Under 13's British National Champions
Herne Bay United Minors swept aside all opposition to become minors' champions of Britain in a deciding tournament at Peterborough on Sunday. After an easy 16 - 0 win over Leicester, United met strong contenders from Farnhamm but had built a 10 - 0 lead by the final whistle. Their third game was crucial, against 1982/3 champions Grimsby, who were also unbeaten at that stage. After conceding an early goal, United settled down to play better hockey and fought back hard to win an exciting game 5 - 3. Their last match against Immingham was a struggle. United's youngsters' stamina was severaly tested but they raised their game sufficiently to secure a 4 - 0 victory.
So for the first time, the minors' championship of Great Britain, and the magnifient cup, have come to Herne Bay. The cup was presented to team captain Philip McVey, who also won an individual award as the most promising 11-year-old, by national coach Dave Brewer. United scored 35 goals and conceded only three, thanks to stout defending by Graeme Smith and Mark Botting, and goalkeeper Danny Barton. Goal scorers were: Joel Hudson (15), Philip McVey (14), Chris Gisby (5) and Dan Fathers.
Herne Bay United are now Britain's national schoolboys' champions (for 16-year-olds and under), and British minors' champions (for 13-year-olds and under) - the two most coveted titles in roller hockey at junior level.
