cottenham the equaliser soon after and they scored a second to give them the half time lead. The Vipers fought an exciting second half full of end to end play. Cottenham scored twice early on before conceding an own goal to the Vipers. However, a goal just seconds from full time gave them victory: final score HBU Vipers 2-5 Cottenham.

As well as facing their club-mates HBU Adders also played two other matches. The first was against Kings Lynn with some excellent keeping from Guy Osborne and some good determined defence from the whole team who didn't give up even when Kings Lynn piled on the goals. Unfortunately the Adders didn't get many opportunites to attack the Kings Lynn goal and it wasn't until near the end of the match when Max Osborne slotted home their only goal. Final score Kings Lynn 13-1 HBU Adders.

Their other game was against Peterborough and the team started well with a number of chances although their opponents scored all the first half goals. The second half saw two goals in the first minute, firstly to Peterborough and then to the Adders' Latham. This half saw the Adders play some excellent team hockey resulting in two more goals, one for Connor Botting and a second for Latham. Final score Peterborough 8-3 HBU Adders.

This tournament's results see the Vipers take the league title while the Adders remain in 6th place. The teams' final Eastern Counties tournament takes place on 28 March.

Teams:
Vipers: Ashley Barton, Lewis Greenwood, Katie McVey, Alex Mount, Eddie Mount, Harry Rowbotham, Sam Whiffen

Adders: Charlie Botting, Connor Botting, Luke Latham, Kier Maeers, Guy Osborne, Max Osborne, Alice Osborne-Luck, Joe Upton

Premier League: HBU CSL 10 - 4 Sheffield (Played: Sunday 15 February)

HBU CSL met Sheffield on Sunday 15 February at the Pier. The game started well with a display of well structured team hockey and movement by CSL, the first goal being scored by Charlie Pughe - at full stretch connecting with a pass from Paul McVey, after 4 minutes. It then took another eight minutes, through a period of uncoordinated play, before the second goal was put away by an Arran Bowyer slap shot. The team were unable to regain the initial structure of play despite a discussion held during a ‘time out’ and Sheffield pulled a goal back with six minutes to go. However this spurred CSL into positive action with both Joe King and Paul McVey scoring within the last three minutes of the first half. The half time score HBU CSL 4–1 Sheffield.

The second half saw CSL again, after the half time talk, commence with well structured team play, with a goal by Paul McVey, two from Joe King, making his hat trick, and a second from Charlie Pughe, all being scored within the first ten minutes. Then due to poor defending and a further period of unstructured play, Sheffield replied with three goals within five minutes. The coach then called a ‘time out’ to discuss the playing system. The team re-grouped and responded with two further goals, one from Steve Clarke and another from Charlie Pughe, his hat trick, with two minutes left on the clock. The final score HBU CSL 10–4 Sheffield.

European League: Herne Bay United 0 - 21 Bassano (Played: Saturday 14 February)

For more photos of Herne Bay United in the European League 2008 / 2009 visit our Photo GalleryHerne Bay United played Italian giants Bassano 54 at the Pier in their penultimate game of this year's European League. HBU started well, and managed to limit the Italian side to one goal in the opening eight minutes. However the professional's superior fitness and passing began to show and United could do nothing to stem the tide as Bassano went in at haltime 0-9. The second half began as the first had ended, with Bassano on top, although United were defending manfully; with ten minutes gone in the half the score was still 0-9. Whilst United were managing to keep the Italians out, they were not creating any chances of their own. With ten minutes remaining a time out was called. United player/manager Phil McVey instructed his players to throw caution to the wind and attack Bassano in search of their first European goal at the Pier this season. United then threw everything they had at Bassano and were extremely unlucky not to score; Hudson, Barker, Smith and Hosking all hitting the post or crossbar. McVey and Hudson forced world class saves from the Italian 'keeper. Unfortunately United's attacking approach led to huge gaps being left at the back which Bassano capitalised on, scoring 12 goals in as many minutes. The final score was 0-21.

Following the game HBU Captain Simon Hosking said: "We are gutted not to score. Yet again our fans were amazing, we really wanted to score for them. Conceding 21 goals is a hard one to take, but we knew they were going to go for as many as they could, and we went chasing a goal of our own. Now we can't wait for Reus in a month's time. It will be our last game in the Euro League and we want to score a few for the fans! We know we can do it."

Player manager Phil McVey added: "For the first half of the match we defended ok, but when we had the ball we played with fear, players were panicking in possession. We thought we had a goal in each half but the Spanish refs thought otherwise. After the time out in the second half the lads played like a different team. I know we conceded a few goals in that period but we really went at them and made a game of it. Hopefully we can take that belief forward into our European match against Reus. We want to do our supporters proud, we want to score goals and compete from the first whistle to the last. Hopefully the fans will come out in force for that one. The team have something to prove, and I know they can't wait."

Kent League: Apex 7 - 2 CSL

Apex, HBU's veteran side, took on CSL in an exciting game on Saturday night in the Kent League; having won their first game Apex were very keen to maintain their unbeaten record. Apex started the game stronger and were moving the ball around well. Then with 17 minutes remaining in the half Chris Espejo scored with a flick shot to put Apex 1-0 up. CSL came back immediately and were awarded a penalty 30 seconds later, which captain Joe Fidock fired home to make it 1-1. Three minutes later Apex went in front again, when Paul McVey capitalised on a mix-up in the CSL defence to make it 2-1 to Apex. The game then settled down with both sides playing the ball around well. Apex were the more threatening, and with 10 minutes remaining in the half Chris Espejo came from behind the goal to force the ball home at the near post to make it 3-1 to the veteran side. Although CSL did create some chances they could not break through the solid veteran defence, and at halftime the score was 3-1 to Apex.

The second half continued were the first left off. Apex slowed the game down and kept possession well. Both teams were creating chances but Apex were proving to be more dangerous in attack. Chris Espejo in particular was on fire, and he scored his third of the game with another flick shot into the top corner of the goal to put Apex 4-1 up with 18 minutes left. CSL would not give up as they pressed the tiring Apex players. Their hard work was rewarded with 11 minutes to go when Steve Clarke scored with a first time shot past a helpless Garrett Priestley in the Apex goal (4-2). CSL's hopes of getting back into the match were short lived as immediately from the restart Apex attacked and Paul McVey fired home his second of the game to make the score 5-2. CSL were now pressing even harder in defence; this opened up gaps and Apex capitalised with further goals from Chris Espejo and Nigel Mills to make the final score 7-2 to Apex.

Following the game Apex player Nigel Mills said: "We knew it would be a tough game, CSL are good side, we are thrilled with the win, that's two out of two. We entered the league for fun, but now we're in it, we really want to win it. I just hope our bodies hold together. On a personal note it was great to get on the score sheet tonight, it's been a while, but the feeling you get when to score is the same as I remember, I love it!!"

CSL captain Joe Fidock said: "Fair play to Apex, they played better than us on the night and deserve the victory. We were good in patches, we just need to sustain it from the start of the game to the end. Hopefully we will bounce back in our next match."

Apex captain Phil McVey added: "That's an excellent result for us; we moved the ball around well, and we held on to it for long periods, this meant CSL could not build up momentum. There are areas we need to improve on, but for us we are all just enjoying playing in this team again."

Apex: Garrett Priestley (GK), Phil McVey (c), Jon Barton, Matt Barton, Paul McVey (2), Nigel Mills (1), Chris Espejo (4)

ECRHA Division 1

A somewhat depleted HBU's Junior team travelled to Kings Lynn on Sunday to take part in an Eastern Counties Senior Division One Tournament without two of its main players. The first game was against Cambridge and was a good and moderately paced game, HBU went into half time with the scores level at 0-0. During the second half, HBU's concentration dropped slightly which resulted in Cambridge scoring two quick goals. Despite HBU working very hard they were unable to respond. The final score HBU 0–2 Cambridge.

The second game was against a Bury Guest team, (and this is recorded as 9–0 win to HBU). However HBU's youngsters continued to play good structured team hockey, but went into half time 4-1 down. Disaster struck half way through the second half when Myles Barker was struck in the face by a ball from a slapshot, breaking his nose, (for the second time this season). This resulted in him having to visit the local hospital and of course take no further part in the games. HBU were then down to just five out players, but they continued to fight hard but conceded three more goals in the second half to only one in reply. The final score was Bury 7–2 HBU.

HBU went into the final game of the day against the full squad of the home team, Kings Lynn Seniors, with only five players and felt as though the odds were stacked against them. But all the players found it within themselves to push their game up another gear and even more. They took the game to Kings Lynn with Joe Singleton and Liam Holland scoring in quick succession within the first three minutes of the game. They say that lightening does not strike twice in the same place, but with 12 minutes left in the first half Sam Rowbotham was hit squarely in the face with a ball from a slapshot, breaking his nose; he was unable to play any more of the game. This left HBU with just four outplayers, but they went into half time 2–0 ahead. The second half saw Kings Lynn pushing HBU hard, trying to overwhelm them, but good attacking and defending by HBU denied them for most of the time. Kings Lynn then drew one goal back but this was again countered by further goals from Joe Singleton and Liam Holland. With ten minutes still on the clock and holding the lead, the four remaining out players and the goal keeper worked as hard as they have ever done to keep Kings Lynn out of the net for the remainder of the game, even though one of the HBU players received an accumulated blue card with a two minute suspension. But with two and a half minutes left on the clock the three remaining players continued to defend ferociously. Final score HBU 4–1 Kings Lynn.

The whole of the team, out players and goal keeper alike played exceptionally well during this tournament and with 110% effort being put in by every player during the last game, no-one could have asked for more. All our best wishes go to the Nose Job guys.

Team: Jason Robertson (GK), Liam Holland, Joe Singleton (Cpt), Myles Barker, Sam Rowbotham, Alfie Sheppard, Emily Sheppard.

Senior National Cup Qualifiers: Herne Bay United 11 - 8 Grimsby (Played 31 January 2009)

For more photos of Herne Bay United in the Senior National Cup 2008 / 2009 visit our Photo GalleryHerne Bay United faced Grimsby in the quarter finals of the National Cup at the Pier on Saturday. Having lost to Grimsby in their last Premier League match HBU knew it was going to be a tough game. Determined to get their season back on track it was United who started stronger. Once again the reigning champions were without two of their strongest players, captain Simon Hosking and Karl Smith were both unavailable for selection due to prior commitments. This did not phase United, and they started the game strongly. After some good build play, stand in captain Brendan Barker put United 1-0 after four minutes. The goal gave the reigning champions and cup holders the confidence boost and three minutes later Barker scored again to make it 2-0. The game then settled down, United were dominating the play and creating the better chances. Grimsby were struggling to break down the home side's defence, but were slowly working their way into the game. However after a Grimsby attack broke down, United counter-attacked with a three man move which resulted in Joe Singleton firing home from the edge of the box to make it 3-0 with eight minutes remaining in the half. Grimsby though pulled one back through Marc Waddingham a minute later to make it 3-1. The goal did not phase the champions and with five minutes remaining in the half Barker and player Manager Phil McVey both scored within 30 seconds of each other to make the score 5-1. Grimsby came at United again and with two minutes left they made it 5-2 as their captain Andrew Simms scored with a shot that took a wicked deflection. United were looking threatening in every attack, and with 40 seconds left in the half Neil Austin scored with a well taken slap shot to make it 6-2 at the break.

The second half was a more even affair, United scored first through Barker after eight minutes to make it 7-2. Grimsby to their credit did not give up, and came at United again and again. They were rewarded with two goals in a minute to pull the score back to 7-4. However United showed their experience and with 13 minutes left Dendy Hudson scored once and Barker three times, all within 90 seconds to put United 11-4 ahead; the game was now effectively over. Grimsby did not let their heads drop and as United eased off in the final ten minutes they managed to score four unanswered goals to make the final score 11-8 to the home side.

After the game stand in captain Brendan Barker said: "We are pleased with the win, we lost to them in our last domestic game, and the team was eager to put things right. Hopefully we can now forget about the game we lost and move on. On a personal note I'm thrilled to have scored seven in one game, especially as I was captain. It was an honour to wear the armband for a game, to lead the team to victory is always a good feeling, and to do it in what was an important game for us means a lot. We know we have to work harder in training and listen to the coach if we want to do the double again this year."

Player Manager Phil McVey added: "Make no mistake this was an important game for us. We lost to them last time, and it was important that we put things right tonight. I was very pleased with our performance for two thirds of the game. We passed the ball well in attack, and we defended as a team. A few bad habits have been creeping into our game, and it is something we needed to address. Hopefully the loss to Grimsby in our last match has given the lads the kick up the backside they needed. We dominated the game tonight, I would have liked to have pushed on in the last ten minutes but we let our standards drop. Credit to Grimsby though, they did not give up, and along with Middlesbrough, Manchester and Bury, they are still serious title contenders this year."

SECRHA Under 13's

The second Southern Counties Under 13's tournament took place on Sunday with three matches that were exciting and entertaining to watch. The first clash was between HBU Adders and HBU Cobras and it was the Cobras who took an early lead through David Martindale. The Adders equalised through Luke Latham two minutes later and the teams were evenly matched for the remainder of the half. However, the Adders took control in the second half through a Max Osborne hat-trick and two from Kier Maeers which the Cobras were unable to find a reply to. Final score HBU Adders 6-1 HBU Cobras.

The second match was between HBU Cobras and HBU Pythons. Two own goals from the Cobras gave the Pythons a good start and they added another of their own from Katie McVey before the break. Adam Bowron scored a second half hat-trick to give the Cobras a chance but two goals for Tom Barton and one apiece for Jamie McVey and Connor Botting put the result beyond doubt. Final score HBU Pythons 7-3 HBU Cobras.

The final game was between the Adders and Pythons. Osborne put the Adders ahead only for Barton to equalise 30 seconds later. Osborne added another as did Latham to give the Adders a 3-1 lead at the break. Jamie McVey scored for the Pythons soon after the restart but goals for Joe Upton, Osborne and two for Maeers gave the Adders the game. Final score HBU Adders 7-2 HBU Pythons.

National Cup Qualifiers: Under 17's 2 - 11 Bury and Under 20's 4 -1 Bury

HBU's U17 and U20 teams travelled to Peterborough on Sunday to try to win a place to compete in the National Cup Finals. The U17 team were the first to compete. Their opposition being Bury, it was always going to be an uphill struggle for the young HBU team. However there were moments where some good cohesive hockey was played by HBU, but unfortunately this theme was not maintained for long enough for HBU to make any impact on Bury, who dominated the game and finished with their place in the final secured, the final score Bury 11–2 HBU.

Team: Robbie Lowe, Kelly Fox, Sam Rowbotham, Joe Singleton, Alfie Sheppard, Emily Sheppard, Becca Lawrence, Adam McVey

The U20 team were the last game of a very long day, having had their game delayed by the previous game between Herne Bay and Middlesbrough, who were also competing for a place in the final; this game went to extra time and then penalties, final score Herne Bay 6–4 Middlesbrough. With their local rivals having already secured a place in the final, the pressure was on HBU to win their game against Bury, who with their full squad are very dominant and physical at this level. The HBU team had been prepared for this approach by Bury but the HBU players still started the game nervously and Bury took advantage of a defending error being quick to score after just three minutes into the game. This spurred HBU on to adopt a more positive attitude and take control of the game, and this HBU did with Bury not being able to live with the very high pace of the HBU team. There was some good team hockey played which resulted in two goals from HBU in the last four minutes; one excellent individual effort from Myles Tichband, with him dribbling through the Bury defence and flicking the ball into the back of the net and one from Liam Holland, scoring from one of his trade mark slap shots, giving the keeper no time to react.

HBU went into half time 2–1 ahead, with their spirits lifted high. As discussed at half time and as expected, the second half saw Bury upping the pace and working hard to break through the HBU defence, but without success, with HBU matching them both for pace and skill. Both HBU's defence and our newly returned goal keeper Joel Carnell, keeping them out of effective shooting range and out of the net. HBU now dominated and dictated the flow of the game. All the players melded well and provided an excellent display of structured hockey; Jake Fox with boundless energy and hard tackling, Myles Barker's solid defence and distribution of the ball from defence, Sam Rowbotham's tackling and vision and even the youngest team member Alfie Shepperd holding his own often against Bury's much older and physically bigger captain. As a result of HBU's tactics and performance they drew further ahead with another goal from Liam Holland's slap shot and the final goal scored by Joe Singleton. Final score HBU 4-1 Bury, securing the HBU U20 team a place in the Cup Final.

At the end the Captain, Myles Tichband, said he was very impressed with the players as the whole team played their part in getting the result that they wanted, an excellent performance by all despite the shaky start. It was an entertaining and exciting game of hockey to play in and according to the spectators an excellent game to watch. Now we must all continue to train hard to ensure that we can match and hopefully beat Herne Bay in the Final.

Team: Joel Carnell, Myles Tichband, Myles Barker, Joe Singleton, Jake Fox, Liam Holland, Sam Rowbotham, Alfie Sheppard

National Cup Qualifiers: Under 13's 4 - 0 Peterborough

Saturday saw HBU under 13's travel to Peterborough for the semi-final of the National Cup against Peterborough. The team were at full strength for the first time in several months and hopes were high going into the game. The game started slowly with HBU struggling to find any rhythm to their play and it was taking a while for them to settle down. As the first half went on, HBU gradually started to dominate the game creating numerous chances but were unable to put the ball in the net. Peterborough were restricted to taking long range shots whenever they got the opportunity to shoot, which were comfortably dealt with by Eddie Mount. HBU were eventually able to break Peterborough down when Alex Mount scored with less than two minutes remaining of the first half, followed by a further two quick goals from Ashley Barton and Lewis Greenwood within the space of a minute. The score at half-time was HBU 3 Peterborough 0.

The second half went in the same way as the first with HBU being the stronger team and creating lots of chances but were only able to add one more goal when Ashley Barton scored after three minutes. The final score ended HBU 4 Peterborough 0. HBU will now play Kings Lynn in the final on 11 July 2009

European League: CP Tenerife 19 - 1 Herne Bay United (Played: Saturday 17 January)

Herne Bay United travelled to Tenerife for their third and last away game in this years Champions' League. It was always going to be a difficult fixture, and although four of the players travelled on Thursday, the majority of the team had to travel late Friday night due to work commitments, not arriving at the hotel until 3am on the day of the game.

The English champions actually started the better of the two sides, and although they created the opening few chances of the game, it was the Spanish side who scored first with two goals in quick succession. HBU continued to play good hockey and pulled a goal back through captain Brendan Barker, who scored with a long range effort to make the score 2-1. With ten minutes remaining in the half Tenerife scored three goals in a minute to make it 5-1. Again United did not let their heads drop and were unfortunate not to score again before the interval as they were awarded two penalties; both were saved by the in-form Tenerife 'keeper. A couple more goals for Tenerife just before the break made it 7-1 to the Spanish at halftime.

The second half proved to be much tougher for United as the travelling and superior fitness of their opposition started to show. United lost one of their main players when Dendy Hudson was hit in the face with a stick leaving him requiring stitches and out for the rest of the match. Tenerife were now dominating possession and despite everyone in the United defence giving their all, Tenerife piled on the pressure and as cracks started to appear in United's tiring defence the Spanish giants scored again and again to make the final score 19-1.

Following the game HBU captain Brendan Barker said: "Once again it comes down to us taking our chances. If we had scored our penalties in the first half we would have probably gone in at halftime 4-3 down, the second half would have completely different then as they would have had to sit off us, or risk us scoring again. As it happened they were comfortably in front which meant they could pile on the pressure in the second half, and that's exactly what they did."

HBU Manager Phil McVey added: "The final scoreline was a little disappointing, the game wasn't as one sided as it would appear. I'm pretty pleased with our first half performance; we caused them problems when we attacked, but we didn't take our chances. The second half proved to be much tougher when they upped the pressure, and we found it difficult. We didn't have our strongest side this weekend; we were without our No.1 keeper Dan Barton and captain Simon Hosking, but the players who played could not be faulted. It's a learning experience for everyone. Overall I would say we did okay, but I want us to do better. Our next Champions' League match is at home on February 14 against Italian Bassano. It should be an extremely tough game as Bassano and Reus are tied at the top of the table, having drawn with each other twice, and whoever ends up with the best goal difference will go through to the quarter finals. We still have to play them both at the Pier, so it looks like HBU will have huge say in deciding the group."

Team: David Garlick (GK), David Beeson (GK), Neil Austin, Brendan Barker capt (1), Matt Barton, Chris Espejo, Dendy Hudson, Phil McVey, Joe Singleton, Karl Smith.

National Cup: Bury 4 - 3 HBU CSL

HBU CSL travelled to Soham to meet Bury in the first round of the Senior National Cup Qualifiers. This was always anticipated to be a tough game and with the previous week's Premier League win, CSL were in a positive mood. The game was played at a very high and energetic pace by both teams, with Bury going into the lead after five minutes closely followed by another a few minutes later . This spurred CSL into upping their game even more in an attempt to counter the push from Bury, which succeeded with Paul McVey opening up CSL's scoring with eleven minutes left on the clock, the game became a very passionate affair with some minor incidents occurring. The first half finished Bury 2–1 HBU CSL, but on the half time whistle an incident occurred which saw a Bury attacker and CSL's goal keeper, Dave Beeson both given straight Blue cards each with a five minutes suspension.

The second half saw CSL's rookie goal keeper, Jason Robertson, stepping into the breach to cover, holding Bury out of the goal for the first four minutes. But lack of concentration from the players and keeper alike, saw CSL allowing Bury to score two further goals within a minute. Again CSL rallied and worked hard at keeping Bury out for the rest of the game but with Steve Clarke scoring two further goals for CSL. The final score was Bury 4–3 HBU CSL.

As the Captain Joe Fidock said: "Although it was disappointing to lose the game, the whole team are happy with the much improved way in which they are now playing and all the team have a feeling of growing confidence in their abilities."

Premier League: Herne Bay 1 - 6 HBU CSL (Played: Sunday 4 January)

CSL met Herne Bay at the Pier on Saturday 4 January to play in a Premier League game. CSL entered this game with a positive attitude, having fully discussed the previous evening's Kent League events and now with the intention and determination of getting a much needed win under their belts. The game started with Paul McVey scoring the first goal of the game after six minutes, following this up with a second goal two minutes later. This gave CSL the confidence and drive they needed, and they continued to deny Herne Bay the opportunity to score, the third goal of this half was scored by CSL's Captain, Joe Fidock; CSL going into half time Herne Bay 0–3 CSL.

The second half of the game saw Herne Bay defending very hard and it took another ten minutes before CSL's Steve Clarke added another goal to their tally, but a lapse in concentration by CSL allowed Herne Bay's Luke Moseley to score from a well taken slapshot, giving CSL's goal keeper no chance to react. However CSL continued to dominate the game with Paul McVey and Joe Fidock both scoring further goals to finish the game. Final score Herne Bay 1–6 HBU CSL.

Kent League: Wilbee 1 - 1 Roller Skater and CSL 3 - 5 Macari's

Kent League's third event of the season took place on Saturday 3 January, and was viewed and enjoyed by a good number of local spectators. The opening game was between Wilbee and Roller Skater and both teams had some good chances to open the scoring with them both coming close on several occasions, but both goal keepers keeping their teams in the game. The remainder of the first half was end to end hockey with both teams playing hard but with no goals being scored. Half time saw a draw Wilbee's 0-0 Roller Skater. The second half saw Roller Skater up the pace of their game with Luke Moseley scoring after 10 minutes with a well placed shot giving Wilbee's goal keeper no chance to react. The game continued with some good defensive work by both teams but with Mick Harris saving the blushes of Wilbee's by scoring with one and a half minutes left on the clock. Final Score Wilbee 1–1 Roller Skater.

The second game of the evening saw CSL take on Macari's. This was a high paced affair but neither team were playing good hockey, with CSL did not seeming to be on song. However CSL's Captain Joe Fidock put CSL ahead with seven minutes left on the clock added to four minutes later by Lee Chestnutt, CSL going into half time CSL 2–0 Macari's. The second half saw a rejuvenated Macari's with Mike Back scoring after just two minutes with an excellent shot taken from an unmarked position. CSL's Arran Bowyer then scored the last of CSL's goals for this match, with Macari's Tom White and Danny Butcher putting Macari's ahead with the final score CSL 3–5 Macari's.

CSL's Captain Joe Fidock said he was disappointed to lose but CSL did not deserve to win as Macari's were the more energetic and determined of the two teams. Lets hope that we do better in our Premier League game tomorrow.

Premier League: Grimsby 5 - 4 Herne Bay United

The following day United were up against another up and coming team; Grimsby have been improving steadily for the last few years. United appeared lethargic from the start and conversely, Grimsby were fired up. This cost United as Grimsby scored three unanswered goals in the opening 10 minutes. United finally started to get into the game and captain Hosking pulled one back for the visitors to make it 3-1. Grimsby had the momentum and they went 4-1 up just before the break. The second half saw United dominate possession and they created chance after chance. The Grimsby keeper was having the game of his life, making save after save, then with 15 minutes left Grimsby counterattacked and scored again to make it 5-1. United were now in serious trouble, and redoubled their efforts in attack, With 10 minutes remaining Hosking scored his second of the game to make it 5-2. A few minutes later Barker scored with a close range effort to make it 5-3. Grimsby were now feeling the pressure as United attacked again and again. After wasting numerous opportunities to score United pulled another goal back with three minutes remaining to make it 5-4. Despite overwhelming pressure on them, Grimsby defence, and in particular, their keeper held firm. United could not find the goal they needed and at the final whistle Grimsby had pulled off a shock victory against the reigning champions 5-4.

Following the game HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "We are very disappointed, on paper Middlesbrough were the tougher opponent. We didn't turn up today and we got what we deserved, fair play to Grimsby, they played well and took their chances. The team are all very unhappy, but we are still top of the table and all of our remaining matches bar one are at home, so as long as we win our home games we will retain our title."

Player/manager Phil McVey added: "Against Middlesbrough the lads followed instructions and Brendan was on fire up front; Middlesbrough are a very strong side, and probably still our main rivals for the title. I was very pleased with the professional performance of my team in that game, we recorded our biggest win over them for a good 10 years. Unfortunately we then put in a poor performance against Grimsby, and we got what we deserved. Our finishing was terrible, and their keeper had a blinder. That said, we still created chance after chance which we failed to take. Hopefully this will give us the kick up the backside we need. We don't have a God-given right to the Premier League Title, we have to fight to win it. On the plus side we have only dropped three points this season, so have Middlesbrough. Grimsby and Bury have dropped six. All of these teams have to play each other, and they all have to play us at the pier. If we win our home games we'll be champions."

Team for both games:Dan Barton (GK),Brendan Barker(8),Simon Hosking capt (3), Karl Smith, Dendy Hudson, Matt Barton, Phil McVey, Joe Singleton, Myles Barker.

Premier League: Middlesbrough 3 - 8 Herne Bay United

HBU faced another tough weekend with away matches to Middlesbrough and Grimsby. Both opponents are challenging this season for the title. Middlesbrough started very strongly against the reigning champions, in the opening five minutes the northern side hit the crossbar three times, but could not find the back of the net. United then slowly started to dominate possession. After some good passing Brendan Barker beat the defender and rifled a shot into the top corner to make it 0-1 to the visitors. Three minutes later Barker went on a solo run beating three players and then the keeper to make it 0-2. Middlesbrough were stunned; United capitalised again through Barker who scored again to make it 0-3. Although Middlesbrough were battling hard and were matching United in almost every area, Barker was proving to be the difference, as he scored his fourth of the game to put United 0-4 up. Middlesbrough renewed their attack on the United defence, however they couldn't break through. With five minutes remaining in the half United player/manager Phil McVey found captain Simon Hosking with a rink-long pass. Hosking coolly rounded the defender and finished expertly past a helpless Middlesbrough keeper to make the score 0-5 just before halftime.

The second half saw a shell-shocked Middlesbrough regroup, they came at United with everything they had. Finally ten minutes into the half they pulled one back to make the score 1-5. Buoyed by their success they pressed again and were rewarded two minutes later when they managed to score again to make it 2-5. Any hopes they had of a comeback were short lived as Barker won the ball from the last defender sprinted half the length of the rink and beat the keeper to make it 2-6. Middlesbrough were now becoming increasingly desperate and pushed players forward, Barker made them pay two minutes later when he scored again to make it 2-7. Middlesbrough were now in disarray, and although they managed to pull one goal back (3-7), it was Barker who stepped forward again to score the final goal of the game, (and his seventh) to make the final score 3-8.

Herne Bay United Adders travelled to Burwell on Sunday to play in an Eastern Counties under 13's tournament. The first game was against Bury and Max Osborne opened the scoring for United early on in the game only for Bury to equalise before half time. Bury scored again just seconds after the restart and claimed another soon after. However two goals from Eddie Mount brought the two teams level again. Despite an excellent display of defence from the Adders their opponents were able to get four more goals with the Adders only scoring one more through Connor Botting. Final score HBU Adders 4-7 Bury.

The second game saw the Adders facing Cottenham. Again the Adders were playing well defensively but Cottenham were able to make the most of their chances. Final score HBU Adders 0-13 Cottenham.

Next they faced Kings Lynn. The Adders defence proved strong until halfway through the first half after which Kings Lynn were able to get six goals before the break. Kings Lynn scored another soon after the restart but the Adders picked up their defence again and no futher goals were scored until Osborne got a consolation goal with eight minutes left to play. Kings Lynn were only able to add one further goal to their total. Final score HBU Adders 1-8 Kings Lynn.

The last game was against Peterborough and a combination of the continuing strong defence and two goals from Kier Maeers saw the Adders finish the first half 2-0 up. However, it was Peterborough who took the upper hand in the second half scoring five goals which the Adders could not reply to despite working a number of good chances. Final score HBU Adders 2-5 Peterborough.

ECRHA Under 11's

Herne Bay United's Under 11 team travelled to Kings Lynn to play in the Eastern Counties league on Saturday. Unfortunately the team seemed to be suffering from their lack of recent training and recorded three defeats. The first match against Ely began well with the team showing some good defence and they only conceded one goal in the first half, but determination from the opponents saw United on the wrong side of four second half goals and the team didn't get many chances to score any in reply. Final score Ely 5 - 0 HBU.

The second game was against the strong Cambridge side and the whole game was played in defence, with United only getting a few shots on goal in the second half. The team held Cambridge to an 8-0 scoreline, their opponents' worst result of the day.

In the final game against Kings Lynn A the team were finally beginning to get some passing moves into the game and this resulted in more scoring chances. Charley Bassom put United in front but Kings Lynn A equalised within a minute. Despite a number of chances United failed to find the net again while their opponents got four more. Final score Kings Lynn A 5-1 HBU to end a disappointing day which sees the team slip to 4th place in the league.

European League: Reus Deportiu 17 - 0 Herne Bay United

Herne Bay United travelled to Spain at the weekend to face top Spanish side Reus, in the third match of their Champions league campaign. It was always going to be tough as the Spanish side are one of the best teams in the world. Things were made more difficult as two of United's key players pulled out late on Friday night due to illness. The Spanish giants had all ready stated in the press that they were looking for between 19 and 30 goals, as their rivals Bassano, who they have drawn 2-2 with scored 19 past the English Champions in their last fixture, therefore if they could score more than 19 they would go top of the group. With a virus ripping it's way through the squad, many of the players who did travel were not feeling at their best. However, United were determined to make life as difficult as possible for their foreign counterparts. Reus dominated possession right from the opening whistle, but United held firm for the first five minutes, but Reus went ahead with 19 minutes left in the half. United did not capitulate and actually came back at Reus, creating a few chances of their own. Reus, though soon regained control of the game, and United were pinned down in their own penalty area for over five minutes, they held firm though, and it was ten minutes before Reus added to their score to make it 2-0. United players were beginning to tire, Reus seized the moment and upped the pace, scoring five more in the last five minutes of the half to make it 7-0 at the interval.

The second half saw Reus continue to press United's defence; for long periods United held firm, periodically their concentration would slip and Reus would capitalise scoring ten unanswered goals in the second half to make the final score 17 - 0. Following the game rookie Joe Singleton said: "We are disappointed not to score, but considering we lost two of our main players late on Friday, so we didn't have a full team as it was too late to book anyone else on the flights, we did alright. We knew before the game they were not going to be satisfied with anything under 25 goals, to hold them to 17 is a moral victory. Personally I loved every minute of it, to play against the best players in the world is amazing. It's only my second Champions League game, and I do have to pinch myself sometimes. It's difficult but I'm learning all the time, I want to improve every time I play. Hopefully if I listen to the gaffer and do the right things in training I can establish myself as a main player in the team, and perhaps one day we can beat teams like Reus."

Player Manager Phil Mcvey said: "Overall I was pleased with the team's performance, it was always going to be tough. Reus didn't let up on us for a moment, every one of my players played with the right attitude, no one let their heads drop and we battled from the opening whistle to the final whistle. These games are important for our less experienced players, Dave Beeson in goal, Myles and Joe all performed well. Hopefully they have learned a lot from the game. They now need to carry this experience forward into our own domestic competitions. We have a tough January coming up with away games to title rivals Middlesbrough and Grimsby, followed by an away game in the Champions League against Tenerife."

Kent League: Macaris 6-5 Bayuboys and CSL 7-0 Roll Skater

The Kent League's second event of the season took place on Saturday evening. The opening match saw Macari's playing Bayuboys and a large crowd were entertained by this energetic and exciting performance. Macari's had the better chances in the opening few minutes with Macari's Richard Butcher drawing first blood seven minutes into the game. Bayuboys came close to scoring on several occasions but goal keeper Kristoff White denied Bayuboys, keeping Macari's in the game. The second goal conceded by Bayuboys was during the first half, again scored by Richard Butcher with six minutes left on the clock. The remainder of the first half was end to end hockey with both teams playing hard, but with no further goals being scored. Half time score Macari's 2, Bayuboys 0.

The second half saw Bayuboys up the pace of their game with Tom Hawkins scoring after five minutes with a searing slap shot giving Macari's goalkeeper no chance of reacting. Then within a further 30 seconds Sam Rowbotham placed an excellent drive shot, unsighted by the goalkeeper, into the back of the net. It was now two goals apiece but Macari's did not sit back and it was a full rink push all the way. Danny Butcher then put Macari's back in the lead with a well struck slap shot but Bayuboys were not going to be denied and their efforts were rewarded with Liam Holland placing one of his trade mark slap shots from the left hand side into the back of the net. The battle continued apace with Tom Hawkins again levelling the score with six minutes to go, again replied to by Macari's Danny Butcher scoring his second goal of the game. This was developing into an exciting end to end tit for tat game with Bayuboys again levelling the score with another goal from Liam Holland. The last five minutes of the game continued with total commitment from both teams. The deciding goal of the game being scored with just 43 seconds left on the clock with a clever deflection into the net by Macari's Dave White, from a long pass. Final Score Macari's 6–5 Bayuboys. This was an exciting and enthralling game played until the end at a very high pace.

Both teams' Captains, Myles Tichband (Bayuboys) and Tom White (Macari's), said that they had all really enjoyed the game, and agreed that a draw would have been a fair result, but Macari's were more than happy to take the points.

Macari's: Kristoff White (GK), Tom White (Cpt), Mike Back (1), Danny Butcher (2), Dave White (1), Richard Butcher (2)

Bayuboys: Joel Carnell (GK), Liam Holland (2), Jake Fox, Sam Rowbotham (1), Myles Tichband (Cpt), Becca Lawrence, Tom Hawkins (2), Kelly Fox (GK)

The second match of the evening saw CSL take on Roller Skater. This was not only a high pace game but a well structured display of roller hockey from CSL who very nearly dominated the first half with the Captain, Joe Fidock scoring within the first 70 seconds. However Roller Skater came very close to scoring on several occasions, but CSL's goalkeeper Jason Robertson provided an outstanding performance keeping Roller Skater out of the game. CSL finishing the first half CSL 7 Roller Skater 0.

The second half saw the pace increase with Roller Skater pushing hard in an attempt to reduce the deficit, but CSL were taking advantage of this tactic, hitting Roller Skater on the counter attack. However Paul Dalton, Roller Skater's goal keeper, performed exceptionally well in the second half denying CSL any further goals.

Following the game, Joe Fidock, CSL's Captain, said that they had enjoyed the game immensely, he was very pleased with his players as they certainly played far better and more structured hockey than they have done for a while. It was a little disappointing for CSL not to score in the second half, when they should have dominated the play, but Roller Skater's change in defensive tactics frustrated any further scoring opportunities for CSL. Joe also complimented Lee Chestnut's contribution, having returned after a five year break, which was an added asset to the team as is our goalkeeper Jason who is improving game on game.

Herne Bay United's Under 11 team travelled to Burwell on Saturday to play their second Eastern Counties tournament of the season. Their first game was against kings Lynn A and their opponents took the lead after three minutes. United equalised through David Martindale but fell behind again before halftime. The second half was very even but proved goalless until the final two seconds when Charley Bassom slotted home the equaliser for United, final score 2-2.

The second game was against a strong Cambridge side and the United players struggled to contain their opponents. It was only down to some excellent saves from keeper Jarod Dyball, including a penalty, that kept the score fairly respectable, final result HBU 0-9 Cambridge.

The next opponents were Kings Lynn B, and with the team really starting to work well together it was an exciting game to watch. Goals were disallowed on both sides in the first half and the team were 4-1 down at half time, Charlie Botting scoring United's goal. Premier League: Manchester 1 - 6 Herne Bay United

United again employed the defensive tactics of pressing their opponents, and while this limited Manchester to a few long range efforts, United were not playing well when they were in possession of the ball. The reigning champions squandered numerous chances in the first half before captain Hosking scrambled the ball home from close range to make the score 0-1. United continued to misfire in attack, but their defence remained strong. At half time the score was 0-1.

Manchester buoyed by the close score-line, attacked United with renewed vigour, but could not break through. Matt Barton who came on at half time made all the difference; he was finding space in and around the Manchester penalty area and was laying the ball off excellently to his team-mates. All of a sudden United were now creating chance after chance. Five minutes in Barton found Barker who hit a first time shot into the bottom left corner of the goal to make the score 0-2. The pair teamed up again two minutes later in an identical move to put United three goals up. HBU were now moving through the gears and it was Barton again who crossed the ball this time to Karl Smith to score from close range to put the game beyond reach of the home side (0-4). Manchester continued to battle and as United tired it was up to HBU keeper Dave Garlick to produce a string of fine saves to keep the home side out. Then with six minutes remaining Dendy Hudson finished a well worked move to put United 0-5 up. Not satisfied United attacked again and Barton and Barker again teamed up before Barker made it 0-6 with his third goal of the game. Now the only question was whether keeper Dave Garlick could keep a clean sheet. He couldn't; with three minutes remaining Manchester scored a consolation goal, a slapshot from distance which cannoned in off the post to make the final score Manchester 1-6 HBU.

Following the games HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "We are delighted to take maximum points this weekend. We weren't at our best in either game, but we managed to grind out the results. We defended well and that gives us a solid base to build on".

HBU Player Manager Phil McVey added: "Both opponents this weekend are serious contenders for the title this year, so we knew it was going to be tough. We didn't fire on all cylinders in attack, but our defence was very good, to only concede two goals over the two matches was excellent. Both our keepers played well, but the player who impressed most in the Bury game was our new recruit Joe Singleton, he never stopped skating and he held the ball really well. In the Manchester game the player who contributed most was Matt Barton; he was exceptional, his movement was excellent, and his use of the ball changed the game for us. Overall I am please with the team's performances. We were professional throughout, dominating both games, without setting the world alight. Hopefully we can build on these results, we have now gone top of the league, and we are determined to stay there."

HBU now turn their attention European Champions League, their next match is away to Spanish giants Reus on 13 December.

HBU team for the weekend: Dan Barton (Gk), Karl Smith (1), Neil Austin (1), Dendy Hudson (2), Simon Hosking (1) (c), Brendan Barker (4), Matt Barton, Joe Singleton (1), Dave Garlick (GK), Phil McVey (Player/Manager)

Premier League: Bury 1 - 4 Herne Bay United

Herne Bay United faced a tough weekend away in the Premier League with games against Bury and Manchester who were lying 1st and 2nd in the league at the start of the weekend. HBU have struggled in the past in both these fixtures. United started strongly against their old rivals, pressing Bury all over the rink. The tactic paid off, when after only three minutes Brendan Barker won the ball from a Bury defender, skated round the goal and forced the ball home at the near post to make it 0-1. Bury tried to get their team game going but United's pressure defence kept them well away from the danger area, and the Bury players were limited to long shots which were easily saved by Dan Barton in the United net. As the half wore on United continued to dominate play, and but for some bad luck and some fine saves from the Bury keeper they would have scored a couple of more goals. However at half time the score remained close at 0-1.

The second half saw United continue their tactic of pressing Bury all over the rink. As the Bury players began to tire gaps started appearing; ten minutes into the half Dendy Hudson won the ball, skated half the length of the rink before unleashing an unstoppable flick shot with nestled in the top left hand corner of the Bury net to make the score 0-2. Bury rallied, and finally began creating some chances of their own with Jack Holmes and Darren Willis both forcing excellent saves from Barton. It looked as if Bury were out of the game, but with four minutes remaining Holmes gave Bury hope with a well taken flick shot from a tight angle to pull one back for the home team. HBU stepped up the pace again, determined not to let Bury back into the game, within a minute Neil Austin and Barker broke free, and after a neat interchange Austin rifled the ball home to restore United's two goal lead. Bury were now chasing the game, and were taking risks at the back. The extra space meant United could now hold the ball and run the clock down. As the game entered the last five seconds HBU captain Simon Hosking beat two players and as he wound up for his shot, he was brought down in the penalty area. Seventeen-year-old Joe Singleton stepped up to take the penalty, he held his nerve to score to make the final score Bury 1-4 HBU.

United then travelled on to Manchester for their game the following day, arriving at their hotel at 3am Sunday morning.

SECRHA Under 13's (Played 23 November 2008)

For more photos of Herne Bay United games in the SECRHA Under 13's League 2008 / 2009 visit our Photo GalleryThree teams from Herne Bay United competed in the first Southern Counties Under 13's tournament of the season at the Pier on Sunday. The first game saw Cobras facing the Adders with plenty of chances throughout the game for both sides. Adders took a 2-0 lead into the break through Luke Latham and Kier Maeers, and Maeers stretched the lead further soon after the restart. Cobras fought back through a sustained period of possession with Adam Bowron claiming a hat-trick to level the scores. However, with 30 seconds remaining Maeers also completed his hat-trick to give the Adders a 4-3 win.

The second game saw the Cobras in action again, this time against the Pythons, a team made up entirely of under 11 players. The Pythons started with the greater share of possession and Connor Botting put them into the lead with less than a minute gone. David Martindale then scored for the Cobras before Lewis Greenwood and Charley Bassom pulled two back for the Pythons. Martindale scored again before the break. The second half saw plenty of action as two goals each for Bowron and Martindale stretched the Cobras' lead. With only two in the Pythons' reply from Greenwood Cobras ran out 6-5 winners.

Finally the Adders played the Pythons in the most keenly contested game of the day. There were some excellent passing moves and defence from the young Pythons who succeeded in keeping the Adders at bay for much of the match. Greenwood put the Pythons ahead before Max Osborne and Latham scored to give the Adders the half time lead. Pythons equalised early after the break through Jamie McVey before Maeers and Osborne gave the Adders a two goal lead. An energetic end of the game saw two goals scored in the last 20 seconds of the match by the Pythons' McVey and Adders' Latham. Final score Adders 5-3 Pythons.

European League: Bassano 19 - 0 Herne Bay United

Herne Bay United travelled to Italy at the weekend to take on top Italian side Bassano in their second Champions league match. Bassano are currently third in the Italian league and needed to score as many goals as they could as they drew their first match with tournament favourites Reus. In front of close to 2,000 fans Bassano piled on the pressure right from the opening whistle; United's defence held firm for the first 10 minutes. However it was only a matter of time before the Italians broke the deadlock. With 12 minutes remaining in the half they scored their first goal of the game. United though continued to battle and there were no more goals until the last five minutes of the half. United players were beginning to tire and Bassano capitalised scoring six more before the break to make the score 7-0 at half time.

The second half saw Bassano continue to dominate possession, and United battling manfully in defence. United again managed to keep the Italians out for the first ten minutes of the half, but it was inevitable that the Italians would break through, with 15 minutes left the home scored their eighth goal, followed a minute later by their nineth. United were now struggling with the pace of the game; things were made worse when in a two minute period United lost three of their players through injury. Captain Simon Hosking received a blow to the hand, Matt Barton was pushed head first into the goal post, knocking him out, and Dendy Hudson was hit in the face by a stick. With only one sub on the bench the United players could not come off for a rest. The 3.30am start that morning began to take it toll, and in the last five minutes of the half, with the United players out on their feet the Italians added ten goals to make the final score 19-0. Remakably top player Mariotti failed to convert four penalties for which the crowd gave him some stick!

After the game HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "We are disappointed with the scoreline, the game was much closer than 19-0. The problem is we all work, so we have to travel on the day of the game, which meant a 3:30 start this morning. It's frustrating as out of their 19 goals they scored 16 of them in the last fiveminutes of each half. Their superior fitness is the main difference, but they are professionals and we are amateurs, so it's always going to be a major factor. I think we are stronger physically and mentally than we were last year, so we just need to keep on working."

HBU Manager Phil McVey added: "We knew it was going to be tough because they had to go for goals tonight. Overall I'm very pleased with the performance, we had two players making their Champions' League debut, (Joe Singleton and Myles Barker), and they both did very well, although it was a bit of a baptism of fire for them. The scoreline is tough to take; for 90% of the game we kept them to 3-0, unfortunately as amateurs we are going to struggle in the last 5 minutes of each half. The players are working on their fitness, as the season progresses the lads will become fitter and stronger, so hopefully it will become less of a factor. On the plus side, we showed albeit for 90% of the match, that we deserve to be on the rink with these top teams. We look stronger than last season, Joe and Myles both played well, in what was always going to be a difficult game for them, and our appetite to improve and succeed at the highest level is stronger now than ever."

HBU's attention turns back to the Premier League as they have potentially their toughest weekend of the season when they travel to old rivals Bury and high flying Manchester in a fortnight's time. Then it's over to Spain to face Reus and their star man Pedro Gil on 13 December.

Kent League: Wilbee 1 - 6 Apex and Roll Skater 5 - 2 Bayuboys (Played 8 November 2008)

For more photos of Herne Bay United Apex in the Kent League 2008 / 2009 visit our Photo GalleryThe Kent League started in earnest this weekend. For the purpose of the competition, six teams have been formed from the town's two clubs. The opening match saw Wilbee's take on Apex. A crowd of around 200 watched this tense affair. Wilbee's had the better chances in the opening few minutes, with Mick Harris, (the original fox in the box) coming close a couple of times. It was Apex's Phil McVey who opened the scoring with a well taken flick which flew past an un-sighted Christophe White in the Wilbee's goal. Apex were now warming to the task and five minutes later Nick Barton put them 2-0 ahead. With eight minutes to go in the half Matt Barton ghosted in at the far post to finish well, making it 3-0 to Apex. Both defences were on top for the remainder of the half, and at halftime the score was 3-0 to Apex.

The second half saw Wilbee's up the pace of their game; John Chalk, Robin Cathcart and Mick Harris all had chances but Apex's keeper Garrett Priestley kept them all out. Then with 10 minutes gone Jon Barton scored from close range after a goal mouth scramble to put Apex 4-0 up. Wilbee's did not give in, and with seven minutes remaining they won a penalty, which Mick Harris expertly put away in the top left hand corner to make the score 4-1. A minute later John Chalk burst through Apex's defence only to see his slap shot hit the crossbar. Wilbee's continued to commit players forward in an effort to get themselves back in the game; this left them short at the back. Apex capitalised on this as Paul McVey exploited the gaps in their defence to score two goals in quick succession to make the final score 6-1 to Apex.

Following the game Wilbee's captain John Chalk said: "We are gutted. It was a close game and we really wanted to get our campaign under way with a win. We knew we were taking a chance towards the end but we needed to push players forward if we were going to get anything from the game. Apex caught us on the break and it cost us. On another day it might have gone our way, but that's roller hockey."

Apex captain Phil McVey said: "The team are pleased with the win; once we went a few goals up we knew it was going to be difficult for them to come back. Both teams played some excellent hockey, and it was a great advert for the game. If all the matches are this close it is going to make for an entertaining competition. This side is made up from players who all played in HBU's first Premier League title way back in the early 90's. Although we may have slowed down as we have all got older, we haven't lost our competitive nature. The hunger to win every competition we enter is still there, and this competition is no different."

Apex: Garret Priestley (GK), Jon Barton (1), Nick Barton (1), Matt Barton (1), Nigel Mills, Phil McVey (c) (1), Paul McVey (2)

Wilbee's: Kris White (GK), Robin Cathcart, Ian Bates, Richard Adams, John Chalk, Geoff Staggs, Mick Harris (1), Dave Walters

The second match of the evening saw Rollskater take on BayUboys. This match was even closer than the first. It was Rollskater, (fielding a bare team) who drew first blood after only a minute; John Dalton, playing for the first time in six years, coolly slotted home from a tight angle to make it 1-0. The game then settled down with both teams creating chances, it was the BayUboys keeper who the busiest of the two as Rollskater slowly applied more and more pressure on their opponents. Then with only 46 seconds remaining in the half Dalton found some space in front of goal and another fine finish made it 2-0 at the break.

Rollskater started the second half as they started the first; David Todd scored two goals in the first minute to make it 4-0. BayUboys had to step their game up, and despite goals from Sam Rowbottom and Myles Barker to keep BayUboys in touch, they couldn't break down the box defence employed by Rollskater, and Rollskater ran out comfortable 5-2 winners with their last being scored by Luke Mosely.

Following the game Rollskater's David Todd said: "We really enjoyed it, and we're pleased for John, two goals on his comeback after six years, he hasn't lost it".

Bayuboys: Joel Carnell (GK), Liam Holland, Emily Sheppard, Myles Barker(1), Sam Rowbottom (1), Myles Tichband, Joe Singleton, Tom Hawkins.

Premier League: Herne Bay 2 - 25 Herne Bay United

For more photos of Herne Bay United in the Premier league 2008 / 2009 visit our Photo Gallery

Herne Bay played host to local rivals HBU on Saturday night. It was always going to be a tough game for the Bay, and as the score line shows HBU dominated the game. Herne Bay actually had the better chances in the opening few minutes of the game, but they failed to take them and United made them pay scoring 3 goals in a minute. This set the tone for the rest of the game as United's superior team game started to show. The Bay had no answer, as United attacked them again and again. At halftime the score was 11 - 0 to the reigning champions.

The second half saw United pick up from where they left off, applying pressure to Herne Bay players all over the rink. The Bay players struggled to cope and began to tire. United's manager Phil McVey rotated his players continually enabling them to keep the pressure on. This tactic worked, and despite a couple of late consolation goals for the Bay, the final score of Herne Bay 2-25 HBU was a fair reflection on the game.

After the game Herne Bay player Peter Taylor said: "We were well and truly beaten tonight. HBU gave us a lesson in how to play the game. If we learn from this I'm sure we can finish in the top half of the table, they showed why they are champions."

HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "We needed goals tonight, Manchester have been scoring loads of goals, and we have to keep level with them. The first half was more even than the scoreline suggests, they had a few chances, and they fought hard. The second half was easier for us as they tired. Overall we are pleased with the result."

HBU Manager Phil McVey added: "I'm very pleased with the win, and the manner in which we played. It was always going to be tough for the Bay, we are coming off the back of our first European match where the game is played at a higher intensity. We carried that intensity into this game, and although they held firm for the first 10 minutes, we scored at the right times, and they stopped playing as a team which made it easier for us. The other major factor was our squad; every player knew exactly what I wanted from them, and it enabled me to keep rotating them so we could maintain the pressure on them. I'm very pleased with the win as Herne Bay will cause a lot of teams problems this season."

HBU: Dave Garlick (GK), Joe Singleton, Karl Smith (1), Myles Barker (1), Matt Barton (2), Neil Austin (2), Simon Hosking (C) (5), Dendy Hudson (6), Brendan Barker (8). Manager: Phil McVey

This Saturday 8 November sees the start of the Kent League with two games at the Pier Paviliom. At 7.30pm Wilbee's take on Apex, followed immediately by Rollskater v Bayuboys.

Premier League: Manchester 30 - 4 HBU CSL

A mini Adventure. The omens were never good. We were having to travel with a bare squad of six out players, one being a first year Schoolboy and one other just returning to hockey, after having been absent last season with a broken ankle and not back to full fitness; most other CSL players being unavailable due to work commitments, illness, holidays, and a myriad of other reasons. The adventure commenced at 2pm on Saturday afternoon setting off in the mini bus to Manchester in awful weather conditions. After an uneventful, although very slow journey, we arrived at the Arcadia, Manchester at 7.30pm just in time for the players to prepare for the game.

It had always been anticipated that this would be a hard game with so few resources at our disposal, but the game commenced well, Manchester drawing first blood after seven minutes, CSL's Joe King responded a few minutes later with a well struck penalty. Manchester responded two minutes later but again CSL responded with a quick reply from Joe King. The score at 2-2 the game progressed at an excellent pace with Manchester drawing ahead by another goal with 16 minutes left on the clock. Then the fun and games began. The referees from this point onward began to use cards for the most inexplicable of reasons. The players were becoming increasingly frustrated by the referees' actions, but not the opposition players who played well. The team quickly collected six yellows, three blues and a red. By the end of the first half, we were unable to play three main players for fear of being severely depleted for our next Premier League game. The Captain Joe Fidock was on a Blue as was Charlie Pughe and Myles Tichband had been issued an accumulative Red. The decision was then taken that we could not play the Blue carded players, nor play Myles Tichband and with only three out players remaining, continued the game in an attempt to fulfil our obligations. However we did take advice on whether we could abandon the game, but were advised not to, so we continued. Our goalkeeper Dave Beeson received a yellow, for purely shouting at his own player, and then being told by the referee, who is of foreign extract, that he was using bad language. No-one other than the referee heard Dave's bad language and this is most unusual, as Dave's voice is not quiet!!

The second half proceeded with only three out players, Sam Rowbotham (Schoolboy), Tom Hawkins (newly returned from injury) and Joe King who had managed throughout the game not to collect a card, and our apprentice goalkeeper Jason Robertson. They put in a very spirited performance, with both Sam Rowbotham and Joe King scoring two more goals. However they were completely overwhelmed by Manchester, who rotated players continuously, not allowing our players any time to rest. Jason put in a tremendous performance saving a penalty and many other shots on goal. It was a good experience for the newcomers to the team. The match concluded Manchester 30-4 HBU CSL.

The content and references in this report are not because CSL lost a game, we are able to take a loss, and in truth were not expecting to win with the team that were available on the day, but is a complaint as to the negative effect referees can have on a game.

However the mini Adventure did not stop there; once the players were showered and ready all players seemed in good humour. After chatting and joking with the Manchester players and management, we left the Arcadia at 10.45pm and started the drive home, again still in the pouring rain. Having stopped at one of the M6 services for something to eat we then continued on our way, until Junction 18 of the M1, when at 1.10am on Sunday morning, the mini bus ‘died’. We then had to wait for the recovery vehicles to arrive and after approx an hour and a half wait, were transported with the minibus to the Watford Gap Services to wait for a replacement mini bus. This arrived at 5.00am with the sun rising and all the players asleep we continued on home, arriving back in Herne Bay at 7.30am much to everyone's relief. All the team, when they were awake, remained in good humour throughout the journey.

End of a mini Adventure, hopefully one never to be repeated.

European League: Herne Bay United 0 - 10 CP Tenerife

For more photos of Herne Bay United in the European league 2008 / 2009 visit our Photo GalleryHerne Bay United started their European Champions League campaign with a creditable 10-0 defeat to Spanish side CP Tenerife at the pier on Saturday night before a crowd of just under 400. United were always going to be up against it as Tenerife are the reigning European CERS cup winners (roller hockey's equivalent to the UEFA Cup in football). Tenerife started the game strongly and they were 1-0 up after only two minutes. United did not let their heads drop and after some excellent counter attacking hockey Brendan Barker hit a fierce slap shot which cannoned off the cross bar. Tenerife knew they were in for a tough night, United's defence was solid, and the Spanish giants were frustrated time and time again. However, with 16 minutes left in the half they made it 2-0 with another long range effort that flew past an unsighted Dan Barton in the United's goal. HBU rallied again as captain Simon Hosking hit a post, and Barker struck the crossbar for a second time. Tenerife continued to dominate possession although United were beginning to string a few passes together themselves. Growing in confidence United renewed their attack on the Tenerife goal; this cost them as Tenerife counter attacked, scoring twice more before the break to make it 4-0 at halftime.

The start of the second half saw Tenerife immediately on the attack. United, not yet up to speed were punished by two goals in the opening two minutes to put them 6-0 down. Tenerife were now applying more and more pressure on United's defence, and in the next eight minutes scored four more to make it 10-0 with 15 minutes still to play. The English champions were determined to keep the score to 10, and refocused their minds on defence. Tenerife continued to dominate play, but slowly United were beginning to put their opponents under pressure, with Phil McVey, Neil Austin and Karl Smith all forcing good saves from the Spanish keeper. Then with seven minutes to go Barker beat two players before squaring the ball to teammate Hosking, whose first time shot flew past the helpless keeper only to rebound off the underside of the bar. It was now the home team who looked more like scoring, Smith broke through twice only to see his shots saved by the keeper. Dendy Hudson also came close with individual effort which shaved the post. The Spanish keeper was living a charmed life as United continued to create chances. Meanwhile United's keeper Barton was also pulling off some fine saves of his own. Barker managed to hit the crossbar twice more before the final whistle. United's quest for a goal was not to be, and the game ended 10-0 to the visitors.

After the match HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "We are disappointed with the result, we really wanted to score, and felt we could have pushed them closer. Having said that we are pleased with our overall performance, but for the width of the crossbar we could have had 4 or 5 goals which would have put a lot more pressure on Tenerife. Historically the top spanish professional sides have beaten us by over 20 goals, so we have improved massively in the past 12 months. Make no mistake they are one of the best sides in Europe, but we are catching up, and catching up fast."

HBU's player Manager Phil McVey added: "I've mixed emotions. I am pleased with the way we played, we competed throughout, and we created more chances than we have ever done before. Having said that I'm a little disappointed for the players and the fans that we didn't score. We made a few mistakes in defence which cost us, but overall I have to say it was probably one of our strongest performances in this competition. It proves we are narrowing gap. I'm extremely pleased with the attitude of my players, they proved to themselves they can compete at the top level. We need to build on this performance, we have another couple of tough premier league matches before we travel to Spain to play another top Spanish side Reus. On behalf of the team I would like to express our thanks to both the fans and our sponsors, without their support our quest to put the town of Herne Bay on the International sporting map, would never have got off the ground."

European League Pre-match

Before the European League match spectators were entertained by a game between two teams of HBU Under 11 players. The Blue team took an early lead through Max Osborne which was stretched further by a goal from Jamie McVey and a second from Osborne. The White team rallied and pulled two back, first through Charley Bassom and then by a Tom Barton goal in the last 30 seconds of the half. The second half began with another quick goal for the Blues as Osborne claimed his hat-trick before Barton and Bassom each scored again to level the match. The two teams fought to score a winner with the Blue team succeeding through Osborne. This entertaining match finished Blue 5 - 4 White.

Premier League: Sheffield 7 - 10 HBU CSL

HBU CSL travelled to the Metrodome, Barnsley (Sheffield) on Saturday to take part in their first Premier League game of the season against Sheffield. Despite the 250 mile and 4.5 hour journey the players were all looking forward to playing in their first match of the new season and hoped to come away with a win under their belts. The Metrodome is no comparison to the Pier, and we knew that we would need to change our game plan to accommodate a much smaller and poorly illuminated rink.

HBU CSL started shakily with the first goal conceded by CSL after only 20 seconds on the clock, by what can only be described as poor defence and a slight goal keeper error!! The players then steadied themselves and despite very energetic and physical play from both teams, Joe Fidock equalled the score three minutes later, with Charlie Pughe taking CSL into the lead after another eight minutes. The team then settled down, and when Joe Fidock scored his second goal after another five minutes, CSL were never behind again during the game. The game was then played end to end, Sheffield scoring two more goals but with the final goal of the half scored by Steve Clarke taking CSL into half time Sheffield 3–4 HBU CSL.

The second half saw CSL begin to establish stricter discipline in their play with some excellent displays of hockey resulting in goals from Joe King, Joe Fidock, Steve Clarke and Myles Tichband. However CSL lost concentration for a short period of time and allowed Sheffield back into the game, responding with four goals of their own, but the final goal of the match was scored for CSL by Jake Fox giving a final score of Sheffield 7–10 HBU CSL.

CSL may not have played a continuously good game, but all the team are now aware of what they have to improve upon if they are going to move up the League this season. The Captain, Joe Fidock, said he was very pleased with the win and the commitment of all the players, but that we all have room for improvement. He was pleased with the performance of all the players and especially pleased with Sam Rowbotham who played in his first Premier League game and gave an excellent account of himself, although, as Sam was continually reminded of by all his team mates on the journey home, he was the only player not to have scored.

Premier League: Herne Bay United 15 - 6 HBU CSL

The two Herne Bay United Club sides faced each other in the National Premier League on Sunday. It turned out to be a high scoring game with HBU's first team running out comfortable winners.

CSL took a surprise lead through Arran Bowyer after just two minutes, a well taken slapshot flew past an unsighted Barton in the HBU goal. The goal only served to kick start United's team game; four minutes later Neil Austin levelled the score at 1-1. In the remainder of the half United showed why they are the current reigning champions of England as they dominated the game scoring eight more unanswered goals before halftime, to make the score 9-1 at the break.

After the break United eased off and despite Simon Hosking scoring two minutes into the half to make the score 10-1, it was CSL who began to create all the chances scoring four goals in a ten minute spell to bring the score back to 10-5. Another couple of goals and CSL might have been able to assert enough pressure to be able to get back into the game; however United showed their experience by re-establishing the deficit scoring five more with CSL responding with one to make the final score 15-6.

After the game HBU captain Simon Hosking said: "The lads are pleased to get the first league game out of the way. We played really well in the first half, we are a little disappointed with our second half performance, we should have upped our game again, but we eased off and CSL came back at us."

HBU Manager Phil McVey added: "I'm very pleased with our first half performance, we moved the ball well and I felt we dominated the game. At half time I told the players to step it up and warned them of being complacent. Unfortunately our level of play did drop, and it's something we need to address. Having said that, I was impressed with the way CSL stuck at it, and they did very well to come back like they did. They too scored some excellent goals, and if they carry on performing like that they could well end up in the top 3 this season. Overall I'm relatively pleased with my side's performance, I'd give them 7/10.

"On a separate note I feel I should mention two players debuting for the 1st team, Joe Singleton and Myles Barker both acquitted themselves very well throughout, if they continue to work hard in training they will both have a very bright future."

Teams: HBU: Dan Barton (GK), Joe Singleton, Karl Smith (3), Myles Barker, Chris Espejo, Simon Hosking (c) (4), Neil Austin (3), Dendy Hudson (2), Brendan Barker (3), Dave Garlick (GK). Manager Phil McVey

Our first team travelled to St Omer this weekend for three games in a day; the team were using the games as a training exercise in preparation for the coming season which kicks off in earnest this Sunday with their first Premier League match against the club's second team (HBU CSL), followed by their first match of the Champions League, at home to Tenerife on 18 October.

The three games were against the Dutch National Side, Dusseldorf and St Omer. United lost all three games, first game against the Dutch 5-4, second game against Dusseldorf 8-4, and the third to St Omer 9-2.

Following the games HBU player coach Phil McVey said: "Our defending in all three games left a lot to be desired. Against the Dutch National side, it was probably the worst defensive display I have seen by the team for a long time; we did improve against Dusseldorf but we were still making basic errors. Against St Omer our defence improved again and the score line does not reflect the game as they were awarded three dubious penalties and a goal that clearly never should have been given as the ball had not crossed the line. With that said I am extremely disappointed, as are the players, with our performance. Hopefully we have enough time before the Tenerife game to put things right. I will be looking for a huge improvement at training on Wednesday and in our Premier league match against CSL on Sunday. As a team we know what we need to do, I am determined to put things right, and put things right quickly."

Team: Dave Garlic (GK), Paul Nelson (GK), Phil McVey, Matt Barton, Karl Smith, Neil Austin, Nick Barton (1), Dendy Hudson (1), Simon Hosking (4), Brendan Barker (4)

ECRHA Under 13's

Both of Herne Bay United's Under 13's teams competed in an Eastern Counties tournament on Saturday.

Vipers played Bury in the first match with both teams having equal possession and chances. Eddie Mount saved a penalty helping Vipers to a 2-0 lead at half time. Both teams each scored two goals in a busy first five minutes of the second half after which the game settled to mirror the first half although Vipers scored another two goals during the game. Final score Bury 2-6 HBU Vipers (Ashley Barton 2, Lewis Greenwood 1, Sam Whiffen 2, Michael Gregory 1).

Next they faced a strong Kings Lynn team and had to work hard in defence for the whole game. Both teams had chances but Kings Lynn were able to make more of theirs, and also scored from the penalty spot. Final score Kings Lynn 6-2 HBU Vipers (Lewis Greenwood 2).

The Vipers' final game was against Peterborough and although they had plenty of scoring chances their poor finishing meant the half time score did not reflect the amount of possession the team had. However, the second half saw the team pulling together and they finished by winning 1-7 (Harry Rowbotham 2, Michael Gregory 1, Ashley Barton 3, Lewis Greenwood 1).

The Adders began the tournament facing Kings Lynn and this less experienced side struggled to contain the power of their opposition and found themselves 8-0 down at half time. Although they managed a five minute period at the beginning of the second half where their defence proved equal to the Kings Lynn attack they ended the game losing 0-16.

Their next game was against Bury, again a much more experienced team than the Adders. Again the team found it hard to restrict their opposition's scoring opportunities although they were more successful than in their first game. A goal from Max Osborne in the second half was all the team had to cheer about as they lost 1-12.

Finally the Adders played Peterborough and they began to settle more into their game. Although they were unable to score any goals of their own, Peterborough could only score six, making it their best result of the day. Final score Peterborough 6-0 HBU Adders.

The results of the second tournament see HBU Vipers still at the top of the league while HBU Adders are up to 6th.

Teams: HBU Vipers - Ashley Barton, Lewis Greenwood, Michael Gregory, Katie McVey, Eddie Mount, Harry Rowbotham, Sam Whiffen

HBU Adders - Charlie Botting, Connor Botting, Jocie Greenwood, Luke Latham, Guy Osborne, Max Osborne, Alice Osborne-Luck, Joe Upton

ECRHA Under 11's

Herne Bay United Under 11's team played their first Eastern Counties tournament of the season at Cambridge on Saturday. Their first match was against Norwich. The team were playing together for the first time and took a while to settle but had kept the score to 0-0 at half time through some good defensive work. There were more scoring opportunities in the second half but Norwich were first to get on the scoreboard. Charlie Botting equalised before Norwich scored two more. Botting scored her second to keep United in the game but despite a number of shots from all of the team the game ended Herne Bay United 2-3 Norwich.

Next the team faced a strong Cottenham team in a game which saw early opportunities for both teams, Cottenham proving better at finishing. They scored three in the first half, including one from a penalty that was initially saved by Jarod Dyball but netted from the rebound. The second half saw Cottenham in control and scoring two more goals. David Martindale pulled one back for United at the end but it finished Cottenham 5-1 Herne Bay United.

The third game saw the team up against an Ely side comprising four over-age players. With each game United's confidence was increasing and Martindale opened the scoring early in the game. The score remained the same for the whole match and with both teams equally matched there was plenty of end-to-end action. Connor Botting scored in the final seconds of the game to give the team their first win: Herne Bay United 2-0 Ely.

The final game of the day was against Kings Lynn B and United were rocked by a Kings Lynn goal in the first few seconds. However, they didn't let it affect their game and although Kings Lynn scored a second before half time United got three through a Luca Commentucci double and Martindale to give them the lead at the break. The second half saw United totally dominating the game and goals from Martindale and Connor Botting put the game beyond doubt with the final score Kings Lynn B 2-5 Herne Bay United.

It was a very promising start for the under 11's team who stand at 4th in the table. Their next tournament is at Burwell in December.

Team: Charlie Botting, Connor Botting, Luca Commentucci, Britany Dyball, Jarod Dyball, Jocie Greenwood, David Martindale

ECRHA Under 13's

Saturday saw the start of the Eastern Counties Leagues for the U13's in Division 1. We have two teams competing this year which is very good news for the future of the club. HBU Vipers is the same team who finished runners up last year in this league and also runners up in the National Cup final with the addition of Katie McVey. HBU Adders is a new team most of whom are experiencing their first competitive league.

The very long day saw HBU vipers win all their four matches although the matches with Bury and Cottenham remained fairly close until the latter stages when several goals in quick succession saw HBU Vipers pull away. Whilst the scoreline against Peterborough was the closest the eventual win was never in doubt unlike in the previous two games.

HBU Adders' first game in this league saw them struggle against a strong HBU Vipers, in a game in which they were never able to settle down and their inexperience at this level showed and HBU Vipers ran out comfortable winners. After the first game there were games against Peterborough, Cottenham and Bury to follow. Following the first game the team's tactics were changed to make them stronger in defence and to make it difficult for other teams to play through them as HBU Vipers were able to do in the first game. The team responded well with every team member working hard in defence which made all the subsequent games more difficult for the opposition.

I am very pleased with how all the players from both teams played and I am sure that they will all improve and learn as the season goes on.

HBU Vipers - Eddie Mount (GK), Ashley Barton, Alex Mount, Lewis Greenwood, Harry Rowbotham, Michael Gregory, Sam Whiffen, Katie McVey

HBU Adders - Guy Osborne (GK), Max Osborne, Kier Maeers, David Martindale, Alice Osborne-Luck, Luke Latham, Jocie Greenwood

Results: HBU Adders 0 - 14 HBU Vipers; HBU Vipers 8 - 1 Bury; HBU Adders 1 - 9 Peterborough; HBU Vipers 12 - 1 Cottenham; HBU Adders 0 - 7 Cottenham; HBU vipers 5 - 1 Peterborough; HBU Adders 2 - 8 Bury (Goal scorers: Ashley 14, Lewis 11, Alex 9, Michael 2, Luke 2, Harry 2, Katie 1, Max 1)

Allen Mezzanine's League Cup

Herne Bay United kicked off the 2008/2009 season to a promising start. United took part in the National League Cup, which this season was in the format of a mini league of 5 games, two of which were against their closest rivals Bury and Middlesbrough.

United were in flying form on the Saturday scoring a total of 60 goals and only conceding 3, which set them up with a very comfortable goal difference. On Sunday, United would play both their closest rivals of the previous season and would also play them back to back. United looked strong and with both keepers playing extremely well United were victorious over Bury 1-0.

The last game of the day would decide the winner of the competition as both teams were undefeated with United only needing to draw due to the goal difference. Middlesbrough were dominant throughout the first half and went into the half time break 2-0 in front. Midway through the second half Nick Barton scored United's first to bring United within touch of snatching the cup. With a fortunate turn of the dice and some bad luck for Michael Albeson of Middlesbrough scoring an own goal United were level. United could feel their luck changing and with 1 minute left on the clock Brendan Barker scored United's winning goal and secured United their first silverware of the season.

United's goal keeper David Garlick commented after the game, "We have won an important victory today because again as in the National Cup Final last season we have snatched victory away from Middlesbrough and have a psychological advantage over them for the coming season."

The weekend saw the debuts of two bright young players; Joe Singleton who has joined United from town rivals Herne Bay and Myles Barker who has moved up from Herne Bay United's CSL. United's player of the weekend was Dendy Hudson whose finishing was clinical and tallied him with 20 goals.

Also playing in the competition were the England ladies team with Herne Bay United's Becca Lawrence and Emily Sheppard, who will be traveling to Japan with the England.

Herne Bay United's Club Coach Phil McVey said, "It is good United have representation in the England ladies and we wish them the best of luck in the coming tournament, the whole club will be behind them! In respect of this weekend, I am extremely pleased to have won the competition, we used it as a pre-season training for the squad, we never put out our strongest side, and we still came away with the trophy. Winning is a habit, and it's a good habit to have. It's our first silverware of the season, I was very pleased with the way we played, our team game was much improved from last season, and it gives us something to build on as we prepare for our European Champions league game, at home to Tenerife."

The 2008/2009 season has begun with Herne Bay United's two Under 13's teams the Vipers and the Adders starting their campaign on the 13th September and the Under 11's on the 27th September. HBU CSL will be away at a pre-season tournament in Tourcoing France next week with their first game of the Premier League on the 11th October away against Sheffield, and Herne Bay United's 1st team will be travelling to St Omer for a pre-season Tournament on the 4th October with their first Premier League game being on the 12th October at the Pier against their sister team HBU CSL at the Pier at 11:15am. United's first European League game is on the 18th October at the Pier against Spanish side CP Tenerife who were last seasons CERS Champions, doors open at 7:30pm, regularly updated information on the club website: www.hernebayunited.com.

Herne Bay United's players over the weekend:

David Garlick, Phil McVey (5), Myles Barker, Nick Barton (1), Simon Hosking (Capt)(12), Neil Austin (10), Dendy Hudson (20), Brendan Barker (15), Matt Barton and Joe Singleton.
