Heading?

The Herne Bay Grand Pier Pavilion Rink was much in use during the weekend. The first match was on Friday night, when Herne Bay Herons entertained and drew with Montreux. Then on Saturday there were three games. In the afternoon Herne Bay United lost to Montreux by four goals to two, and in the evening they gained a win over Faversham Reserves in the semi-final of the Herne Bay Junior Cup Competition. The final match was between Herne Bay Victoria and Montreux, and the Victorias won by three goals to one.

Before this match, the president of the Herne Bay Rink Hockey Club (Mr G. Cursons M.B.E. J.P.), handed a pair of skis and two pairs of snow shoes to Mr. Mayer for the Montreux Rink Hockey Club, on behalf of Mr. G Walters. He also presented on behalf of the Herne Bay Rink Hockey Club, each member of the team with a souvenir, which was in the form of a silver badge, engraved with a heron.

Friendly: Herne Bay United 2 v 4 Montreux (Played: Saturday 15 November 1924)

The match between Herne Bay United and Montreux attracted a large number of spectators on Saturday afternoon. A fast pace was maintained from beginning to end. At the end of five minutes play Kung registered the first goal for Montreux. Then the United came into the picture, and for some time Mayer was kept busy dealing with shots from Norris, Hudson and Hursell. This state of affairs continued for some time, and upon receiving a pass from Hudson, Hursell scored the equalising goal. Before the interval Hudson enticed Mayer from his fort and then shot into the net.

The second half was contested at a very fast pace, and both goalkeepers showed remarkable skill in saving some difficult shots. Although the United tried hard to add to the lead they found Mayer in brilliant form. Gentry saved a penalty; but failed to stop attempts from Zeltner, Steffen and Kung, who notched three goals.

The teams were:
Herne Bay United – Gentry (GK); Griggs; Norris; Hudson 1 and Hursell 1.
Montreux – Mayer (GK); Bloch; Kung 2; Steffen 1 and Zeltner 1.

Herne Bay Junior Cup: Herne Bay United 4 v 3 Faversham Reserves (Played: Saturday 15 November 1924)

The first match of the evening was between Herne Bay United and Faversham Reserves in the semi-final of the Herne Bay Junior Cup. This ended in a win for the United by four goals to three, and they now qualify to meet Sittingbourne in the final.

Both sides attacked hotly in the first six minutes, and at the end of that time, Hudson obtained the first goal for the United. A period of end-to-end play followed, and both goalkeepers were brought into action. Rousell, in the visitors’ goal, saved many efforts; but he was well beaten by Hursell from a long range shot.

Faversham tried hard to score; but could not get past Griggs, who played splendidly at back.

In the second half the visitors were often in the picture; but their fine attempts proved of no avail for some time. After Hudson had obtained the third goal for the United, Cornford reduced the lead. A minute later he again beat Gentry; but Hudson gained possession immediately on the restart and added the fourth goal for Herne Bay United. As the game was drawing to a close Cornford again got through for Faversham, and thus completed the "hat trick".

The teams were:
Herne Bay United – Gentry (GK); Griggs; Chapman; W. Hudson 3 and Hursell 1.
Faversham Reserves – Rousell (GK); Dane; Pordage; Cornford 3 and Pepper.

Friendly match?: Herne Bay Victoria 8 v 3 Herne Bay United (Played: Saturday 25 October 1924)

The match between the Herne Bay Victoria team and Herne Bay United was naturally looked forward to with great interest. Although both sides scored twice in the first half, the Victoria team played superior hockey in the closing half, and won by eight goals to three.

Immediately on the start the United went on the offensive and Hursell sent in some well placed shots. All these were cleared by Hudson, while Gentry, in the other goal, similarly dealt with the efforts by Fox. Both goals were visited in turn; but the respective goalkeepers displayed exceptional skill and agility.

After Hursell had given the United the lead the Victoria pressed for some time, and Annond placed the teams on level terms. Shortly afterwards Fox added a second goal for his side; but before the interval Hursell again got through for the United. In the closing period further goals were scored for the Victoria by Fox (3) and Brown (3); while Hudson registered the third for the United.

The teams were:-
Herne Bay Victoria - H Hudson; Hoile; Annond; Fox and Brown.
Herne Bay United - Gentry; Griggs; Norris; W Hudson and Hursell.
The referee was Mr F East of Herne Bay
