Maltings Cup

Herne Bay United's under 13 team put up a spirited performance and finished fourth in the Maltings Cup competition at Farnham. They won two games convincingly. beating Bedales School 6 - 0 and Farnham Dynamoes 5 - 2.

The team's best result was a 4 - 4 draw against Southsea Imps, one of the strongest teams and tournament runners-up. But Herne Bay dropped two valuable points against Farnham Tigers in a close match, going down 6 - 4. With better team work United could have done better. Guernsey, the tournament winners, beat United 7 - 2.

Trevor Smith and Joel Hudson showed promise, despite their lack of years and size, and Graham Smith also displayed good potential. Veterans Paul Hughes and Mathew Barton, an experienced pair, gave United a boost, and Paul was the team's leading scorer. Danny Barton and Philip McVey used maximum effort, and Mark Botting was also useful.
